28th November – Reach Daily Challenges Commentary

Right, looks like there are a couple today that everyone’s questioning, so here goes…

Fire When Ready – Kill 50 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking – 1000 cR

Less than we’ve had the rest of the week, this should be a couple of games in multi team and you’re done.

Return of the Mack – Kill 75 Elites in Campaign today on Normal or harder – 2250 cR

ONI: Sword Base all the way. Just playing through there are 30-40 I think, and it’s definitely worth using the target designator at the beginning. Basically run from the start up the ramp to your right and take out the Elite at the top. Then hug the wall all the was to where the TD is, grab it, turn around and fire it back up to the top of the slope. Then take out the few guys around you and go back up the slope to mop up anyone who survived. You’ll get 4-5 Elites a time, but it takes about a minute and gives you loads of medals and kills, so well worth it. If you’re playing through, still stick to ONI Sword Base, especially from Rally Point Bravo inside the base itself.

Pod Kettle Black – Kill 10 Elite Drop Pods in The Long Night of Solace – 1000 cR

Right… when you play Long Night of Solace from Rally Point Alpha you’re in the space combat. After the first section defending the station, you take on a Covvie Corvette. That Corvette launches fighters at you. At the same time, it also launches 6 pods (2 groups of 3) from the bottom of the ship towards the planet. You can see them streak away. You can’t target them with missiles, and you have to be close to shoot them, but those are the Elite Drop Pods. It registers your kills after each wave have disappeared (entered Reach’s atmosphere). So go into that bit of the mission and fly beneath the corvette taking out all the pods you can and you’ll get it easy.

Heroic Demon – Kill 40 Elites in Firefight Matchmaking on Heroic or harder – 2000 cR

As always with this challenge, you have two options – Score Attack where there are about 6 Elites, or full Firefight Matchmaking, which will give you more, but takes longer. I recommend Rocketfight as it’s easier to take down Elites. 40’s a high number, but there are that many in a round, however split between 4 of you you might not do it, so be prepared to do it a couple of times. When they did this recently they changed the Bonus Round so it was Elites only – can someone let me know if it’s the same today please? If so, refer to my commentary from the game with BungiesGirl for a bit more info.

And there you have it. Let me know if you have any further tips on these challenges. It’s the last day to get the epic weekly challenge, so hopefully you can get through these and pick up mondo points.

Does anyone know if the Elite drop pod kills also counts towards the 75 elite kills in campaign?

    • Matthew Vose says:

No they don’t sadly. Nor do Banshee kills here or on the New Alexandria levels – ONI Sword Base really is the best way, I tried a number of others to see.

  2. Coalhouse says:

Bit of a grind today with the 125 elites over 3 game types and all, but definitely worth it for that 16k weekly bonus.

Thanks for the tips, I never would have figured out what those drop pods were (or where to find them)
