21st December – Reach Daily Challenges Commentary

10,000 credits today, although a heck of a load of grinding to get them. Make sure you’re aware of your proximity to the daily credit cap (I think it’s 60,000).

Shootin’ and Lootin’ – Kill 250 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 2500 cR

Given there’s another challenge for 1000 kills in Firefight, get these in that game mode so that you’re counting them towards the big reward and the weekly challenge.

Stronger, Harder – Complete a Campaign mission on Heroic with Famine, Tough Luck and Thunderstorm on – 2750 cR

As always you’re better off sticking with Winter Contingency, since it’s relatively easy to do. Search for the level name on my site and you’ll see I’ve discussed it in length previously. The key here will be making sure you visit the ammo stacks at the base (both when defending the door and starting inside the base). Pick up Plasma Pistols as they’re the most useful weapon on this level (Esp combined with DMR or Pistol) and be prepared to swap them often.

Fortified Court – Kill 1000 enemies on Courtyard in Firefight Matchmaking – 3500 cR

Bloomin’ ‘eck, 1000 enemies but with a good return. So this is 10 matches of Score Attack (assuming you get all 100 kills in each game), or 8 matches of Gruntpocalypse and then 1 of SA or Firefight proper. If you can get into Firefight Matchmaking (something like Rocketfight) as just yourself there are over 300 enemies available. That’s probably the fastest way of doing it, but you’re likely to be paired with people so it strips down the number of kills you can get. Personally, I’m thinking Gruntpocalypse is the way to go. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Go Right Ahead Folks – Earn a First Strike in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 1250 cR

I think Team SWAT is a good one to get this on, and Asylum, Countdown or Sword Base are good for picking it up. On Asylum, zoom your DMR through the central arena and watch for the opposite team coming down their ramp. Countdown you can look through the central area and see the opposite team there, and on Sword Base go to the top of the green lift if you’re red, as blues usually come up the lift first. If you’re blue the go to the ramp up from your starting point as you can often snipe someone who doesn’t expect it.

Good luck everyone, I’m off to see Tron 2 and finish my Christmas shopping.

Wow, that third one’s gonna take some effort. In fact I’d say it’s gonna take just as much as the weekly (which will no doubt also be completed while doing it). Do you know if they’re likely to fix the matchmaking so Courtyard is the first option? That’d be handy, otherwise I foresee a lot of quitting going on. I reckon rocketfight is the way forward (and let’s face it, it’s a lot of fun), I tend to get anywhere between 80-140 kills, depending on how good the other players are, and each match is say 25mins. Mind you, with score attack/g.poc. at least you can ensure you’re on courtyard and there’s a guaranteed kill count. Gonna take a bit of trial and error me thinks. I’m finishing my xmas shopping too, so I may not get it done.

I’d say that the easiest way to get First Strike is through Living Dead. You get many more chances to get the first strike in a much shorter length of time.

    • Matthew Vose says:

That’s a good point, although not so easy to get First Strike unless you’re human, and good at getting pistol shots. You’re right that you get several chances for it though, which is a good way to try.

  3. Riley says:

LOL @ challenge #3, what’s the point of the weekly then? I strive to get every challenge, every day but I really don’t feel like playing 3 hours of firefight PLUS the time it will take to get everything else!

  4. Alex says:

Why did they make a daily challenge more time consuming than the weekly challenge?

    • Matthew Vose says:

I definitely think they’re trying to keep people playing it, I’m as surprised as anyone that the weekly is a) easy and b) not a huge number of credits.

  5. Howie says:

@Alex: They probably have all the challenges set in their database and each day, a program randomly selects them.

    • Matthew Vose says:

I don’t think we’re quite there yet. There are still brand new challenges coming up, and some targetted at specific days and supposed to be keeping the Reach audience there. I reckon at some point either the challenge system will be scrapped or they’ll set up something that automates it. But that won’t be until at least September if not sometime 2012 (my opinion).
