4th January – Reach Daily Challenges Commentary

I got my Game Boy Advance SP today, hurrah. Having never owned a portable console it’s pretty exciting. What games from the Game Boy series are a must play?

Anyway, that’s not why you’re here. Today we have some easy challenges, but they are a bit of a grind I’m afraid. Still, it’s worth it to get further with the weekly…

Gunslinger – Kill 100 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking – 1000 cR

Multi-Team battle is the place to go for lots of kills, as long as you avoid the Rocket Race variant. Crazy King and Oddball help get a high number of kills if you aren’t interested in the objective.

A Great Friend – Earn 15 assists today in multiplayer Matchmaking – 2000 cR

An assist is when you do 40% or more damage to an opponent and someone else kills them within 4 seconds. There are various ways to do this, one of the best is to team up with someone and work on taking people out together, again particularly in the Multi-Team Battle variants. An overcharged Plasma Pistol or Sniper Rifle shot to the body do more than 40% damage straight off, so you can always snipe from a camping position (ie the loft on Pinnacle) to help take people down. Apparently Rumble Pit is also excellent for getting assists.

The Little Guys – Kill 200 Grunts in Campaign today on Normal or harder – 2000 cR

You’ll remember I discussed this on 17th November when we last saw it. My thoughts then are the same now, Winter Contingency, Exodus or The Package are excellent for Grunts – read through the post from the 17th for more information on them. I’d also recommend going for the next two challenges before this, as you’ll be killing Grunts whilst attempting them I bet. Gerry also suggested the opening of ONI Sword Base – go straight to the Target Designator, turn around and blast some Grunts, then reset to checkpoint. It’s a quick way of doing it, although I prefer playing through levels to up various commendations. Ryan suggested something similar on The Package, throwing a grenade just before the checkpoint so that every time you reset it goes off and takes out a few Grunts. Let me know if you have any other great suggestions.

Heroic Demon – Kill 30 Elites in Firefight Matchmaking on Heroic or harder – 1500 cR

Any Rocketfight Matchmaking will suit you here (you only get about 6 Elites in Score Attack so that’ll take about an hour if you do it that way). Courtyard can be useful as it doesn’t take too long to get out and take people on. I quite like Overlook as it’s a fairly easy map to do hit and run attacks once the enemies get tough. The last few times we’ve seen this the number of Elites has been upped in the Firefights, particularly the bonus round.

Remember to post any tricks you know of for these challenges in the comments. Check back daily for commentary on how to achieve the challenges as quickly as possible. GBA SP Games I would say are must play – Advance Wars 1 or 2, fire emblem, zelda a link to the past, pokemon fire red or leaf green and mario kart. There are loads of other RPG’s i’d recommend but those games are the main ones i used to play.

  2. Joe Mauler says:

Final Fantasy 1&2, 4, 5, and 6 all on the GBA, Golden Sun & Golden Sun: The Lost Age, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Metroid: Zero Mission & Metroid Fusion, other Pokemon games Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald, Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis (Lucky if you can find that), oh yeah forgot Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, those are some of my favorites that Jonny did not mention

    • Jonny says:

Oh man I can’t believe i forgot FFTA good call mate, funnily enough all the rpg’s you mentioned are the ones i didn’t bother mentioning.

  3. Lake Balls says:

rumble pit all the way for assists – make sure you go for oddball/crazy king. if your level is the cage i like to go on top of the central building with a DMR and 2 of each grenade then pepper wherever people are congregating! plasma pistol is also your friend.

  4. Spiderbaby says:

For the little guys, I started on The Package, Rally Point Bravo and followed I3utteRzZ’s Onyx-MAX Campaign Commendation Guide to the checkpoint as follows:

“…run down across the bridge, past the rocks, and down to your right (towards the next bridge). A phantom is going to land across that bridge and drop off 8 grunts. Stand around, close enough to the grunts/phantom to not trigger the checkpoint. When all the grunts are running towards you, run back up the hill towards the lab doors you’re supposed to be protecting. The checkpoint will trigger as soon as you’re too far away for the grunts to shoot at you. You should be backing up with your reticle already aimed at the first one’s head. When the checkpoint triggers, there you are, aimed and ready…”

Then I blew up the little guys with grenades to help that commendation and reloaded the checkpoint. Cute sticky goo flying everywhere. Sad little methane packs trailing through the air. Dying grunts taking their last gasp of teabag. Netting 3-8 grenade kills per reload and mopping the rest up with the DMR has you done in less than five minutes but just make sure to take some damage so that a new checkpoint doesn’t hit after you kill the eight grunt.

Sure it’s grindy but it’s handy when you’ve limited gaming time.

  5. Russ says:

I ran this co-op with my brother, it’s surprising how long it takes to get all those damn grunts !

We did Exodus (many times !) – when you’re in the Falcons there’s about another 6-10 grunts running around with the Brutes.
