26th January – Reach Daily Challenges Commentary

A bit of a grind today, but two more challenges I don’t think we’ve seen before…

Heroic Demon – Kill 50 Elites in Firefight Matchmaking on Heroic or harder – 2500 cR

Any Rocketfight Matchmaking will suit you here (you only get about 6 Elites in Score Attack so that’ll take about an hour if you do it that way). Courtyard can be useful as it doesn’t take too long to get out and take people on. I quite like Overlook as it’s a fairly easy map to do hit and run attacks once the enemies get tough. The last few times we’ve seen this the number of Elites has been upped in the Firefights, particularly the bonus round.

That Pink Mist – Kill 100 enemies with a Supercombine from the Needler or Needle Rifle in Firefight Matchmaking – 1400 cR

I’m a Score Attack fan for this. You can grab a Needler from the Grunts and use it on them. In the second wave you can get a Needle Rifle from a Jackal. To get the supercombine you need to hit an unshielded enemy with about half a Needler clip, or three from the Rifle. The third wave of Brutes is excellent for this as they’re big targets and don’t dodge so much as they get close. For today I’d work through Score Attack and see how you do, if it’s not a decent amount (20+) in a match perhaps try a Firefight proper and keep ploughing through to get the kill volume.

Killing Frenzy – Earn a Killing Frenzy in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 1000 cR

The Frenzy is 10 kills without dying. Not necessarily in a short space of time. This will come down a lot to personal preference. Immediately I think Grifball, Juggernaut in Rumble Pit or Team SWAT for me. Grifball might be best although it’s so easy to be killed or betrayed you’re likely to get annoyed, however if you can get your timing in and get to the spawn points to take the opposition out as they spawn – annoying I know as the person spawning but admit it – you would if you were in that position! 🙂

Came From Behind – Perform 3 Assassinations in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 1500 cR

Hooray for Star Wars references. I’ll try updating the Challenge Names 101 post with this and a couple of other recent ones soon. 3 assassinations in one game can be tricky. If you’re lucky you’ll find someone who’s AFK and you can hunt them down during the match. Again, it’s annoying but knowing spawn points can help you – the rocks in Asylum for instance, or favourite camping positions like the lofts in Cage and Pinnacle or the lift in Reflection. Another good tactic is Sniper and DMR game types, since people can’t see their motion trackers when zoomed in you might be able to sneak up on them. Don’t forget that reloading and sprinting make noise so people know you’re there. Anyone who has watched the Halo Reach Mythbusters series will know that assassinating someone on a moving platform, and sometimes on unusual terrain, does not trigger the animation but counts, so that could be useful (I know I’ve been assassinated on the ramp on Pinnacle but the animation didn’t play).

Feed back your tips for these, and how easy or difficult you found them in the comments section below.

100 supercombine kills?!?! What the heck, do they think people want to grind for a couple of hours for such a low credit return?

    • Matthew Vose says:

Honestly Chris I don’t think Bungie have ever figured out how to pitch this challenge. First time the published it the target was 70 for 1000, since then we’ve also had:

      20 for 1650
      40 for 2000
      100 for 1400

So it varies wildly. Part of me wonders if I’ve missed a trick that the challenge is much easier than it sounds in my head – I’m hoping if I have someone will suggest something. The fluctuation in target and credits implies that either they’re still experimenting with the challenge or that they introduce it at certain times for different reasons, like getting people to use those weapons more if they’re being neglected, or get the achievement if only a small percentage have got it.

  2. Tim Everitt says:

Killing Frenzy should be fun to get, if many in Team Swat are going for the challenge. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve probably played in Sword Base Swat more than any other map. My favorite assassination spot: If you’re team blue, after the initial spawn, jump the wall and head to the right, or team red, head towards the bridge and jump off to the far corner. Take the lift up to the platform above where the shotgun and plasma grenades spawn (under the stairs). You can usually find a couple of them trying to camp while others battle it out in the lift/room/stairs on the other side.

For the Supercombine challenge, I’ve found Sniperfight > Firefight matchmaking the quickest. With unlimited ammo, you grab a Needler from an early Grunt and mow them down. Hang onto it as long as you can, paying attention to death spots and where you respawn to pick it back up before it disappears.

Might take a couple of matches, you can also pick off some Elites and rack up some cR.

    • Matthew Vose says:

That’s a good shout – as you say it’s important to keep the Needler, but with infinite ammo you can waste a clip per kill and still wrack them up. Good maps? I’m thinking Overlook, the whole left area is much harder for Covvie dudes to jump behind something so you can spray them with needles.

I’d say maybe courtyard but you could die alot there.
Perhaps the pillar of autumn map?
I forget what it’s called it’s either outpost or holdout

      • Matthew Vose says:

I thought about courtyard but there’s so many hiding places they’ll just keep ducking behind things. Holdout could be good, but again a bit of the same problem. The thing that makes it tricky is the Tough Luck skull being on.

      • dukemeiser says:

Snipers on Corvette is ideal. The ramps act as funnels. Just stay at the top an unload as they try coming up. They wont dodge if the space wont allow them

  3. LordLiam316 says:

I’m going to just leave the firefight challenges personally. Not really worth it but I might try for the elite one if I get bored of matchmaking.
Are the firefight grab bag ones still available? The fist fight and stuff like that? If so I think I’ll try to get frg fight.

But 1000 cR for 100 enemies with Needler!? Get out of town bungie. Not really I love you guys but I just wish you could work out a decent ratio of hardness to cR reward.

Love the posts keep it up 🙂

    • LordLiam316 says:

Also I have watched the halo reach mythbusters ep where they test that.
It’s a handy thing to know

  4. Leoklank says:

Damn kill frenzy. I already got the other 3 and by the way, Rumble Pit Slayer on Asylum was perfect for the Assasination challenge. Just use the Dash or the Active Cammo and Camp for a while. I got 5 Assasinations barely trying.

  5. Leoklank says:

And by the way, the 100 needler supercombine kills took me 3 firefights to complete. Each time with 3 other idiots who were going for the same challenge. It’s not that hard and I even think that if you supercombine a grunt and that explosion kills the guys around him, it’ll count towards your total. I also got the elite challenge at the same time. They die quickly with the needler (unlimited ammo).

  6. DiverDallas says:

I know pink mist challeng is pretty in proportional but it honestly depends where your “Riften Through” commendation is at. If it is lower than silver, you’ll be getting 2 credits per kill with the needler at the minimum. I was getting 10 credits per kill b/c mine’s only at iron. When I do get the comemendation it’ll be totaled up to 2250 b/c you won’t get the explosion every time

  7. Bob says:

I’m a bit pressed for time today (And quite frankly, tired of spending hours doing challenges :P) So does anyone want to get online with me and we could help each other get the two Matchmaking clahhenges?

  8. Shane says:

For “Came From Behind”, I’ll try to play multiteam on Zealot with the camouflage loadout. It’s a great combination for assassinations as it’s a small map and you can usually stay in the balconies and get the drop easily. This is easier to do in KOTH or Oddball since half the players are usually focused on the objective.

Otherwise, you be be That Guy camping the lifts on Reflection with camouflage on multiteam. Bad for karma, good for completing challenges.

  9. Alpinestars CTR says:

For the three assasinations I just entered rumble pit with three guests which were unplayed controllers then killed them for the three assasinations and killing frenzy, yea maybe cheating a little but does the job! Easy points and saving time for the firefight ones to be done.

    • Shane says:

Eh, I would be careful there. Bungie could reset you for party boosting.

Bringing guests in who *all play at once* for boosting is frowned upon but I think it’s tolerated since it’s still playing the game (kind of). I think party boosting with idle players is bannable however. You should check the Bungie forums for official posts.

      • Alpinestars CTR says:

Ye I am aware of that but it was only one game, can be forgiven I hope! Lol thanks for the concern though! Anyway, my mates are no better at playing than the empty controllers to be honest ha ha.
