12th February – Reach Daily Challenges Commentary

So many credits today, and it’s actually not that hard to get them either…

It was the Winter… – Complete Winter Contingency on Legendary without dying – 5000 cR

We’ve had this for a couple of other levels. It’s not particularly hard on Winter Contingency, for the most part you can run the map and stay in the jeep to run things over and let Noble team do a lot of the work. What makes it hard is the base section. I always say take out the Elite with the Concussion Rifle at the beginning, so keep peppering him with shots and take him down. Use DMR and grenades on the Jackals and Grunts, then when you get to the last section use a Plasma Pistol overcharge on the Sword Elite and headshot him with the DMR. If you get really stuck, there is a glitch which can be exploited, by exiting the game and restarting from last checkpoint it opens up the challenge again, and you can continue from where you died.

Home Field Advantage – Win 7 games in multiplayer Matchmaking – 2500 cR

Stick to Team Slayer/SWAT/Snipers/Objective/Grifball/ for this. In those there are only two teams so your chances of winning are greatly improved. If you find a group of guys you play well with then stick with them.

This is My Rifle… – Earn 100 kills with precision weapons in multiplayer Matchmaking – 1500 cR

Precision weapons are the DMR, Sniper Rifle, Focus Beam and Needle Rifle (anything that gives a headshot except the Pistol, which is a Small Arms weapon). Team SWAT will do you well here. Unless you melee every kill will be a precision weapon kill, so play it a few times, try and get a good team who will cover your back (and you theirs). See my weekly challenge commentary (link to the right) for more info on Precision weapon kills.

Cook ’em, Clean ’em! – Kill 20 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking while you’re jet-packing – 2400 cR

Remember you have to be actively firing the jet-pack when the person dies to register it, otherwise you’re just falling with style. Normal multiplayer games (Rumble Pit, Team and Multi Team) and just firing short bursts when you’re about to kill someone – particularly with grenades or heavy weapons. 20′s a fairly high number but at least it’s not in one game. Some useful places – grenades in Pinnacle when people are in the main loft area, Boardwalk again in the central sniper point. The Hammer and Sword work well with this, just use the equipment and fire buttons at the same time.

And there you have it. I can’t remember if we’ve ever had so many credits available in one day. Be careful if you get all these and the weekly you might approach the credit limit.

If you weren’t aware, today’s the start of the Rugby League season in England. All 14 teams are playing in Cardiff today, it should be a brilliant day. My team Wigan have the headline match tonight against our biggest rivals St Helens, who we beat in the final in October. If you see the scores either think of me celebrating or drowning my sorrows!

I always love a challenge that consists of Winter Contingency, considering i know the level better than i know myself. Now the jetpack challenge i will probally have some problems with! 😦

    • Darth Malber says:

I’m not a fan of the jetpack challenges either because it’s my least favorite armor loadout. However I was able to complete it in three games on rumble pit. I wouldn’t have guessed it, but shotgun was particularly useful in cliffhanger at close quarters with a short burst of jet.

  3. Zen says:

In terms of the exploit, do I “save and exit” and then just enter the game again?

    • michael says:

Thats what i did. I died like twice then when i got to the checkpoint where you enter the room with the sword elite and jorge says i got you covered, just save and exit. then at the main menu select resume solo campaign. Just dont die any after you resume the game and if you can make it past the sword elite and the few grunts, the challenge is yours. its exactally what i did.

  4. Austin says:

Ugh…a jetpacking challenge means that everyone will be flying around like gnats all day. If you’re normally a bumper jumper like me and aren’t used to flying the jetpack, you can negate their advantage by playing an enclosed map like Countdown or Sword Base and sticking to the corridors. And pick up a Needler as a secondary weapon for an easy kill against a jetpacker whose attention is elsewhere.

Firstly great news return of RL, proper sport back again !!!!!.

A simple question for all , is there a simple way to avoid matches were our friends from the USA are involved.Or is the only way to keep quitting games when the lag gives them all the advantages? , I’ve already muted all so I don’t have to listen to their inane drivel or rap music played constantly but its kinda making the game unplayable for me – some of you may agree !!!

    • ahem. i agree with everything…except the fact that it’s limited to Americans.

i kind of take offense to that, actually. i realize you don’t necessarily mean all but that is a gross categorization of us.

i mean, i could just as easily say that all the Brits i meet online are egotistic, cocky bastards but i don’t. because i know that’s not true.

      • michael says:

        I completely agree.

      • Matthew Vose says:

Play nicely guys or I’m turning off comments and making you both stand against the wall. *frowny face*

I can kind of understand, I don’t often play with my headset in, because a lot of people online are idiots.

I have heard of the lag being used as a cheat, I’ve not investigated if it’s an actual thing you install or just a way of setting up the router/connection, but yeah I’ve heard people doing it. Best thing is to not get stressed (not easy I know), mark them as players to be avoided after the match and restart matchmaking so you find new people to play with.

      • Chris says:

“Play nicely guys or I’m turning off comments and making you both stand against the wall. *frowny face*”

What happened to freedom of speech , is this Egypt or something , typical pie eater !!!! 🙂

      • Chris says:

“Brits i meet online are egotistic, cocky bastards but i don’t. because i know that’s not true. ”

it may well be true and the English are maybe the worst , why take offence too something that doesn’t apply to you ?? and why assume I’m British and assume I’d take offence to anything said about a country , even if I happened to be born/live in said country , its a rhetorical question just curious about peoples strange allegiance to country boundaries who’s only purpose is to enslave them .

        Viva the revolution ……

    • michael says:

I live in the U.S. and trust me, i have lag like crazy sometimes and no, i dont play rap music or talk ridiculously online. lol! The other day i was talking to one of my friends about how in some games online i have HORRIBLE lag. He told me that some people have a “lag switch” that they flip on when they are about to be killed so it will lag for everyone else but them, so they have a great advantage. If there really is something out there that does this then i dont want any part of it. To me, having something like that is one of the worst ways of cheating. Has anyone else ever heard of something like this?

      • Chris says:

If every one has the same lag its ok , slow motion , but ok . If there was an option to select Europe , Asia ,USA etc instead of language things would be ok.
Had a few time when players have disappeared in front of my eyes , wondered if its was the LAG switch cheat , if you have to cheat at a computer game its time to give up ..

    • Mike says:

Yeah I find Brits to be just as annoying or even more so! You ALWAYS have to correct us when we make a general statement, and don’t seem to understand that people tend to be sarcastic. It gets annoying when u go off on some tangent cause someone said something sarcastically. O and when someone is angry on the team it isn’t ur job to tell them off! Just shut the F up and kill someone!!!!!

  6. sorry, i should have kept my trap shut. i’ll do better. 🙂

anyways, yeah, there are definitely lag switches. apparently they aren’t hard to make either but i have no idea. never cared enough to look it up. i don’t get the people who cheat anyways, it’s no fun then.

  7. michael says:

I know what you mean. The point of playing, or to me anyways is for it to be challenging and to have fun. I mean if you cheat to win all the time it kinda takes both of those away. Oh well, i guess i will do what you said to Matthew and avoid the players i play with that i have lag in. It mainly does this when im in firefight matchmaking for some reason. Just every now and then it does it in a multiplayer game. Alot of my problem i think is with my connection. I have my connection wired in but others in the house have 3 other computers running off the same modem/router.

    • i don’t know that it’s JUST your connection affecting it. multiplayer firefight ALWAYS lags like mad for me, stateside or no. so, i just don’t play it and forgo any challenges that involve that (like flat tire.)

    • Chris says:

You could try giving priority on your router to the xbox mac address and put the xbox ip in the DMZ and upgrade your internet to 30mB/1mB and hard wire 100mBit network and and and and !!! you see I’ve tried a few things , but it doesn’t make up for living near to the server .
Also I set the screen resolution to a lower value , as I was getting lag in the Campaign mode when the action heated up !!!! so much for setting the game to the monitor native resolution.

regards to all my American friends , God Bless America , but watch out for their friendly fire in real life as well as a game 🙂

      • seriously? this is playing nice? come on.

      • Matthew Vose says:

Interesting idea on the screen res Chris, might have a play see if latency could be an issue too.

I’m hoping you took my comment in the spirit it was meant (as a joke, hence frowny face (side note – is there a smiley for frowning??)), and your comments are also in jest.

And no this isn’t Egypt, it’s my blog, a place for discussing and sharing ideas on the challenges. 😀

      • Chris says:

Yep no offence meant or taken , oh yes the challenges ok

This weeks challenge for 10million credit is to play a complete multi game with no lag,no quitters,no rap music,no running commentary (american accent optional),no betrayals,no hiding to just get the game complete bonus etc etc etc …. you get the idea

Good luck Wigan , hope its a good injury free game . enjoy

      • Chris says:

        “Halo Reach is still not a full 720p image, as the resolution is 1152 x 720 pixels — true 720 is 1280 x 720”

I used the screen res closest available to 1152 x 720 , on a monitor not TV , for best results on campaign/score attack .
Interested to know anyone else’s experience on improving the games performance .

  8. Coolguy says:

Can the campaign challenge be done co-op? Or has to be solo?

    • i would assume co-op is fine, all the other campaign challenges can be done that way. i haven’t tried yet, i usually wait for my friends to do the campaign ones. 🙂

      • Pedle Zelnip says:

One wonders though: if you do co-op and your *buddy* dies, does that negate the challenge? If not, it’d make the challenge pretty damn easy.

      • i would guess it would negate the challenge for your buddy, not you?

        now i’m curious. 🙂

      • Pedle Zelnip says:

I was curious too, but not curious enough to play WC yet another time. 😉

  9. Edward says:

Question for Austin: I also use bumper-jumper, so jetpacking and aiming is a pain. Will you let this challenge pass you by, or do you have any pointers on how to handle it?

    • Austin says:

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, it’s absolutely impossible to complete the jetpacking challenges with bumper jumper controls — so I switch back to default controls temporarily to do them. Then I spend several rounds cursing the mixed up jump, equipment, reload, and grenade swap buttons. ;]

There should really be controller button layouts that ONLY swap the jump and equipment buttons…

  10. hey matthew, just for curiosity’s sake, would you consider making a poll to see which button layout people use?

  11. rippy says:

I just did “It was the Winter…” with a second controller, purposefully made player 2 die in the last room, and still got the credits on player 1 (even got the avatar award for not dying). Just make sure you move your own guy out of the way when it loads into a new area from player 2’s movements.

  12. Pedle Zelnip says:

“…when you get to the last section use a Plasma Pistol overcharge on the Sword Elite and headshot him with the DMR.”

I’m kinda curious, where do you get the DMR for there, as right after the cutscene after Kat closes the doors your weapons are reset, and I don’t know of any DMR between there and the sword elite.

    • when Jorge is taking out the grunts and stuff in the hallway, right after you go through the door, there’s a weapons station to the right. it’s kind of in the dark.

    • Matthew Vose says:

As soon as you start that section after the (awesome) cutscene there’s a weapon station right by you (can’t remember if it’s in front or to the right). I always camp there to take out the Concussion Elite so that I can get more ammo really quickly.

  13. Darth Malber says:

Anyone else notice that with the complete x games challenges you don’t actually get rewarded the credits because the challenge complete is awarded after the credit calculation screen?

  14. Kevin says:

there’s a credit limit? this is the first i’ve heard of it. can you explain …

  15. Defender77 says:

This was a fun and easy day for credits! Made General finally too. Only need 150 more kills for the weekly and I got most of those today.
