14th February – Reach Daily Challenges Commentary – Valentine Edition

Very valentine’s themed challenges today, all about love and peace throughout the game. Or in fact they’re more about shooting and hitting enemies, which is much more of a Halo theme…

Shootin’ and Lootin’ – Kill 250 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 2500 cR

Once you’ve played through the rest you’ll probably be half way to getting this total. I say play the multiplayer ones first, then see how many you have left. It might be worth jumping into a Score Attack/Gruntpocalypse type game, or indeed full Firefight to get not only the next challenge, but up your weekly waves volume and get this one.

That Pink Mist – Kill 70 enemies with a Supercombine from the Needler or Needle Rifle in Firefight Matchmaking – 1000 cR

*Update* I’m going to add this now from the comments we’ve had already – the new FRG mode in Score Attack has a loadout that has a Needler and infinite ammo attached. I’ve not done it yet so can’t corroborate, but I trust my lovely readers and commenters so that’s an awesome way to get this challenge. Plus with infinite ammo you can unload a clip into each dude to ensure you get the Supercombine, and you don’t run the risk of Unicorning someone with the Needle Rifle.

Your two best options here are Score Attack or Sniperfight. In Score Attack you can grab a Needler from the Grunts and use it on them. In the second wave you can get a Needle Rifle from a Jackal. To get the supercombine you need to hit an unshielded enemy with about half a Needler clip, or three from the Rifle. The third wave of Brutes is excellent for this as they’re big targets and don’t dodge so much as they get close. For today I’d work through Gruntpoc for the challenge above, then if you need to jump into a Score Attack to finish it off, and keep ploughing through to get the kill volumes too. In Sniperfight you get unlimited ammo, so grab either weapon ASAP and keep plugging away with it. This is across any number of games so it’ll be easy to pick up.

You Want This, Don’t You? – Earn 12 kills with precision weapons in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 1500 cR

This is easy in Team SWAT. Precision weapons are the DMR, Sniper Rifle, Needle Rifle and Focus Rifle (anything that gives a headshot bar the Pistol). So in SWAT you can easily kit up the DMR and just play the game as normal. 12 should be attainable for everyone playing it in one or two games.

Vengeance Found – Earn your ‘Revenge’ in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 1150 cR

Revenge is when you kill the guy who killed you. Chances are you’ll pick this up naturally, especially if a camper kills you and doesn’t move. That said, there are some maps that seem to make it easier, particularly ones where you can get back to someone really quickly. Team SWAT on Asylum’s good because you can snipe the guy who took you out from afar. I like Countdown because the high platform by the jets and ramps is always a killing zone that’s easy to get to and you’ll often find your killer there. Infection might be good if you’re the zombie and you get shot by a human and can then take them out. Grifball’s also excellent as it becomes a big melee you can get back to your killer quickly, especially those who stay near your spawn zone. Shame you can’t get revenge on Betrayals though.

Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone today, I hope you have someone you can say this to, whether it’s a partner, friend, family member or, as in my case, minions who have to be nice about it.

As usual on a Monday please use the options on the right to join our Facebook group (and post good screenshots if you do), follow me on Twitter or subscribe to the blog, so you get updates when I post my commentaries. Also please comment if you have your own tips for how to achieve today’s challenges.

I’m also running a poll this week on controller configurations, if you’ve not already voted please let us know what you use below, and again comment if you have a particular feeling why you like your setup…

One of the new modes (I think it’s FRG attack) starts you with a needler as a secondary weapon, with infinite ammo…

  2. thanks for setting up the poll! it’s really interesting to see what people like. and i was right, i’m pretty much in the minority. 😀 i know people like recon because it’s most like the halo 3 default. since i didn’t like that, recon’s out.

i use greenthumb but do not like it as much as the halo 3 version. i was always having issues finding the melee button when it mattered and i find that having it right under my thumb makes that easier. of course, i do sometimes melee at absolutely the worst times but for the most part, it serves me well.

i really wish they would allow a custom setup for the controls, that’d be even better. i never thought to try bumper jumper though, i’ll have to give it a go and see what happens…

    • Matthew Vose says:

I reckon there’s a reason we’re not allowed to customise controls, perhaps something about performance or maintaining a level playing field. I hate bumper jumper for when you see guys hopping across a map. I played Halo 3 but barely any MPMM so Reach has been my first big foray in the games online since Halo 2.

    • This is the first Halo game I’ve played and I LOVE the default setting. I’d been much more of a PC FPS fan until we got a 360 a couple months ago and I actually wish I could change the controls on every FPS to the Reach default (Tactical in CoD is pretty close though).

I’ll have to think about why, can’t quite remember the differences at the moment.

  3. oh and happy valentine’s day to you too!

  4. Zen says:

I was going to say the same as Braythor. FRGfight is ideal for the supercombine challenge if you want to use the needler, because it is your secondary weapon by default.

  5. f1c2 says:

I find I accidentally pushed the button on the right stick too often. I like the default configuration, it is inconvenient to scope in on somebody when they get close up and personal. Thus, I also use green thumb. And I would also like to wish everybody a happy valentines day.

    • Hmm, that’s a good point. I’m going to check that out. Always nice to be fighting a brute and then suddenly find yourself staring DIRECTLY INTO HIS PUPIL muahahaha

    • MJOLNIR Tester says:

Enable “anticlench” on your controller menu and it reduces accidental scoping.

  6. SwiftEagleEye says:

I actually like number jumper but I didn’t switch to it until reach. I always use it unless there is a challenge for jet back and then I go default for a bit. What speed does everyone set there sensitivity too? I keep mine on 7

    • Default for me. I bump it up a notch on most other games though.

    • i think mine’s one or two above default. i tried higher and my screen would fly past what i was trying to look at. oops. that coupled with accidentally scoping in to check out someone’s armor = lots of dying. oops!

  8. michael says:

Im glad its firefight for the most part today. I use the default layout and my sensitivity is set to 2. That way its easier for me to pull off that headshot. Also i was going to ask if anyone has the newer xbox 360 slim and if anyone that does have it if you also bought the fan that the xbox sits down in to keep it cooler. I bought the 4gb 360 yesterday and got the 250gb hard drive for it, since NO ONE within 100 miles had a 250gb without kinect. Mine seems to get pretty hot after about an hour or so and was wondering if i needed to purchase the fan for it. My other xbox is the older model pro 60gb console and i had the fan that went on the back of it at the power supply. I left that xbox on about 15 hours a day and never had any problems out of it, except for it not wanting to read some discs every now and then. Oh and happy valentines day to everyone!

  9. Eric says:

Another option for the pink mist challenge is Crashsite (which unfortunately doesn’t come up often). It’s the single player edition of generator defense, and while you don’t start with a needler, you can swap for one and it will have infinite ammo. FRG is probably just as good though.

  10. michael says:

Wait a second guys… i just did FRG Attack and killed lots of enemies with a supercombined explosion and it didnt give me anything on the challenge. The challenge is highlighted like i can get it on frg attack when i look at my challenges while im in game, but its not crediting the supercombined kills to it when i get them. Whats going on? Is it just me?

    • michael says:

Ok, nevermind. When i killed grunts with the supercombined explosion it didnt give it to me, but when the brutes came out and i did it, it gave me the credit for the challenge. I mean i know the difference between a “kill” with the needler and a “supercombined explosion” with the needler, i was just wondering if this happened to anyone else?

      • Eric says:

It happens with grunts (and other weak enemies) because the initial needles kill them before the supercombine explosion actually happens. Essentially you’re super-combining a corpse. That makes the challenge a little bit annoying – the only enemies that this consistently works on are brutes and elites.

      • dukemeiser says:

Only virgin grunts (ones without ANY damage) can be supercombined in the first round. If their buddy blew up beside them that could be enough damage to kill them before they supercombine. Once the Mythic skull gets turned on in round two you should be able to supercombine all of them.

  11. Matt says:

Nice call on FRG Fight! I’ll add in the following things I learned: pick a level where you can wipe out the grunts and jackals quickly with the FRG, since it’s hard (impossible?) to get the supercombine on them. Also, I found the drop shield to be the most useful armor ability, allowing you to recharge your shields safely.

    • michael says:

Ok…glad to see im not the only one here. lol! It looked to me like an explosion but i guess i was wrong. 😦

  12. Shane says:

I picked up most of the Pink Mist kills in a fistfight match (not my choice). Out of 135 needler kills, I got maybe 45 supercombines but the three of us cleared the level quickly with three perfect rounds so no complaints here.

I’m loving Firefight arcade since it’s making the (previously really annoying) automatic weapon commendation actually possible to get while still having fun.

  13. Edward says:

I had the same problem on 2x Score Attack, and sometimes with the Needle Rifle too. I guess the weapons are more powerful in that mode: most Jackals are now one shot kills, even when they have their shields in front of them.
