12th April – Reach Daily Challenges Commentary

What are the chances we’re going to get some random and/or difficult daily challenges this week after the very easy Weekly Challenge? Looking at the below today it’s quite possible…

Shootin’ and Lootin’ – Kill 400 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 2000 cR

You’ve got a few choices for doing this really easily and quickly…

  • Forge – make a game with players spawning in one spot and camp it
  • Firefight – Download my Firefight Invincible game type on my File Share, lots of Elites, lots of medals, lots of kills
  • ONI: Sword Base – Use the Target Designator trick (run past everyone at the beginning, grab it, turn around, fire, wait for the killing to stop and restart the checkpoint)
  • Package – There are points where you can get a checkpoint just before a number of Grunts appear in the final battle, so you can gun them down and restart

Flat Tire – Kill 10 enemy vehicles in Firefight Matchmaking – 1125 cR

Holdout is a good option for this because you’re guaranteed a Banshee each game, and if you take it out quick (Sniper Rifle in the crow’s nest) then you can get several. Beachhead and Outpost do have some vehicles dropped, 2X Score Attack has been reported to do well here, although sometimes there are none sometimes there are 4 or 5.

Golden Opportunity – Find and kill the Gold Ranger-class Elite in any Campaign mission on Heroic or harder – 2500 cR

We’ve already had lots of discussion on one particular Gold Ranger in New Alexandria (I almost had him when doing the weekly last night), but did you know there’s one in each level? Well the one in Exodus hasn’t been found last thing I heard. The one I know with certainty is in Winter Contingency (hands up if you didn’t think that was coming). If you get through the level fairly quickly (clearing out the first two groups of Grunts and Skirmishers), then run past the three Elites and start driving your way to the Marine defence section, you’ll pass a gold coloured Elite running. He’ll stop and fight you when you catch him, so jump out of the jeep and take that guy down. If you want to find them on other levels, follow this excellent guide.

Neuroscience – Kill 10 enemies with headshots in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 1200 cR

Play on Team SWAT for this, where about 97% of kills should be headshots with one shot. Don’t forget if you shoot someone in the body you can still shoot them in the head for the headshot. Keep your reticule at head height as well.

As ever if you have your own tips feel free to add them into the comments.

Shootin’ and Lootin’ and Flat Tire can both be done in 3 or 4 games on Holdout. It’s best going into Score Attack just so you have more veto’s to use in the hope that Holdout comes up; even then you want to pick either 2x Score Attack, FRGfight, Rocketfight or Sniperfight. Make sure to take the Banshee out as soon as it turns up (keep your ears peeled), and there should be another one 3 or 4 minutes later. Also if you can convince a Grunt to get on the turret in the middle of the map, and then take out the turret itself (not the gunner), that counts as a vehicle kill too. If you drag the game out to the full length of time, you’ll probably get 3 or 4 Banshees per game.

Speaking of killing Banshees on Holdout, anyone know if you can just plasma pistol them so they drop off the side, and have that count as a kill? And can you jack one? That’d make Firefight a lot more fun! 😉

Pretty decent credits today for a fairly minimal amount of time. I’m even tempted by killing the gold ranger Elite, but it’ll mess up my perfectly placed campaign save that I’m currently using for a couple of easy commendations. Hmm.

    • michael says:

I have plasma pistoled the banshee on Holdout a few times and had it land right beside me. It never gives me the option to get in it and if you plasma pistol it 2 times in 2X Score Attack just to keep it down, it will blow up. It would be awesome if you could jack it. Holdout would be my favorite Firefight map then. lol.

      • Scruff UK says:

Heh 🙂 It’s a shame you can’t jack it… There needs to be a vehicle-based FF variant, really. There’s not enough vehicle combat in Reach generally compared to previous Halo games, but it’s particularly missing in FF. And those vehicle-based FF commendations are nigh-on impossible on the current game settings. I want to fly around raising hell in a Banshee!! 😉

    • Shane says:

Yep, Holdout definitely although I’d recommend Sniperfight Score Attack in particular and do like Matthew suggested. Fly up to the highest roof, let that grunt take the turret as you suggested and kill him. If you use rockets or the FRG then he usually jumps off in time and you miss the vehicle kill.

Like you say, that’s 4-5 vehicle kills a game counting the turret. I don’t think you can idle and wait for the banshees – I tried this once and I only got 1 or 2 in the game.

  2. Jonny says:

I have been trying to do Flat Tire, i’ve been doing solo score attack and i’ve done 2x score attack on Hold Out and killed 2 banshees, and 2x score attack on Beachhead and killed a Wraith and none of those kills have counted towards the challenge. I don’t have the time or inclination to play enough games of multiplayer Firefight to get 10 kills, at 1 or 2 vehicles per game max, battling everyone else to be first to kill them.

Usually I would get a few mates to do it with me, but who wants to do enough Firefight to make sure all 4 players get their 10 kills…

I don’t think i’ll bother with this challenge, yet again.

    • Scruff UK says:

Ugh, really? I hate it when they don’t count towards the challenge / commendation. If you really wanted, you could sign in with another controller, and join a game with someone else who also has another controller signed in – that way there’s just two of you going for the 10 kills, which isn’t so bad.

But then, it’s only 1125 credits. You’d make more than that in one game of Team Slayer…

      • Jonny says:

Indeed, I get that in one game of Swat, so it’s time better invested elsewhere. As you say Scruff, there just isn’t enough vehicular combat in Reach. ODST had plenty to kill on Lost Platoon, you could probably get the challenge in one game of 15 waves.

    • Sergeant Jinto says:

This is really bothering me too. Even killing ONE Banshee on Holdout didn’t register as a kill in my last match. =\

    • Chris says:

You are using the turret to shoot down the banshees ?

In FRG/2x you tend to kill the occupant before the vehicle so it don’t count for the challenge.

Got one banshee on holdout and a wraith on sniper glacier both Score attack …. me done for today so 2 from 10 not good .

Did get that Gold geezer on Winter so not all bad ….

      regards

    • Chris Atreides says:

I concur, this challenge is a joke. But on a side note thanks for the beta yesterday on the weekly challenge that was muy facil. Viva Reach!!!

    • Shane says:

Certain combinations of game-modes and weapons won’t give you the kill as the driver gets killed before the vehicle explodes. Yep, it’s that stupid. For example, I don’t think that using a DMR in 2x Score Attack counts as a kill.

Rockets or the sniper rifle will always work in any mode. The turret will only work in certain modes (not the 2x damage ones) and the FRG works in most, but not all, modes.

My advice is to watch some TV while you’re waiting to get a Sniperfight score attack then take Matthew and Scruff’s advice above.

  3. Tim Everitt says:

2x Score Attack on Holdout, you end up killing the driver of the Banshee before the Banshee itself, so it won’t count towards a vehicle. Been my experience anyway 😉

    • Scruff UK says:

Ugh, so now we have to kill the Banshee in a specific way?! In that case I’d try using an overcharged plasma pistol. If the Banshee falls off the side of the map, hopefully that counts as a kill? If it lands next to you, you could grenade it. Surely that’ll work?

I’m never going to get the FF commendation for killing vehicles, am I? *sigh*

  4. wnwoody says:

We just had a Flat Tire fairly recent. I had no problems with getting to ten last time. The best option to use to get the challenge is Sniperfight on Holdout. With the sniper rifle being so powerful it will take out the Banshee two shots, sometimes just one. If you take it out earlier enough another one will show up and you can get up to three Banshee kills in one game.

Sniper rifles work well against Wraiths as well, but I’ve only been able to get two in one game of firefight three times.

  5. MJOLNIR Tester says:

It took me only 2 minutes to complete Golden Opportunity. Start Winter Contingency from Rally Point Alpha. Get in the vehicle with Carter and Jorge. The gold Elite will appear at one of three places: the first house (on the left) you encounter after the first bridge you drive across, at the house next to the stream, or running down the road as you drive up the hill to the trapped troopers. Don’t stop to fight anyone, just stay in the vehicle and keep driving.

For the first, drive up the hill to the house and keep going under the breezeway that connects the house to the garage. Keep on going a little way, then power slide and turn the vehicle around and wait. If he is in that house he will run out in your direction. Splatter him.

If he doesn’t appear, turn the vehicle around and keep going down the road to the second house, next to the stream. Splatter the Grunts, then wait at the end of the bridge that crosses the stream and leads to the house. If goldie is in the house he will run out and try to cross the bridge (this is where mine was today). Splatter him.

If goldie doesn’t appear (don’t wait too long or you will miss the third location) head up the hill toward the trapped troopers. There will be two Skirmishers in the road, but don’t let them distract you. If goldie is in the third location he will come running down the road toward you. Splatter him.

In each case you must kill him quickly with a splatter before he disappears.

    • wnwoody says:

Thanks! I will be sure to try your method first, especially if it took approximately two minutes.

    • xoblivion2004 says:

I am afraid to splatter the Goldie…The last time I tried the dang thing armor locked on me. So, I just jump out and take it on then teabag it with my victory dance…

    • Jeremie says:

      MJOLNIR Tester – YOU ROCK!
Thanks so much! My goldie was in the third location and it took me 2 1/2 min to complete the challenge!

    • wnwoody says:

Is there a special way that you have to kill this golden bastard? I find him in the first location and killed him easily, three times….. but I was never given credit for it.

    • JXibalba says:

Thanks! Excellent tips – I had gotten him in that level before but it took several times driving around. This time I found him at location 2 crossing the bridge and took him out.

    • John says:

awesome advice! found goldie crossing the bridge at the second house. took 45 seconds to complete and on the first try (got lucky)!

oh and a note: he ran straight at me across the bridge (on heroic). didnt try to dodge the truck at all

  6. mac round fartz says:

in tip of the spear, there is a golden ranger elete on the cliff where you can safly use the warhog rockets to take out the first AA gun. if you get there fast enough and react fast enough he will be sitting on the top and slowly falling back down the otherside of the cliff as you give him hell.

  7. V4lkyrie246 says:

What lvl of difficulty are these special elites being found on? Are they only heroic and legendary?

    • MJOLNIR Tester says:

I don’t recall ever seeing one on Normal difficulty. The challenge specifies Heroic or Legendary, so you can’t do it on an easier level of difficulty. Don’t do it on Legendary though. On Legendary goldie has a concussion rifle instead of a plasma repeater and he will use it to tumble your vehicle.

      • V4lkyrie246 says:

Just to confirm that heroic works and it was the first house after rally point alpha for me, thanks took longer to load the mission then to finish the challenge 😛

  8. CaptainRon19 says:

Courtesy of this same challenge a few days ago, I found the quickest way to get a bunch of banshee kills is on holdout, obviously, but play Fiesta Attack and kill only the annoying grunts in the 1st wave (aka the fuel rod ones) then leave 3 or 4 alive to prolong the wave from ending. Just keep avoiding the grunts until a banshee comes out and kill it with a laser if you have one or if the weapon drop spawned one. KEEP THOSE GRUNTS ALIVE and another banshee will come out eventually, follow this pattern on holdout and you should be able to get 10 banshee kills in 4-5 games depending on if you are able to kill 3 in a game. You can usually get 2 a game, but just keep in mind the laser is key to making it easy.

  9. Chris says:

Got back to back 4x banshee kills on Sniper Holdout as already mentioned just drag the game out till the end , got my final one with one second to spare , just kept running around with last grunt in high speed pursuit …

    regards

  10. Cash says:

Great tips thanks. I really enjoyed how you picked a random number such as 97% to represent the amount of headshots a person gets in Swat. I found it funny.

  11. Rob says:

Looks like today would be a good day to dust off the PS3 and knock out some New Vegas.

  12. Peter says:

almost done for the day, thanks for the great tips!!!

  13. Moukoko Warrior says:

did BOB one in 3 mins went winter contingcy, rally point alpha on herioc drove right then left at fork drove past the final compound where you should make a stand against the dropships then run him over a couple of times. job done.

  14. MikePitch says:

I started on Winter at rally point Alpha and got the gold ranger elite in 1:17… Couldn’t have been a better time lol

  15. Cheborneck says:

If you’re lucky enough to get sniper attack on holdout, clear out all but a few grunts in the first wave. Then camp in the grows nest for the rest of the game. I got 5 banshee in one game. Most other maps are hit and miss for one vehicle (if you’re lucky). You can get a couple with rockets on holdout. Sniper is the best.

  16. Jaxsis says:

So I just killed 3 banshees in Score 2x on holdout with an AR (I am trying to progress my automatic weapon commendation) and I did not get credit for any of them. What gives? What am I doing wrong? I guess I will have to try using a sniper rifle like the comments suggest. If anyone knows why I am not getting credit for the vehicle kills, please let me know.

    • You should have gotten the credit for the kills. Why should you using the sniper rifle have anything to do with it. Did you actually blow it up or just kill the guy driving it?

Matt, congrats on your hit count. Great accomplishment!

      • Jaxsis says:

I watched them explode right in front of me. I don’t get dumb. I am not a fan of the flat tire challenge.

      • Jaxsis says:

um … I am not sure what “I don’t get dumb” was meant to be. I think I had two thoughts at the same time and them both got put into the same sentence. 🙂

  17. Shobaleader One says:

Gold ranger – nightfall, assassinate the elite at the start then run down up to the small cluster of buildings and keep left – if you’re lucky the gold ranger will have his back to you – assassinate him and its an easy 2500 points, did it in 1 minute

  19. Chris Atreides says:

Flat tire =’s the dumbest challenge. Who wants to look for Banshee’s for an hour and a half??? And that’s if you actually shoot the Banshee not the “pilot?” Rant complete Heart Rate back to normal. Lol. Cheers!

  20. Cheborneck says:

Golden Opportunity – not too hard. As mentioned in previous post do winter contingency but it’s rally point A not B. And do it on legendary or there’s no guarentees. Drive the car until you start down the hill toward the rally point (where the 2 skirmishers are at) and get out. He comes running up toward you. Shoot and melee. If you die you restart with him running up the hill towards you again. Tits!

  21. Yes By Deadly says:

Flat tire is such a stupid challenge, not worth it what so ever.

    • Edward (Marshy 40) says:

Absolutely. I got it once, but it required a lot of time, mainly waiting for sniperfight on Holdout to come up. Went through two rotations yesterday without getting that combination once. I don’t understand why score attack does not let you choose the map and type off the bat.

  22. Eyesac says:

great location guide for BOBs on winter cont.
