16th April – Reach Daily Challenges Commentary

So a big mix today, and our usual weekend Legendary Campaign mission challenge…

Light Fare – Kill 100 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 1000 cR

If you want to do this specifically (as you’ll probably getting it just playing for the next challenges) then jump into something on Score Attack, maybe Gruntpocalypse, 2X Score Attack or Fiesta Attack to get it done quickly and rack up the kills.

Came From Behind – Perform 3 Assassinations in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 1200 cR

3 assassinations in one game can be tricky. A good new option is Hockey, in the Action Sack Community game types. Assassination is the best kill method although remember that everyone else will be doing this too probably! If you’re lucky you’ll find someone who’s AFK and you can hunt them down during the match.  It’s cheap but knowing spawn points can help you in regular multiplayer games – the rocks in Asylum for instance, or favourite camping positions like the lofts in Cage and Pinnacle or the lift in Reflection. Another good tactic is Sniper and DMR game types, since people can’t see their motion trackers when zoomed in you might be able to sneak up on them. Don’t forget that reloading and sprinting make noise so people know you’re there. Anyone who has watched the Halo Reach Mythbusters series will know that assassinating someone on a moving platform, and sometimes on unusual terrain, does not trigger the animation but counts, so that could be useful (I know I’ve been assassinated on the ramp on Pinnacle but the animation didn’t play).

Be Their Huckleberry – Kill 50 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking with the Pistol – 1000 cR

Try and get a Gruntpocalypse games in so you can stick to just the pistol, take out the little methane breathers as quick as possible then back in the menu to get it done. Some maps are definitely better than others, Corvette and Courtyard are small and easy to see across to take them out. I personally think Holdout’s an evil little map, although that’s when it introduces the tougher enemies in Score Attack.

L.D. Winter – Complete Winter Contingency, without dying, on Legendary with Mythic, Thunderstorm, Tilt and Tough Luck on – 5000 cR

It’s not particularly hard on Winter Contingency, especially if you follow Tyrant’s Mythic guide, for the most part you can run the map and stay in the jeep to run things over and let Noble team do a lot of the work. What makes it hard is the base section. I always say take out the Elite with the Concussion Rifle at the beginning, so keep peppering him with shots and take him down. Use DMR and grenades on the Jackals and Grunts, then when you get to the last section use a Plasma Pistol overcharge on the Sword Elite and headshot him with the DMR. If you get really stuck, there is a glitch which can be exploited, by exiting the game and restarting from last checkpoint it opens up the challenge again, and you can continue from where you died. Also have a look at this post, and particularly the comments, for the previous LASO guide to WC.

If you have any helpful tips for these please post them in the comments.

    Woot! First Comment!
This guide has been extremely helpful, and thanks to the community that is posting their own tips. I’ve been following for a while and havent posted but once.

Recently I’ve gotten my hands on Halo 2 and now have the complete series without the full campaigns recorded on my xbox 360, so that’s my spring break goal.
These are some challenges that i can fit in easily, and a few days of challenges like this should get me colonel (im commander gr3)

Holy Sh*t I am shaking so bad IDK why.
    Xbox, do your magic…

    Gamertag is cubedude925

  2. Mark William Heard says:

Is the ‘without dying’ part of the final daily challenge real? As it doesn’t say this on the bungie list.

    • michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

When i looked at the challenges on the Bungie.net page it does say complete without dying. Dont worry though, if you die just use the save and exit trick.

  3. Tom says:

3 Assassinations in 1 match for on 1200 cr? Well that’s annoying. I guess I’ll be playing some snipers…

  4. michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

Ok, to get the 3 Assasinations in one game i am going to say go with Hockey. Im the guy that runs around getting kills and not really fooling with the ball unless its close. I actually got 10 or 12 assasinations in 1 game of this not too long ago and i think a friend of mine got more, so this is the gametype to go for. Good luck! 😉

    • Tom says:

Hockey? Haven’t heard of this. Where can I find it?

      • michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

Hockey is in the Action Sack playlist. Everyone has overshields and unlimited sprint. There is a golfball used as the puck and everyone has a golfclub that swings like a hammer. Pretty fun if you play with some friends so you can work together.

    • John says:

Agreed, I think Hockey is probably the easiest way to get the multiple assassinations as I usually very quickly lose count of the number of times I get assassinated when trying to get the ball going in the right direction.

    • Tom says:

Thanks a lot, tried hockey out and literaly got the challenge in the first thirty seconds.

  5. Austin Kurtz says:

Here’s what I do for quick completions of the kill challenges in “any game mode” when I’m short on time. I made some modifications to Matthew’s excellent “Firefight Invincible” variant…

    * 100% grunts
    * Removed the Mythic and Tilt skulls -- no need to make enemies harder to kill since we're not going for points anyway
    * Removed the Cloud skull and set radar to 75m -- so you can see where all grunts are at all times (on Corvette, at least)
    * Reduced enemy health to 10%
    * Turned off enemy grenades -- so the grunts can't kill each other as easily
    * One loadout with jetpack, needler, and rocket launcher -- needler is best here because...
        * It's fully automatic and has an insanely fast firing rate (with the bottomless clip) -- so your trigger finger won't get tired (you could tape the button down if you wanted)
        * The needles track the grunts -- closest thing to an aimbot that you're allowed to use without being banned
        * With these settings, it only takes one needle to kill anywhere on an unshielded enemy, so you can pick up easy multikills by spraying fire indiscriminately

Settings are on my fileshare as FF Grunt Grind if you’re interested. As always, play on Corvette, and you might as well do Legendary since it doesn’t affect how fast you can kill the grunts. I found that hovering just above the center and spraying needles at each door and group of grunts was very fast. I was able to get 488 kills in 12 minutes.

100 kills takes about 3 minutes. Have fun!

    • Lex says:

Really dude you gotta resort to the invincible game type to get a hundred kills? I mean I can understand doing it for the 500000 points challenge but common dude a game type that gives you no commendation points and like 3cr for completing the match. If you’re gonna do all that for a 1000cr then u can easily run a gruntpoc match get the challenge plus another 1900cr just for completing it.

      • Clone 066 says:

He’s been doing this for a few days now–same message And everything. He’s just wants to get people to download his variant. And sombody else blog for his benefit nexus he’s to lame to work to get a popular blog of his own.

      • Austin Kurtz says:

I did say that the method was for people who are short on time. There is no disputing that the variant above is the absolute fastest way to complete these challenges, so I think it’s worth mentioning on a blog that’s specifically meant to help people complete challenges more easily.

I usually use this to “mop up” the remaining kills for this challenge without playing a full round of Firefight. This was especially helpful on Wednesday, when the challenge called for 400 kills.

And in terms of credits per minute, it’s still a better return to complete this challenge in two minutes than to play a full Gruntpoc game — and it feels like less of a grind, too.

To each his own — everyone can feel free to use it or ignore it. I appreciate that you posted an alternative suggestion, but the tearing down of other people’s suggestions isn’t as constructive.

      • Austin Kurtz says:

I’m just offering a helpful suggestion, not spam Matthew’s blog. I’m sorry to be a nuisance to those of you who read the comments every day — but most people do not, so I’ve been posting this message once per day (three times so far) when an “any game mode” challenge has appeared.

I will gladly stop posting it when either
        1) A reasonable amount of time has passed (probably a couple weeks), or
        2) Matthew asks me to stop because he doesn’t like it, or
        3) when he starts including it in his commentary for these challenges (it’s currently the fastest method that I know of), or
        4) when someone finds a faster/easier method of completing this challenge.

      • (Matthew – i hope i am not overstepping any bounds here, feel free to take away my birthday if i am!)

        1. it has been posted daily for the past few days, continuing to post it daily is not necessary. i’d wager most are tired of seeing it and at this point don’t find it very helpful since getting 100 kills is not complicated or hard.

        2. i’m not Matthew but *I* will kindly ask you to stop spamming the comments with the same post over and over and adding nothing else to the commentary.

        3. Matthew is under ZERO obligation to post your “suggestion” in his blog for the simple reason that it’s HIS blog. he can post whatever thoughts, methods, and opinions he wants and should not be subjected to the, “*MY* way is better so you HAVE to post it!” in order to reduce unnecessary and repetitive comments.

        4. this is a moot point. the “easier” way is whichever way the player wants to accomplish it, period. myself, 100 enemies is NOTHING and i can get that done in a fairly quick amount of time.

      • Austin Kurtz says:

Okay, here’s my last word on this thread…

I’m not trying to coerce anyone to do anything, I will continue to post this when I think it could be helpful, and I’m sorry if I’m offending anyone by doing so.

Can’t we all get along? ;]

      • John says:

Yes we can get along fine if you stop spamming that gametype here, it’s not very considerate when several people have voiced their discontent at the posts but you’ve said essentially you don’t care and will carry on. I also agree with the other posts above I don’t even think it’s a good suggestion in the first place, a game of score attack doesn’t take much longer and is far more worthwhile in terms of credits and practice as well as possibly fulfilling other challenges like it has today which means even more credits.

    • Matthew Vose says:

Right… why do I keep FF Invincible that way? Because it also lets you grab achievements and other targets. Why do I not recommend switching to Grunts? Because the time is not affected that much, and blasting Elites with the big guns is fun. Why do I not recommend this for only 100 kills? Because of everything everyone else said.

Austin – You know I’m never going to ask you not to comment. However choose where you do it better, yesterday wasn’t the right place because of the low kill volume, which is why I think it riled a few people. If you are going to post please don’t use the PRE formatiting you’ve done above for the list, just post it as text.

Snickerdoodle – I wouldn’t dare be brave enought to take your birthday away, in fact you can have a second one to keep you calm :p

Everyone – Thanks for keeping this as a debate/discussion rather than bitching. This isn’t the Bungie Forums, and if it became like that I’d be taking action straight away.

      • Austin Kurtz says:

Thanks for your reasonable response, Matthew. I’ll limit it to days when it is not likely to be picked up in the other challenge types (e.g. not today, when everyone is likely to be playing a good deal of Firefight).

      • michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

I know exactally what you mean about the Bungie forums Matthew. I only look at them every now and then because there is so much chaos on them and downing of people. And i thank you for not having your site that way!

  6. Niisama Broham says:

Another trick for the Sword Elite at the end of Winter Contingency; my wife used to have trouble aiming at things charging toward her (panic attack lol). If you can get the Sword Elite close enough to you, you can turn and run (sprint) back up the stairs toward Jorge. I’d say 80% of the time, the elite will follow you all the way to Jorge. You can then jump off to the right into the pit where the boxes, dropshield and shotgun are. The Sword Elite will then focus on Jorge. At that point, you can aim for the head with ease or if you’re daring sneak back up to the upper level and assassinate.

    • John says:

Agreed, this is how I normally get the sword Elite as well as he’s a pain in the neck with mythic on.

  7. Clone066 says:

All Challanges complete. Did the assassinations in speedboat in action sack.

      • Clone066 says:

Lol stupid iTouch, likes to change what i say. I meant speedflag a CTF variant.

      • Agoldsniper says:

Hey man. Do you have any idea how to get the Pilot Haunted Helmet?

      • michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

Well Agoldsniper, from what i have heard you have to buy all base helmets and you have to reach the rank of Inheritor to be able to buy it. Once you buy all base helmets and reach Inheritor you can buy it for 1CR. Thats just what i have heard. I want to get it too but right now im just a Hero, but i will be a Legend in a day or 2! 🙂

      • Agoldsniper says:

Thanks mic. That really sucks. I’m a Brigadier and I thought u just had to buy the pilot base. I really want that one but ah well guess I will nvr get it.

      • ooooooooh speedflag, hahahaha! i thought speedboat was a new variant and i was immensely curious!

and ditto michael on the haunted helmet, that’s what i’ve heard too.

    • Clone 066 says:

Bah May name has been wrong. It’s Clone 066

  8. michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

All challenges completed! Pretty easy if you get into the right gametype. Light Fare and Be Their Huckleberry can be done easily in a game of Gruntpocalypse. The Came From Behind challenge is easily done in Hockey, and everyone should be a pro at Winter Contingency, plus you can do this in co-op. Good luck everyone!

  9. Chris Atreides says:

So I killed 11 guys from behind, and only recorded 2 assassinations? Why Halo community, why???

    • michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

Sounds like what happened to me earlier. I never could get Hockey to come up in Action Sack so i jumped into a game of Rumble Pit to get the 3 Assasinations. I wound up getting 4 altogether but the challenge only recorded 2. At the stats screen after the game it said i got 4 assasinations but no challenge. I could understand if it didnt do the assasination animation but it did all 4 times. I got into another game of Rumble Pit and did 3 and it recorded all 3 for the challenge. Glad to know im not the only one it happens to. 😦

    • are you guys actually getting the animation assassinations or just whacking them with the hammer quickly? just hitting them quickly doesn’t count, i don’t think…

      • michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

Hi Snickerdoodle. When i was in the first game of Rumble Pit i was able to get 4 assasinations and it did the animation for all 4 of them, yet the challenge only said i got 2. The second game i was able to get 3 and it recorded all 3. I dont know what was up with it. lol.

      • Clone 066 says:

It days assignation that generally means holding down the melée button. A regular backtap is a ninja medal. I did by making 3 assassinations holding down B–I use recon.

  10. EyeOhYou (Andrew) says:

    Really easy challenges today.

As recommended, hit action sack all the way for the assassination challenge. Even if you don’t get Hockey, the challenge can still be done in HaloBall Xtreme rather easily.

    Goodluck everyone!

  11. John says:

Are there any tricks to get around Grunts shooting down the Falcon around the middle of Winter Contingency aside from restarting the level if the checkpoint is already done? I actually find this the trickiest part of the level as the little scumbags are so keen on their charged plasma pistols that even when I think I’m keeping them distracted one of them manages to hit the Falcon.

    John

    • wait, i’m confused…grunts shoot down a falcon? do you mean when they are dropping you at the base or somewhere else?

have you checked out Tyrant’s guide yet?

    • Austin Kurtz says:

I believe John may be following the method where you EMP and “steal” a Falcon near the beginning, a la this video on High Speed Halo. This method is significantly easier than Tyrant’s walkthrough, but not as well known.

John, if that’s the method you’re using, what I normally do when I get to the base is hover just above the ground near the gate (opposite the side where Kat is working on the door). If the grunts EMP you there, it’s only a short drop to the ground, and you can begin firing again very soon (without flipping over and falling out of the Falcon). The cover is also better over there. Make sure to stay out of reach of the sword Elite that comes in the second wave, though — he’s quite good at highjacking the Falcon if it gets too close.

  12. oooooh hey neat!

i’m lazy and just run through the whole thing. takes me maybe 10 minutes. 🙂

    • Austin Kurtz says:

Awesome that you can do it that quickly! The current known “world record” for a Winter run-through is 12 minutes, 8 seconds (using the “Falcon Skip”), so if you have something faster, I would recommend submitting it to High Speed Halo to get credit for it. :]

      • michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

Me and my son decided to try to run through Winter Contingency lastnight on easy just to see what our time would be. We went through it without using the Falcon in 11:07. Like i said though it was on easy!

      • Austin Kurtz says:

Michael — that’s great! I think you can still submit it if you want, since they take speed runs from all difficulties. The 12:08 was a SLASO run, but I don’t see any time posted under “Easy Co-Op” yet — although it looks like they’re behind in updating the table, because the SLASO time isn’t on there yet either.

  13. REvOfEv EcHELoN (Lex) says:

Ok I need a little help! I finished the LD Winter challenge on coop and it said I completed it but I’m not sure I got the Cr. Here’s how it went down normally when you beat it the mission ends and you get your Cr total for the game counted up, however my coop partner was host and at the end instead of ending the mission it started ONI automatically and I had to end it manually. When it counted the credits the total was 0 but it said the challenge was completed. I’m Legend rank and 5000cr is barely any movement on the rank scale thingy and like an idiot I didn’t look to see how many credits I had before the match. Im just wondering if anyone knows if it automatically added it? I asked a buddy of mine and he said he got his at the end of the mission in the Cr summary page it said 5000 but it didn’t automatically start the next mission for him. Any help on the subject will be much appreciated.

    • michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

I play a lot of co-op in Multiplayer Matchmaking and Campaign. When i do a challenge and i am in split screen playing with my son, after i know for a fact i got the challenge done it doesnt say anything right then like it does when playing single player. After the game is over it doesnt show the credit total gained for that game either, it just goes to the Main Menu for some reason. At the Main Menu it has that little thing come up for a second showing the challenge was completed. Myself id say that you got the credits for the challenge but it just didnt show the credits gained screen since you were playing with someone else. Oh and another thing is if you are playing with another person online and they are the host, after the game is over and the credit screen comes up if they press B it will skip the credit screen and go straight to the Main Menu. That was maybe what happened. Hope this helped, sorry for so much typing!

      • REvOfEv EcHELoN (Lex) says:

Thanks a lot Michael! Yea I think that’s what ended up happening and I believe I got the credits. And I was thinking the challenges that require you to comete a certain number of games never get added up on the screen but it says they’re completed. O and don’t be sorry broski the advice was much obliged and I appreciate that you wrote a lot. 🙂

  14. Braythor says:

Can someone give me advice – I just bought the noble map pack and I’m wondering if it will now come up in the normal matchmaking menus. I played a few BTB and team slayer but there was no sign of any of the new maps. To play them I had to go on the specific noble pack menu. Is this how they work or have I just been unlucky with the voting?

    • REvOfEv EcHELoN (Lex) says:

Theyre in the playlist called DLC enjoy!

    • REvOfEv EcHELoN (Lex) says:

Oh and Anchor 9 will sometimes show up in Slayer games, Breakpoint in Invasion, and Tempest in Big Team but I do believe they only show up outside of the DLC playlist when everyone in your party has the map pack. Which by now a lot of people have so the chances that you’ll get one are fairly high.

      • Braythor says:

Cheers for that, I’ll stick on the DLC menu then, as they’re not showing up on anything else and I’ve only played Breakpoint so far…thanks again.
