12th May – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

Today’s challenges are below, click Read More to view the commentaries:

  1. One Spartan Army – Kill 250 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking – 1875 cR
  2. Scoped – Kill 100 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking with precision weapons – 1000 cR
  3. Grunt Spelunking – Kill 1000 enemies on Glacier in Firefight Matchmaking – 3000 cR
  4. Demon – Kill 30 Elites in Firefight Matchmaking – 1200 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

One Spartan Army – Kill 250 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking – 1875 cR

You get 120 Grunts in Gruntpocalypse, and 120 in 2X Score Attack. But go after the third challenge (if you’re going to do it) since that’ll definitely get you this one.

Scoped – Kill 100 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking with precision weapons – 1000 cR

Precision weapons are the DMR, Sniper Rifle, Focus Rifle and Needle Rifle – note not the pistol! Gruntpocalypse/Score Attack variants will get you through this challenge in one game if you stick with the DMR. Try and get it on Glacier so you can start your grind towards…

Grunt Spelunking – Kill 1000 enemies on Glacier in Firefight Matchmaking – 3000 cR

An entirely new challenge!! And, ummm… this is a grind. So you could try and get Firefight Arcade on Glacier, which gives you 330 or more enemies, but split between up to 4 people, and there’s no guarantee of getting the map too. However if you go into Score Attack it’s a lot easier to just keep going through until Glacier becomes an option and playing it. If you can stick to Gruntpocalypse or 2X Score Attack since they’re the easier modes, avoid Skirmageddon like the plague, especially on this map. Sadly you’re looking at 8-11 games probably, but think of all the credits you’ll get for doing those games, plus a tasty digestif of 3000 to cap it off.

Demon – Kill 30 Elites in Firefight Matchmaking – 1200 cR

And again if you can do a couple of Score Attack/2XSA on Glacier you should get this. If you want to do this specifically Rocketfight’s usually a good one here, especially since they often up the amount of Elites you get, particularly in the Bonus Round. Fiesta Attack gave a lot more Elites than I’d seen before, but only about 25, and I think there were about 28 in the 2x Score Attack I played.

Thanks for everyone who played last night. It was an awesome night with some great games being played – trying out Squad Slayer and some BTB games was a lot of fun (the really random Custom Games were, well, really random). Anyone have any favourite quotes or moments from the evening? I think the 10 year old hitting on Snicks was just adorable, although he got booted pretty quick so that tells you how well it goes down with her XD. And our DinoBlasters game against the guys who didn’t use the jetpacks was just plain weird!

Huge thanks to our PL’s for this week, I think it was enjoyed by everyone, and I’ll be updating the pages over the next couple of days for next week.

If anyone’s in the more Eastern time zones (I mean Australia, Japan etc) hit up Sir Galahad for possible playtimes over a weekend or something. It’s a bit hard to be inclusive to everyone, but if you want to arrange stuff in the comments then have at it.

Wow. 1000 enemies in firefight matchmaking! That’s got to be 8-10 games! And it has to be on Glacier too. A few games you might not even get Glacier. Hmmm I’d think the payout should be more like 5000 cR, not 3000.
The others would come to you anyway so just try to get Glacier all the time.

How was the game night? Who won the most? And who got pwnd!?!

    • Alexandra says:

O_O 1000…. eh ooooookayyy, dont see the point of doing this XD only 3k…. u can get that in one firefight = 10-15mins.

      • Alexandra says:

Think it would suit better for a weekly, with more creds ofc

      • Sir Galahad 63 says:

I think it’s too small for a weekly, maybe 10000 enemies in campaign or firefight would be a better weekly, with maybe 10 or 15 000 cR.

    • michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

I played like 3 games of Multi-Team and i guess you could say i was the one that got pwnd. Oh well, i tried! LoL. πŸ˜‰ It was fun though. I havent really played Multi-Team until then and i gotta say its about too hectic for me. Next time i think i will join in on Team Slayer or BTB.

    • Niisama Broham says:

Whoa, now 10000 enemies would be a real grind! You already did the math. Today will be 9-10 games for just the 1000 if you play Score Attack.

10000 over a week, you’ll be playing at least 13-14 games a day for 7 days! That’s stretching the games out over 7 days and doing the minimum each day. Assuming 110 kills each game, you’re looking at 91 games total lol.

5000 Enemies for 10k on any FF map would be a fair weekly I think.

A game of 2x Attack could be knocked out in 5-10 minutes with ~120 kills.

      • Sir Galahad 63 says:

Yeah, maybe 10 000 be too many, but then again if it were a choice to do it in campaign too, you could just do ONI Sword base target locator trick.

    • John says:

I’m pleased to see a bigger challenge on FF Thursday, I’ve been disappointed they’ve not really built up FF Thursday as usually you can get them all in a couple of games rather than something to work a bit more for.

That said I’m disappointed it’s map specific, it pretty much rules out Limited/Arcade as there’s few map choices coming up each time.

  2. you know you liked Whack a Mole. it’s totally the best custom game ever. πŸ˜‰

    • Matthew Vose says:

Ummmm… I’m not sure what to say to that. Perhaps I need to equip Bumper Jumper for that one.

      • dude. way better than getting rained on by golf balls! πŸ˜€

      • Matthew Vose says:

Amen to that. But why do that stuff when you have Dino Blaster? Or To The Death!??

      • Scruff UK says:

I quite enjoyed getting rained on by golf balls, though I thought that the climb part should’ve been easier and the descent part should’ve been harder.

Generally I do avoid Custom Games though. That said, a good Race game can be *genius*. I wish Bungie would hurry up and make a dedicated Race playlist!

And no, NEVER To The Death!! πŸ˜‰

      • i’d rather be rained on by golf balls than play TTD. :O

      • Sir Galahad 63 says:

Could someone explain what ‘Whack a mole’ is like in Reach?

    • John says:

Getting an overkill on whack a mole last week is one of my proudest Reach moments πŸ˜€

  3. mickoboy90 says:

I think i will bypass for the 1000 kills on glacier…just do sniper fight for 2-3 games in ff arcade, and its guarantee u should get three of them…then for me its continue the weekly.

  4. Tom says:

Its annoying to get such a big Firefight grind when the weekly is in MM… I’ll still do it though, I can’t help myself.

    • it’s thursday! thursdays are always all FF. tomorrow will be all MM. πŸ™‚

      • Tom says:

Yes, I realise its Firefight thursday πŸ˜›

I was seriously expecting that due to the weekly they would give us some easy FF challenges we could swing through in a couple of games, not an 8 game grind. Though, the fact I got a gold commendation in the first game made it a bit better.

      • oooooh i see what you mean, gotcha now!

  5. SangheiliSean says:

wish I could have gone to game night, but 8p.m. for you is 3p.m. for me, thats just as I get home from school and usually I got homework. :(,
how long dose it last? might be able to join later.

  6. Scruff UK says:

Hahahahaha 1000 kills on Glacier. A minor whinge about the map-specific FF challenges – I think that on a day when a specific map is requested, that map should be the first choice in matchmaking. Because there’s been a couple of times when I’ve gone onto Score Attack, exhausted all my “none of the above” options, and *still* not been able to select the map I wanted. Agh.
Irrelevant anyway since I don’t have time for 2 games of FF tonight, let alone 8! πŸ˜‰

Game night was quality, I wish I could’ve hung around for longer. Regarding the hub page; will the comments from there be deleted as the next game night is announced? Could get confusing for people otherwise.
I particularly enjoyed the Rocket Hog Race games, and me and Braythor getting heavily smack-talked by an American guy in Multi Team!

    • yeah, i think we’re planning on basically refreshing the page weekly so it won’t get too confusing. πŸ™‚

    • Matthew Vose says:

Yeah, we’ll go through and delete any comments that are week specific (and make a decision on any others) so it’s fresh as the driven yellow snow for the next week. πŸ˜€

    • t-rOY says:

I hear ya on the map-specific challenges. Its very frustrating to cycle through all the choices and get every other map with every game type as a selection and find yourself stuck with a crappy game type on a crappy map. However me and some buddies found that if you go to Halo Waypoint from the start menu just before the game starts, it doesn’t count in your game history. I’ve done this maybe 8 times over the last 3 months and it seems to work out fine.

  7. Sergeant Jinto says:

“If anyone’s in the more Eastern time zones (I mean Australia, Japan etc) hit up Sir Galahad for possible playtimes over a weekend or something. It’s a bit hard to be inclusive to everyone, but if you want to arrange stuff in the comments then have at it.”

    This! =D (In Japan)

  8. Spunkypantastic says:

In the style of Brucie – ”good game, good game”

Nice mix last night, I actually played reasonably well! Even managed a killing frenzy in rocket hog race πŸ™‚

Low point was being splattered by loreweaver during neutral bomb, though getting a revenge by blowing his ghost up with my dmr took the edge off the pain!

    • a frenzy in RHR?? that’s impressive!

      • michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

Yeah RHR was fun! I suck at driving the Warthog so before the game started i said, please dont be in the drivers seat over and over, but of course it started and there i was. LoL. How many flips does it take to get to the center of the circle? LoL, about 47. πŸ˜‰

    • Sir Galahad 63 says:

Yeah that’s awesome! There must have been slot of people not actually in the hogs…

  9. Sir Galahad 63 says:

Hey Matt, I was just thinking, how long are you planning to keep RDC up and running, and updating it everyday? Because within the next year or two Bungie will stop creating new challenges and just put them on a loop and forget about it. Also I do hate to say this but soon Halo Reach will be forgotten too, as new games will come out and less people will play.
I really would hate to see all that 😦

    • Matthew Vose says:

Honestly I thought I would have stopped it by now. But given that I’m currently getting twice the visitors per day I did in January it’s going to stay for a while. My feeling is 343 will take over challenges at some point and start introducing different things into it to maintain the popularity.

Today’s got an entirely new challenge, and I wonder if there’s not some deeper meaning behind making a LOT of people play Glacier (server testing, map testing, matchmaking changes etc). When the site’s popularity dwindles and it’s obviously not that useful I’ll stop doing it, or morph it into something else (depends what Halo CE HD and Halo 4 bring us), but until then it’s good fun.

      • Scruff UK says:

Well… That’s true of anything, isn’t it? xbox360achievements.org will cease to be relevant when the next Xbox is released, but that doesn’t mean it should stop now. Also lots of stuff that finished long ago is still very popular online; just do a quick Google search of Amiga games, or the TV show Twin Peaks, and various other things from the 90’s.

Halo 3 – Halo THREE, a four-year-old game – is still one of the top 10 most played games on Xbox Live, every single week, and has been since day of release. We’ve got a long, long time before Reach drops out of popularity. It may become more of a cult thing, yeah, but it’ll still be around.

As far as Halo: CE HD goes, my personal theory is that it’ll be like Halo 3: ODST. Mid-price, and with “the complete Reach multiplayer experience” bundled in, with a third DLC pack. Halo 4 won’t be around for another year or two, I think. Halo’s not COD; we’re not going to get a new installment every year.

      • John says:

I’ll be surprised if 343 industries don’t work on new challenges – they’re very simple to do, there’s been lots of great new suggestions on forums and they keep people playing the game.

      • michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

Does the Halo CE HD have anything new in it other than the graphics?

      • Matthew Vose says:

I suspect we’ll hear all about it at PAX Prime end of August. And I’m probably not going to the Halo Fest anymore. 😦

      • Scruff UK says:

Halo CE HD isn’t even confirmed yet, but I think everyone knows it’s going to be. My pet theory for this afternoon that I’ve just invented is that it’ll be DLC for Reach. Releasing it like this would help tie up a lot of contradictory and vague statements!

I’d expect new graphics, co-op campaign, FF modes… And maybe, if we’re extra, extra lucky, a special extended version of The Library! Wooooooooooooooooo!! πŸ˜‰

It’s interesting, how it’ll work and all, since the Halo engine’s changed a lot since the first game. You couldn’t even pick up plasma swords in the first one. Would they add Brutes in, where they didn’t exist before? And that Banshee that appears right at the start of the first level? Seems worthy of a skyjacking, if you ask me! πŸ˜‰

      • Matthew Vose says:

I’m pretty sure it’s going to be out in November, the 10 year anniversary of the franchise:

Given it’s on Joystiq, who won’t publish if they’re not sure (they didn’t out the name of Kinect a couple of months ahead because they weren’t certain) I’m confident in this.

      • Darth Malber says:

What would be nice is a boxed set of a remasterd Halo: CE and Halo:2 with Live multiplayer capability. It’s near impossible to find Halo: 2 on the used market since Gamestop doesn’t stock or accept for trade original XBOX titles.

  10. michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

I am going to try for the Glacier challenge but the bad part about it is that for some reason when i play Score Attack on Glacier it always has some glitch to it. Maybe Matthew is right, they might be doing some testing on this seeing how i never glitch at all on the other Score Attack maps.

    • Sir Galahad 63 says:

      What sort of glitch?

    • Scruff UK says:

I hope they haven’t removed my sniper safe zone at the top of the crane! πŸ˜‰

    • michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

No. What i am talking about is i guess you would call lag. Its like the gameplay slows when i play Glacier and its jumpy. But the crane thing is cool!

      • Chris says:

That’s ironic , its the only format I can play for now .Well without controller, headset etc getting
smashed …. starts getting expensive after a while πŸ™‚

      • Matthew Vose says:

I get the same thing on Glacier. Random, it might be because of the size of the map and amount of stuff to deal with, I’ve heard Bungie say on videos that it can strain things having the scenery like that (I think they were discussing Breakpoint or something in the Defiant pack at the time).

      • Scruff UK says:

Ah, the lag? Yeah, it’s horrible, it’s like playing in treacle. It’s not so bad in single-player; it can drag a little when I’m at the top of the crane and I’m not using the scope, but in multiplayer it is utterly hideous in every single game of Glacier. Seems odd when my connection can handle a 16 player BTB game with no problem whatsoever. Perhaps that’s the issue they’re trying to work on!

      • michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

I hope so Scruff. Well as soon as im done playing around with Brink i will begin my days work on Glacier. LoL! πŸ˜‰

      • Chris says:

“Seems odd when my connection can handle a 16 player BTB game with no problem whatsoever”

cause the net code is synchronous in campaign/firefight and asynchronous in custom games/forge etc.

      • t-rOY says:

Yep. Glacier still lags for me and of all times on the 4th wave in Score Attack which I like to refer to as the “skirmageddon wave”. Don’t understand how a single-player game can lag, but it is what it is for now. Btw whoever created skimishers, focus rifles, and came up with the idea that warthogs can be flipped by BRs in Halo 3 & by focus rifles in Reach can K.M.A.

      • Chris says:

“Don’t understand how a single-player game can lag”

your talking more input lag here rather than connection lag, if it was a PC you’d upgrade your graphics card or SLi them and the frame rate up.Not quite so easy to do on a wee Xbox .:(

Gives a good insight into what steering a super-tanker must be like though πŸ™‚

    • kurt says:

Hey Michael, I’ve played Glacier a bunch of times and never went over to the “crane”, where is it exactly?

      • michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

Its hard to explain. When i heard about it i had to google it and watch a video of someone getting there, so thats probably your best bet in finding it. When you spawn inside the building go out and to your left close to where the turret is. Turn around towards the building and use the jetpack to get on top of it. Once on top of the building there is a crane-like extension sticking up. You have to be careful because the timer starts ticking down so you dont have a lot of time. Just try to get on top of the extension to where the timer stops counting down. Atleast i think this is the one everyone is talking about. Am i right anyone? Or is the place i described a different one?

      • Chris says:

I know were you mean Dr,but if you search uTube with “Halo Reach FireFight Hiding Spots – Glacier ”
there’s a nice video showing that spot amongst others. Its a lot easier to show than explain in words,
if you know what I mean.

      • michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

Yeah i know exactally what you mean. LoL. i will check it out, thanks Chris.

  11. Justin says:

If my commendation for killing grunts wasn’t already in the onyx tier I might consider that challenge… but since I won’t really get anything from it aside from the precision weapon commendation, it probably isn’t worth my time.

    • Chris says:

“but since I won’t really get anything”

Apart from Riflin Through, perfectionist, trigger happy, methodical, pull the pin,in command, grounded etc etc
Be gratefully you haven’t maxed them out and have to play Skirmageddon using the pistol to get your kick’s
      is quite challenging πŸ™‚

      • michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

Skirmageddon? Boooo! Now thats a tough game. The last game i played of that was on Corvette and i finished the game with 2 lives left. They definately turn the Needle Rifle into an automatic weapon!

      • whoever invented skirmageddon should be forced to live that game endlessly.

      • Chris says:

Not a game to up the Perfectionist commendation that one πŸ™‚

I like the SWAT type one headshot kill feel to it , the way the one with little hand
shields defects bullets is pretty sweet , but not as sweet as the little Grunt dance they do
just before the headshot makes the confetti fly .Ah well what’s the saying small thinks
        amuse small minds πŸ™‚

      • Justin says:

I was a little hung over when I wrote that so I wasn’t thinking very clearly… I did end up doing the challenge and made ~20000 credits including the bonus credits. Not bad.

  12. Pirate Drummer says:

You know, you’d think with a challenge requiring 1,000 kills on one particular map, they’d make it show up a little more often…

    • Chris says:

that’s what makes it a challenge πŸ™‚ , on a scale of 1 to 10 how annoying is it when the map you want
      doesn’t turn up?

    • John says:

Definitely, I’ve had several rotations in a row with no sign of Glacier 😦

  13. SlimEel94 says:

Every daily challenge complete bar GRUNT SPELUNKING! Tis a little tedious 649 enemies left to go and out of 6 attempts going through ‘none of the above’ I’ve only been lucky enough for 2, yes 2 matches on Glacier! Thanks Bungie. Love the fact that I will still sit through game after game just for the chance of levelling up! One plus for this though was that there has been no separate attempt for any other daily. Just aim for Glacier and the rest easily rack up so decent cR.

    • Sean says:

Coincidentally (or maybe not) I’ve had about the same luck. Though I think I’m at 7 games and Glacier was unavailable for 4. You’d think if the challenge is basically play 9 Firefight games on Glacier, Bungie would increase the odds it comes up for selection. It almost seems like they DECREASED its odds.

    • HoodedSandman says:

Just played through 6 FF Arcades and no Glacier showed up while the ‘None of the above’ was available. Anyway, got all the other challenges, lots of game creds a nice slot at 3000crs so I am happy with this evening anyway.

  14. Matthew Edwards (Amduscias) says:

I was on yesterday, joined Echelon and Snick’s game on Tempest, it was pretty cool. We had a few FF games, one in particular where we seriously MOPPED them up. Like badly. Like 75 to 13.

We also played through Oni Sword Base for the campaign challenge, it was fun! We just took both wraiths and cut a swathe. One of the drivers did drive us all off a cliff though…

    Overall pretty fun. πŸ™‚

Again, if you need a US based PL, I’m your man.

  15. OMGBBQWTFLOL says:

Took 9 games to knock it out in Score Attack playing Gruntpocalypse, Fiesta attack, and 2x Score. First game of fiesta got 21/30 elites. As somebody who never really played much firefight, I was glad the challenges made me play a lot. Starting to get into it.

  16. REvOfEv EcHELoN says:

I believe they are making us play Glacier so much because we have LASO: Package in a few days and that is one of the hardest parts of the level. Although i got a few tricks of my own for that part πŸ˜‰

Thank to all who joined RDC game night last night it was a good time. My party only played for a few hours because I had to go eventually at which point I believe they just jumped into Scruff’s party and continued but we had a great deal of fun. The Custom games on Tempest and Anchor 9 were Awesome and we also did some Squad Slayer where I do believe we won every mach by more than 10 poins, great teamwork everyone!

  17. Volantdreadknux says:

I agree that 1000. Glacier kills is the biggest waste of time ever, sort to those who have it or nearly have it you have no life,
