16th September – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

Today’s challenges are listed below, click Read More for the commentaries and some Anniversary info:

  1. Light Fare – Kill 100 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 1000 cR
  2. No ‘I’ in Team – Earn 8 assists in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2000 cR
  3. Freelancing – Earn at least 20 kills in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2000 cR
  4. Put Your Quarter Up – Complete 10 games in multiplayer Matchmaking – 1500 cR

Commentary, and that Anniversay info, follows after the break…

Light Fare – Kill 100 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 1000 cR

If you want to do this specifically (as you’ll get it just playing for the other challenges) then jump into something on Score Attack, maybe Gruntpocalypse, 2X Score Attack or Fiesta Attack to get it done quickly and rack up the kills.

No ‘I’ in Team – Earn 8 assists in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2000 cR

8 assists in a game might be difficult depending on your game type. Hockey works very very well, stick to gunning people then once you’ve taken their shields out get someone to hammer them. But that of course means you have to play Hockey. Rumble Pit is a good place to do this. If you’re able to team up with someone then Multi-Team is good for it too, as is SWAT if you aim for body shots and your partner goes for the head (hurr hurr). And Grifball can be good if it goes on for long enough. Try actually hitting people with the hammer instead of the ground for damage without a kill.

Freelancing – Earn at least 20 kills in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2000 cR

I know a few people will look at this and think it’s not a problem, but for us mere mortals this can be something of a challenge. If you’re good at Rumble Pit, where the total is 25 to win, you can get this. Other good options are Multi-Team Battle generally, and specifically the objective based games where kill volume is not the target, so you can keep taking guys down without the game ending. Particularly Crazy King and Oddball I’m thinking. Grifball’s also a good one at times, as is Invasion if you’re human and have a good group/defensible position.

Put Your Quarter Up – Complete 10 games in multiplayer Matchmaking – 1500 cR

Complete these games. Don’t drop out. Get to the end of each. Just play through them. Doesn’t matter if you win or lose. Sorry, I can’t drag out this explanation any further. Is there a way of doing this quickly? Grifball can be very quick depending on if someone goes for the score straight away! Halo Ball can be quick, as can Infection, but Infection these days often lasts a while as Humans camp.

So… I got to play Anniversary this morning. See, pics below. What did I play? Beaver Creek. Was it good? Yes it was.

Your host playing Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary

Sorry, you wanted more? Heh, well there’ll be a better write up when I do all my game previews for Pixel Perfect, but in brief, it’s Reach Multiplayer. The pistol is indeed very powerful, and I am still as bad a shot with it as I always was. But when I grabbed my trusty DMR I was a lot more at home, and came 4th of 8 in my first play. At the moment I’m still looking at this as essentially a new map pack, albeit with changes the title update brings to the gameplay experience. I was pleased to see someone making full use of the sniping ramp, and I had a little run through the base with a shotgun, until I ran into someone else doing the same and we killed each other at point blank range! Clearly, the old tactics still work a treat.

Other people, playing Halo Anniversary

I’ll be going back for some more hands on time with the game, and I’ll link to my full preview when it’s online.

I’ve also had some excellent hands on time with Gunstringer, Disney Universe and various bits of gaming equipment being demonstrated. For those who were discussing video capture Roxio are selling their Game Capture tools for £10 off if you go to roxio.co.uk and use the discount code 10offgamecap between now and 25th September, yes I’m very tempted to get one, just for kicks. There’s a lot more for me to play with so I’m getting back to it now.

You at that thing in Birmingham? Yellow’s there today. Hi, Yellow 😀 Did you get to play the Campaign element of CE:A at all?

No chance of me getting any of the dailies done today unfortunately. Busy day, party tonight, etc.

Thanks to everyone for last night’s game night! Numbers were down on usual but we still had an awesome old teabag-fest of a time 😀

    • Sir Galahad 63 says:

This is a very late comment (or very LONG comment), and I will be making another comment on Saturday’s Challenges post to link to here. My sister worked at GameFest yesterday I needed to take her there to work again today. Long journeys and not enough sleep :/

I have just seen Matthew’s epic pictures, and I would have taken more if my phone’s camera had not crapped out; I have an old Win 6.1 Mobile phone -_-
Hopefully my sister will be taking some pics today, so I can post some links up.

When I first got in to GameFest, I went and saw the Aston Martin DB Mark III Pierce Brosnan drove in GoldenEye) or a very nice but real replica). Took a few photos, then my phone died 😦

My first game was Need For Speed: The Run. This is a game I am looking forward too, but will probably get early next year.
Next was Halo CEA, which, BTW, was AWESOME.
Now, I DID, as Matthew, play Beaver Creek. Halo CEA MM is similar to Reach MM, but it is still VERY good, and the weapons, including the pistol, are amazing! I came second in the end, but I was still happy (with a positive K/D spread).
Obviously the first picture shows our Emperor doing his finest, but what has really, REALLY shocked me is Matthew’s second picture. You see, by sheer coincidence, I AM THE FOURTH PERSON IN THE SECOND PICTURE!!!!! (I am short in real life, and I have black hair, wearing a grey casual jacket. My bag is an £8 six-year old FF VII bag with metal Fenrir relief, but you can’t see it well, so just IMAGINE IT THERE ALRITE!?

I think I spoke with you briefly Matthew, but this is one issue of being ANONYMOUS, so sorry if we didn’t have a good chat, and I hope you had a good time at the event.

Afterwards, I started to walk to the Bethesda large walled rectangular stall. Then I saw people holding Drive: San Francisco vinyl’s. After inquiring on where to get one, I ran to the very small Driver podiums, entered a competition to win to go to San Francisco, and then got my hands on the vinyl. Quest complete, I walked (at a brisk pace) back to Bethesda.
Too queues ran the outskirts of the massive walled stands, one for Skyrim, and one for Rage, and I waited in the rage queue (but you could go to any bit inside…stupid British queues…). After waiting 30mins to get inside, I played Rage, and have subsequently cancelled my pre-order of the game (it was not bad, but it is far too similar to both Borderlands and Dead Island).
Then I went to see the second half of the demo reel for Skyrim. Yes, a DEMO REEL o_O. Was NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL WITH THE AWFUL SOUND SYSTEM THEY HAD INSTALLED, AND I HAD ALREADY WATCHED THAT PARTICULAR REEL ONLINE >_<

After that, I just went looking around various other stalls, watching the large queues for MW4 and battlefield; let’s just say that looking at fans and the length of the queue itself (at one point, you needed to wait 3 HOURS JUST TO PLAY O_O), Battlefield 3 seems to be the FPS winner this year 🙂
I looked at the TurtleBeach stall, and though I think that Astro Gaming are better at audio equipment, I picked up an Ear Force DSS 5.1/7.1 Dolby Sound Processor for my 360, to use in conjunction with my NuForce Icon Amp and AKG K 701 headphones (when I am chatting with friends, I'll fall back to stereo and use my JohnBlue JB3 speakers and wireless headset instead).

The Ear Force DSS seems to work (I have had only a little chance to play with it atm), and does make games such as Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Halo: Reach nice to play in 5.1 Dolby Digital; in Reach MM, the sound effects are good, and I can pinpoint a little better where gunshots, footsteps, and waterfalls are, but I don’t think my gaming skills will be effected that much. I also don’t like that you can’t customise the positioning of the virtual speakers, that you can have between three to five cables running to and from the little box, and the worry that the box, though looks decent, does not eschew great quality (this also includes my suspicion of the inner circuitry as well), but against the über expensive and well made Astro gaming ASTRO MixAmp @ £99+ (and the higher tiered and priced variations), the DSS for £60 was not bad. And yes, I DID HAGGLE to reduce it from £70, so yay!
Here are links of the two products:

      http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/audio-processors/ear-force-dss.aspx

      http://www.astrogaming.co.uk/mixamp/mixamp-usb

My food break was going to a cash machine, and being charged £1.75 for withdrawals, then going to buy the stupidly expensive NEC priced food. I bought the nice sounding ‘warm cured pork slices with apple chutney in a ciabatta’. What I got was semi-dried hard bread, cold pork, and not bad chutney. Overall, CRAP.

Next up was Assassin’s Creed Revelations. Here, I met with and spoke at length to two complete strangers (a couple still in University), and we had great fun! Well, we had fun whilst we waited for 40 MINS TO GET INSIDE THE (very nicely done) AC THEMED TENT!!! And what was our reward? Playing MM, which was very similar, but slicker, to AC Brotherhood. *sigh*

After this, I went to play some Sega games, such as Binary Domain and Rise of Nightmares. The first was very cool, and remained me of the greatest 3rd person shooter gameplay that I ever played, Vanquish (though it is NOT a great game overall due to awful story and voice acting, and the odd graphical glitches), so I shall be looking forward to BD.
As for Rise of Nightmares, I BROKE the Kinect (or it did not calibrate to my small size), so I gave up. It looked good though when I watched others play it.

I watched The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword cinematic and gameplay scenes at an extremely large white bubbled walled area, and nearly cried. I want a Nintendo Wii NOW DAMMIT!!! 😥 . The sound system and the massive screens were breathtaking too.

I did get to eventually play GoW 3, but missed out on getting the amazing large cardboard box of the game (supersized version of the game packaging without the Xbox 360 top image), which made me unhappy.
I also enjoyed watching Batman Arkham City, which I think is one of this year’s real contenders at being GOTY (alongside Portal 2, DE:HR, Battlefield 3 and AC Revelations). I CANNOT wait for this game.
Finally, I played against a pro MLG Halo Reach player on a custom MLG gametype-like on Countdown. I came fourth, but I had a positive +2 K/D spread, so I was not a total loser 😛

I did other stuff too, such as watching some fit dancers play Dance Central 2 on a large stage (some were good, some were bad), played some retro games, and spoke to some more strangers, but overall, I had fun.
However, my feet and mind hurt. The freely given out Mountain Dew Energy drink, of which one bottle got me through the day, also nearly gave me a HEART ATTACK (it has about 50g of sugar and massive amount of caffeine). I subsequently CRASHED when I got back home, as did my sister who worked very hard on the day (-.-)ZZZ

So, I now know that going to a Gaming event is NOT good idea on your wallet. I WAS naïve. TOO MANY GOOD GAMES THIS WINTER AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! (@_@)

      ^_^

      • Matthew Vose says:

How bizarre that we played at the same time. I’m glad I didn’t try and boast at coming first (don’t think anyone would have believed me anyway).

You did the right thing going on Friday, today was incredibly busy and difficult to get any hands on time or talk with the people running each area. I was disappointed with the lack of knowledge, the event was very much about hands on, not giving information. I’d have to say though my two games of the event are Sonic Generations and Journey. Oh, and Happy Feet 2 wins for visuals, having the most photorealistic penguins, in motion, I’ve ever seen.

      • TheOneInYellow says:

Yep, that was unusual to say the least, but at least I photo bombed you picture :p

As I told my sister after the show yesterday, the number of people would only be the tip of the iceberg, and she told me that there were about 6 – 8,000 people on Friday; today, there would have been 12 – 15,000. Suffice to say that she had been swarmed O_O

I’m glad I went yesterday, but you are correct, it was just hand’s on with minimal technical info from the developers and/or staff; this was Game after all, who specialise in just wanting to promote themselves and feed on our wallets. The most informative talk I had were about the staff being tired, the new GoW 3 console, and giveaways o_O

I did not play on the Sonic games, but I did play Disney Universe. For me, that was a highlight simply because it was different, fun, intuitive, and just plain relaxing; most AAA games are very morbid, so this was a nice chillout moment for me. I also completely missed out on Happy Feet 2, even though I LOVE the first film (need to watch the second). The hair on Happy Feet when he was on the ship in the winter sea storm in the first film was eye watering awesome, and very photorealistic but not uncanny. I also loved the baby penguins since they were SOOOOO CUUUUUUTTTTTTEEEEE!!!!!!!

I have had a bit more time with my TurtleBeach Ear Force DSS, and I am not 100% convinced that it was the best purchase (more like 75 – 80% happy…). It does give me 5.1 virtual surround sound, and games are fun with it. Its nice to hear the new sound effects (or differently presented effects), such as footsteps/walking/running with more realism, bullet cases hitting the floor in various areas are easier to pinpoint, and I can hear people behind me better. Yet I think I could have lived without it. If I could place those virtual speakers further apart, I would have been happier, but the only way I can do this is to adjust the bass volume on the device, which is not ideal. Compared to my Asus Xonar D2X soundcard on my PC, which is highly adjustable, the device does come short (then again, the DSS is half the price of my soundcard, so not a fair comparison).
Until I get these Reach challenges done and go back to DE:HR (and other games), I won’t be able to formalise my thoughts overall.

  4. HC Sangheili says:

Looking forward to the additional write up.

I suggest a couple of Hopper themed game nights after October 4th. Additional TU and Hopper detail from bs angel: http://halo.xbox.com/en-us/news/headline/the-halo-bulletin-91411-/239029

  5. Scruff 815 says:

Just done some digging; Roxio’s game capture stuff is cheaper still (£58) on Amazon Marketplace – http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B004SB1RVI/ref=olp_tab_new&condition=new&tag=playr2com – though it’s still too expensive for me right now given my current employment situation. If I get a job anytime soon I’ll buy me a capture card as a treat to myself 😀

  6. Sir Galahad 63 says:

I hope you had fun Matthew! CEA looks like, well, the first Halo 🙂 in the Reach title update are they adding the CE pistol, or replacing the Reach pistol?

    • Scruff 815 says:

Adding the CE pistol, but only for certain dedicated playlists / gametypes. Otherwise it would render the DMR pretty pointless.

  7. leroygetz says:

    Jammy git mr vose!

  8. gans42 says:

so…all im going for today is the 100 kills, i cant be bothered to do the others…no time (well maybe one game of grifball for 20 kills

  9. Sir Galahad 63 says:

Has anyone else felt like Reach has been getting less… *satisfying*? It just isn’t seeming as fun as it used too. Maybe it’s just me, but I have found that I have been lacking the need and want to play Reach.

    • SensoryFour34 says:

I feel the same way. There are just too many betrayers and just plain horrible players. The only time I seem to really have fun anymore is on Game Night. I don’t think we’re the only ones. Everyone seems to be playing other games recently.

    • Scruff 815 says:

Yeah, most people seem to feel like that at the moment. But that’s not bad, for over one whole year later. I got sick of Ninja Gaiden 2 during my first play through. 😕

It’s alright though, CE:A is coming out in a couple of months. That’ll invigorate everything. 🙂 And game nights are still super-awesome 😀

    • Krandyt says:

I’m with you, I’ve been finding it far less satisfying latley so I thought I’d take a break from it for a few weeks and dust off some of the other games that have been wanting to complete in the hope that when I go back to it I’ll find it as enjoyable as it was.

    • crazybydefault says:

I’ve been feeling the need to complete ODST on Legendary (I have yet to do it) as my break from Reach. I know what you mean though! I still enjoy it, but not quite as much as I did. Although, after a really good game, I want to keep playing, and it goes back to being just as fun 😛

    • Noobwarrior523 says:

Sorry, coop castle crashers =beast….me and a couple of my non rdc buddies(yes….that’s how I now seperate my friends list, people I know in real life, RDC, and people who have changed their name so I don’t know who the hell they are or what they are doing on My xbox live friends list) are gonna try insane Mode (only reason we beat normal was because my one friend whose beaten the game a dozen times,I just jumped around during the last boss fight)

  10. Project shave says:

My xbox live account was hacked, so whilst I wait for microsoft’s “investigation”, I probably won’t be on for the better part of a month. That hacker should be castrated.

    • Krandyt says:

Wow that’s harsh!!!what happened then? I’ve never heard of a live account bieng hacked before!

  11. aeoliant says:

they should really start making challenges more specific like “earn 8 assists in zombies” and then increase the bonus to like 4k or something… although I’m already having trouble earning 8 assists anyways haha

    • SANTAANAS says:

I know…’Cos and I were talking about mixing up Firefight challenges, like “Perform 20 Assassinations in a FF Matchmaking game” and stuff like that. That’ll be a blast.

  12. ckam87 says:

For 8 assists, the easiest way I found was to just go into snipers and shoot for the body once and then duck and cover while your team finishes them off. Just got the challenge no problem. Hope it helps!

  13. HLG says:

Question: can you revert to save if you are playing co-op campaign with a buddy through live?

  14. 'Cos says:

Thanks for the “tea-bagging” goodness that was the impromptu gamenight. i still had much fun, and thanks to all i played with. Ya’ll keep Reach fun.

Thanks again, SANTAANAS, for the fun last night…and for your advice on the maps.

  15. 'Cos says:

Oh yeah…and remembering game night last night…the 8 assists challenge might be do-able in Boom!Ball. under Action Sack playlist. Grab a Noob-tube and go to town. Should get a few without trying, even. Good luck today. I’ll be on later tonight after a hard day of work, and will be looking for online friends to party up with. If not, i’ll go rogue like i’ve done for years so not a problem.

    • Shane says:

That sounds like a good approach if you can get to pick Boom!Ball (or Hockey as above). I’m going for the ol’ tried and tested “run up, punch their face, run away, hope for the best” tactic in multi-team.

  16. Noobwarrior523 says:

    FIELD MARSHALL!!!!!WOOOO!!! NO MORE GRADES!!!

    • SensoryFour34 says:

Congrats! 😀 Now just don’t pay attention to the bar, and you’ll suddenly be a third of the way through it. Otherwise it’ll seem like it takes forever.

      • Noobwarrior523 says:

Yeah, only time i think I’ll see the bar move is when I finish a weekly now =\
