Commentary follows after the break…

Blastin’ and Relaxin’ – Kill 180 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 2343 cR

If you’re going for just this challenge you’ve got a few choices for doing this really easily and quickly…

  • Forge – make a game with players spawning in one spot and camp it
  • Firefight – Download my Firefight Invincible game type on my File Share, lots of Elites, lots of medals, lots of kills
  • ONI: Sword Base – Use the Target Designator trick (run past everyone at the beginning, grab it, turn around, fire, wait for the killing to stop and restart the checkpoint)
  • Package – There are points where you can get a checkpoint just before a number of Grunts appear in the final battle, so you can gun them down and restart

Bulletproof – Complete 2 rounds in a Firefight Matchmaking game without dying – 2200 cR

Wow 343 really are pulling up some old and rare challenges. And still doubling the credit return, so I love them even more. Pick your best Firefight Arcade/Limited and play it safe. Any enemies carrying heavy weapons – Plasma Launchers and especially Fuel Rod Cannons – or charged up Plasma Pistols should be hit first. The Fuel Rod Cannon is a very effective one hit kill, and if not can kill still mess you up real good! Watch out for suicide Grunts or those throwing Plasma Grenades too. You’ll probably see guys using second controllers and being AFK for this, but just play your own game and you’ll be alright. Firefight Doubles could work, even just playing and being careful.

That Pink Mist – Kill 100 enemies with a Supercombine from the Needler or Needle Rifle in Firefight Matchmaking – 2500 cR

So there are lots of options in the new Score Attack modes. FRG Attack gives you a Needler with unlimited ammo, but that only really works on the Brutes and Elites (and the Skirmishers if you can catch them in the open). In general I still recommend any game where you can pick up a Needle Rifle from a Jackal and put 3 rounds into an unshielded enemy to get the Supercombine. 2x Score Attack or Fiesta Attack would be good because you can get loads of Elites at the end. FFA works well once you get the Mythic skull on, since enemies die less quickly and the Supercombine is more effective.

Blast Radius – Kill 75 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking with Grenades – 2500 cR

Several strategies for you here – Gruntpocalypse on somewhere Corvette and throw grenades at the Grunt spawn rooms (particularly those to the left and right of the ramps opposite your spawn room), then when you get grenades from the Grunts you kill use them when they come into the pinch point corridors. Or play Firefight on Courtyard, run to the left out of the spawn room and from the terrace you can usually get up to 5 or 6 dudes with grenades when they’re dropped off. Or play Nadefight where you get lots of grenades when you spawn. Or play 2X Score Attack and use grenades to bomb the spawn/dropship points when a load of guys are dropped off.

Heh, I just realised that the credit return is close to 10k on these and I now think of that as a low amount. These are really bloody awkward challenges though; supercombines can be difficult on Arcade modes since the Grunts and Jackals die so easily, and 75 kills with grenades will be tricky. If I have time I might go for a couple of them and see what happens, will hopefully at least get the ‘no deaths’ and ‘180 kills’ ones done.

    • Braythor says:

True re the supercombine, but if you get a game with loads of elites and crap teammates (the latter is very often in my experience, but then I am quite awesome) you can get at least 30 of them. Throw in the brutes and you’re halfway there.

The main problem I have with today’s challenges is that it’s so goddamn hot outside, so I’m going to have a bbq and lots of cider. Unemployment does have some advantages, few though they are.

      • Peggy Peggy FTW says:

BBQ and Cider all the way!

      • Krandyt says:

Ahh man a cider would be lovely about now but I’m stuck at work, have one for me Braythor, 

      • Tom Brunansky says:

quote: so I’m going to have a bbq and lots of cider.

i like this post a lot.

      • Shane says:

Unemployment is why my Reach rank got so high. 🙂
        4th quarter 2010, I miss you!

(Try mixing the cider with some beer and blackcurrant – “some people will drink them very quickly and become more intoxicated than if they had been drinking regular beer or cider”

        Good times!)

    • Woody says:

LoL; I thought I was the only one who thought the total credit payput seems low, especially when you compare it to the ones dating back on GOW3 release week. I have to keep telling myself it’s still a little higher than what it used to be.

      • John says:

I thought the payouts were very low given the grenades is a good couple of games of Score Attack and I’ve given up on the supercombine kills as I can’t be bothered. In comparison there was 5,000 earlier for killed a BOB which barely takes a couple of minutes.

And with a slight copy & paste from yesterday…

Impromptu Game Night – join me tonight, Thursday 29th September. 8pm (UK time) til late (with a small break in the middle if you’re me). Various game modes depending on numbers and what people fancy playing and whether people have the DLC – but strictly no Customs; I’ma save that for a future week when a few more of us have finished the maps that we have in creation at the moment.

Tell yer friends. Unless they’re asshats. In which case please don’t tell them.

If you’re one of those lurkers who reads but doesn’t write, you’re still welcome, just add me (GT is my name on here) and come along at 8pm UK time or later.

  3. aeoliant says:

is there any way to get all 4 of these in one game?

    • Scruff 815 says:

FF Doubles would be the only way I can think of – and even then, your buddy will have to know not to kill too many enemies. You get about 330 enemies in one Doubles game – split between 2, that’s 165 each. So you’d have to get more than your partner, without dying, whilst also ensuring that every kill you get is with either a supercombine or a grenade. All within 20 minutes.

So possible – but very, very unlikely.

    • Krandyt says:

You’d have to be pretty damn good!!! The way scruff said would be the way to go but it’s highly unlikely you’d manage it I should imagine, kudos to anyone that could though.

    • André says:

That be a real challenge. Possibly in FF doubles arcade with a friend.

The FF arcade I played with 3 others i got to 30/100 but they also went for that challenge so I wasn’t always getting the kill. and supercombine does not always count.

      • Shane says:

Yep, it’s harder on the first round since the enemies are weaker. Use the needler in the bonus round for loads of easy kills (and hope your teammates don’t just FRG/rocket spam).

  4. André says:

3 quarters to Mythic rank. Hopefully 343i continues these high cR payouts after GoW3 release. Since that’s when it started getting high.

    From 5-6k (before 19september). 10k-17k (19-29september)

    • Scruff 815 says:

It’s nothing to do with Gears, and everything to do with 343i listening to feedback about the challenges. It’s mentioned in yesterday’s Halo update.

      • Marshy 40 says:

Hey Scruff, you wouldn’t happen to have a link to Halo update you mentioned? Thx.

      • André says:

it just seemed like it was intentioned to keep us playing Halo not only GoW, maybe both are correct. I would like to read these 343 updates as well.

      • xXMaster SoulXx says:

MARKETING SETUP! Its all in the plans to keep people playing Halo…They’ll tell you its not because of Gears or whatever but it very much is and also about other things like such as the update as Scruff said! Its huge competition and they just don’t start giving out huge cR payout the day Gears comes out you can’t tell me that wasn’t planned! Im sure 343i listened to Fans feedback and sure they’ll want the Halo community to love them as much as they loved Bungie! Anything to keep Halo on top they will do! Kinda like the Government but in a much smaller scale! But I have no problem with them keeping it alive any way possible…I will love Halo till the day i die 🙂

      • Shane says:

        Here’s the link:
        http://halo.xbox.com/en-us/news/headline/the-halo-bulletin-92811-/260232
343 state they have “been increasing the cR payouts across the board while attempting to make them aptly relevant to their difficulty level. ”

        Other changes @October 4th:

        Beta Matchmaking Playlist added.
        Team Classic Playlist removed.
Premium/DLC Playlists condensed into one list.
Bro Slayer removed from Team Slayer.
        Atom removed from Team Slayer.
Stockpile added back into Team Objective.
Matchmaking updated to allow Co-Op Campaign and Firefight play with no HDD.

      • Scruff 815 says:

The massive credit changes started several days before Gears came out. Also around the same time that Bungie themed ones (i.e. ‘linked up with bungie.net’ and 777 cR reward challenges) disappeared, and ones ending in 343 appeared.

Also, speaking generally, people are either Gears fans OR Halo fans (though of course there are crossovers).

I really, really don’t think it has anything to do with Gears. Not that it matters 😉

      • ZaganZee says:

I like gears COD halo, all of it. I just like games though.

      • John says:

I completely disagree with people being either Halo or Gears fans as I know plenty who are both including myself, I’d be playing a lot more of Gears at the moment but their matchmaking system needs a lot of work as I’m finding it takes a long time to get a game and I thought there’s no dynamic host switching as normally the game dies when the host leaves although it seemed to manage a host switch this evening.

  5. biodrumr says:

Does that mean people with a 4GB HDD can play multiplayer firefight now? That’s awesome. I always felt like bungie screwed over all of those folks who didn’t want to shell out the money for the larger HDD. Now I can get more of my friends on with me. Sweet.

    • Shane says:

That’s the impression I got when I was reading some forum the other day. Hopefully it’ll increase the online population.

  6. Cary says:

So.. How exactly does being AFK on a second controller help u last longer on FF?

    • Cary says:

Like on the second challenge.. Can u just ‘not die’ and let the timer run out by hiding?? I think u would need to plow thru multple waves to make up a full round right?

    • Shane says:

It doesn’t… if me and my ghost have their way :-).

The only reason I can think of is that some covenant will be concentrating on that player rather than everyone else.
