13th October – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

This might be your last commentary at the regular time (11am) for a while, I’m off to California tomorrow so I won’t be getting up at 3am to do them. As I’ve said before your best bet is to look up previous challenges using the search function to look up any advice on them.

Today’s challenges are listed below:

  1. Light Fare – Kill 100 enemis in any game mode in Reach – 3000 cR
  2. Unto The Breach – Kill 1000 enemies on Corvette in Firefight Matchmaking – 6000 cR
  3. A Simple Spree – Earn any spree in Firefight Matchmaking – 2000 cR
  4. Hyper Lethal Vector – Kill 200 enemies with headshots in Firefight Matchmaking – 3000 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Light Fare – Kill 100 enemis in any game mode in Reach – 3000 cR

If you want to do this specifically (as you’ll get close to it just playing for the other challenges) then jump into something on Score Attack, maybe Gruntpocalypse, 2X Score Attack or Fiesta Attack to get it done quickly and rack up the kills.

Unto The Breach – Kill 1000 enemies on Corvette in Firefight Matchmaking – 6000 cR

Either Score Attack or FF Doubles, SA because you get a load of enemies to yourself and can get through them quickly, FFD because you can use Arcadefight to get a load split between two, but it can be laggy and takes a while. As soon as you see something on Corvette, 2x, Gruntpoc, Fiesta, Rocket… etc, go for it, as you can’t guarantee it’ll appear again. This is probably the best map for 1000 kills since it’s so small and easy to camp spawn doors (esp in Rocket variants). If you end up with only a few left then as ever Generator Defense or Crashsite are the way to go.

A Simple Spree – Earn any spree in Firefight Matchmaking – 2000 cR

Sprees cover a lot of options, 5 kills with Shotguns, Sniper Rifle, Plasma Grenade sticks, Swords… and so on. Frankly, 10 kills with anything gets you a spree, so just do that and you’ve got a very easy 1000 credits, so perhaps a quick visit to Crashsite/Generator Defence just to do it in a minute or two.

Hyper Lethal Vector – Kill 200 enemies with headshots in Firefight Matchmaking – 3000 cR

Gruntpocalypse and 2x Score Attack are great ways of doing this, you should be looking to get a lot of headshots in a game, especially if it’s on a simple map where you can line up the Grunts, like Corvette or Courtyard. If you get to a high number rather than doing a whole game again jump in Crashsite or Generator Defense and only defend until you have your total then give up the goal.

California? Gah, I hate you 😦

Well, these are interesting challenges. 1000 kills on Corvette? Are they having a laugh? I’ll go for the other three though. Probably. At least two of them.

Impromptu Game Night tonight! I’m not fully certain what time I’m going to be online, will confirm later, but I will definitely be on at some point for many hours of killing in whatever playlist we have the people for, though I am aiming for TU Beta for a little while at least 😀

Also, how do people feel about a Customs night at some point in the next few weeks? The more advance notice the better, since we’ll need the numbers and all 🙂

    • SamCiphus says:

How about some point AFTER November 16th? (The date of my final exam)

    • Zidane says:

Mathew, we can give un til 12, that’s our final offer or its 3 am starts for you lol 😉

    • Braythor says:

I’ll be on tonight for a decent amount of time – just got yet another job rejection so I’m in the mood for getting smashed and killing things.

      • Scruff 815 says:

Gutted, sorry fella 😦 I know how that feels. I’ve got to go sign on today so I too will be in the mood for killing things! I look forward to you getting drunk and randomly teabagging people 😉

      • Braythor says:

Yeah it sucks. Been 14 months now. Mightn’t be so bad if I hadn’t spent the 4 years prior to that back in education, getting a degree, which is now pretty much completely useless – a £23,000 scrap of paper.

I will find solace later, in a long night of teabagging (see what I did there? I am wasted on the dole:) )

      • Woody says:

Hang in there, Braythor. I know what it’s like. A blessing will come to you.

    • Scruff 815 says:

Confirmed – I will be on from 8pm until about 2am, with the usual small break in the middle 🙂

    • crazybydefault says:

Well, I have an essay I have to write, but I can do that later 😛 As always, I’ll be a little late though (thank you cross-country for taking up the majority of my day)

  2. SamCiphus says:

I am so tempted to take a break from homework and get these credits! Gotta love FF Thursday!

  3. Noobwarrior523 says:

    1000?!?!?no….not doing that……

  4. Fitzy says:

Hmm… I’m so tempted to go for 1000 kills on corvette… This is going to be a fun day of firefight ;D

  5. Scott Abbott says:

The 1000 kills will help a few commendations

  6. Woody says:

Wow… 14,000 total credits!! I’m definitely going for all four challenges. Since I love firefight, killing 1,000 is nothing to me, unless the “halo gods” decide mess with my emotions by not giving me Corvette often.

    • Fitzy says:

It’s inevitable. The chances of getting corvette when there’s a challenge that specifically requires corvette? Pfft.. Good luck ;D

      • Robotperson says:

…Let alone the chances of getting it anywhere between the 5 and 8 times necessary to get this challenge. I predict they’ve changed the odds on it coming up because this is effectively impossible otherwise. Can anyone report back?

      • Fitzy says:

It’s just luck of the draw, to be honest. I’ve been playing some firefight doubles and once or twice it has come up almost straight away, whereas another couple of times we couldn’t find it once and ended up having to play on beachhead or whatever.

I’m pretty sure it’s still as random as always.

      • Woody says:

Usually, if I can’t get the map that I want, I go ahead and accept one of the three options from the final map cycle. Once that game begins, I exit out and try the cycle again. I do this a lot and have never been banned for this, in case your wondering… but this is only if it’s single player firefight.

    • Project shave says:

If you play doubles, you can choose any map.

      • Scruff 815 says:

Not quite. You can veto for a *lot* longer than in Arcade, but you still end up being forced to take whatever the last map of the cycle is.

      • HC Sangheili says:

But…and correct me if I’m wrong, don’t all maps cycle through once? 10 maps, 9 vetoes.

      • Scruff 815 says:

In theory, yes. In pracise, no. I’ve had the same map come up three times in one cycle before.

      • HC Sangheili says:

Ok. That’s applicable for Score Attack yes. But I’m fairly certain, although you have me doubting myself, that in FF Doubles each map cycles through once (albeit randomly) with the selections of 2X, Arcade, Limited.

      • Dogmeat says:

Scruff is correct (as if most of us had any doubt). I’ve experienced the same map in doubles coming up more than once with different gametypes offered. As a result, I didn’t get the specific map I wanted before I was no longer presented with any choices. Then it often sticks me with waterfront. Arrrrgh!!! 😦

    • crazybydefault says:

Knowing my luck, it won’t come up AT ALL.

      • xXMaster SoulXx says:

I usually do Score Attack by myself and I aim for 2X on Corvette…It is hard to come by sometimes…but the thing is if i don’t get it and the last map choice is up i pull up my guide and go to the dashboard then get back into Halo and try it all over again cuz i am NOT EVER playing WATERFRONT or any other stupid map unless there is a challenge to be played! And no you cannot be banned for it!

      • SensoryFour34 says:

Waterfront is probably the worst Firefight map ever!

      • crazybydefault says:

Waterfront makes me want to punch a baby…

        /heartlessness

Anyways, I only got the 100 kills challenge! I have an essay to write 😛 But Game Night was awesome tonight! Thanks to all who showed up!

  7. Sir Galahad 63 says:

Completed 3 challenges with 2 games of gruntpoc. Might go for for the 1000 kills… Maybe…

I have never experienced such frustration and anger until the Masta Challenge. Thanks a lot Scruff. I dislike it. A lot. But I need to finish it!!

Also Scruff, I’m trying to go for the precision weapons campaign commendation. I remember you saying something about moving boxes to line up grunts, can you help with that? What would be even better, do you still have the saved checkpoint…?

    • Fitzy says:

Rally Point Bravo of Nightfall is what I think you’re meaning… You make sure you kill the elite first then kind of whack the boxes to move the grunts into a line, then line up the triple/quad and wait for the checkpoint on the left hand side of the bridge.

The only thing is that it can take quite a while to set it up… :\ It can be worth it though as you get 3 or 4 grunts/precision kills every couple of seconds.

      • Sir Galahad 63 says:

Thanky fitzy also, but Scruff is the real deal when it comes to campaign boosting… 😀

    • Scruff 815 says:

Masta Challenge is awesome, but it’s HORRIBLE until you know what you’re doing. After much, much practise I can usually get through the first four checkpoints without dying. Then it all goes horribly wrong 😕

I don’t still have the checkpoint, but yes I can help! Here’s an informative video I found on Youtube for you! 😀 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvb38Z72ODY

The video says to hold down RT and repeatedly revert, but if you’d rather do it AFK (though it is much slower, you’ll be free to go outside / watch movies / whatever), you need to save/quit/resume (so you don’t revert to a previous checkpoint), sticky tape your RT down and your LS off to the left so you slowly walk off the nearby cliff. This way you can do it over several days as well 🙂

      • Sir Galahad 63 says:

        Thanks scruff, you’re a Legend 🙂 or a Mythic, whatever ;D
It was just the placement that I had no idea upon, and if I couldn’t do it I was hoping you could either film your checkpoint in theatre, or post it on the Internet for me and I would use Modio to, uh, make it “my” checkpoint 🙂

  8. Sean says:

Arcadefight on FF doubles is a good way to get the 1000. It’s not to hard to get 200 – 250 kills per game

    • Shane says:

That’s how I’ll be doing this. The bonus round helps a lot and there’s plenty of opportunity for headshots with only one other player (regardless of their loadout).

  9. Zidane says:

How did ff Thursday come about? Was it from
The off? Why not ff Friday, makes no odds, just wondered.

    • Fitzy says:

I’ve been wondering about that too… It’s a good enough idea, I suppose, it’s just… Well, yeah, how did it come about?

      • Zidane says:

Glad I’m not on my own with this one, Scruff will probably know

      • Sir Galahad 63 says:

        Scruff knows all…

      • Scruff 815 says:

It is this way because God made it so. PRAISE BE.

But yeah, Firefight Friday would make a LOT more sense 😕

I also don’t know why people think I know everything about Halo; I really don’t. I still get confused on FF map names. 😉

      • Fitzy says:

It’s because you be Scruff, the all-knowing well of wisdom. ;D

      • Sir Galahad 63 says:

        ^^^Like 😀

    • TheSletchman says:

For what it’s worth – with the time difference we get new challenges late at night (and have most the day to do them), so Firefight challenges are actually on Friday’s for us. FFFriday for the victory (though 1000 kills looks like it’ll be a pain, I got Corvette all day yesterday while wanting Holdout for Flat Tire, so I bet I’ll get Holdout all day today).

      • SensoryFour34 says:

That’s kinda how it works. Like yesterday I managed to get two Killing Frenzies in one game of Grifball. Where was the challenge when you needed it. When it comes up again, I probably won’t even get a Killing Spree.

  10. Zidane says:

Reach release Tuesday 14rh September, so did we have dailies weeklies from release date?

    • Scruff 815 says:

Yeah, but this site didn’t exist then. I remember that the first Weekly was to complete 9 missions on Heroic.

  11. Sir Galahad 63 says:

Does the needler count as a small arms or automatic weapon? Or both?

    • Fitzy says:

      Automatic.

      • Fitzy says:

Only the magnum and the plasma pistol are small arms weapons.

      • Sir Galahad 63 says:

K thankyou, I’m just trying to think about what the best small arms weapon is for FF. I’m goin to go with the plasma pistol because I love it 🙂 and a few shots on a brute and it’s down in easier variants such as fiesta or 2x

      • Woody says:

I definitely love the plasma pistol for 2x Score Attack. Even at a fast shooting pace, it hardly overheats…. well if you can pace it right. It drops Brutes and Elites fairly quick.

  12. PeteTheCat1 says:

Dailies done!! Now to relax before some game night fun and a whole lotta teabagging!

    • Woody says:

*Fears game night due to volume of bags that were bouncing on his spartan’s face, just from a single game of Infection* lol

  13. Scruff 815 says:

Tip for headshots in FF: Go for Skirmigeddon on your favourite small Score Attack map; the hit-box on the Skirmishers heads are way bigger than everything else, so you can get headshots very, very easily. I played 2 games, got a total of 0 deaths and 240 kills, 238 of which were headshots.

    • Fitzy says:

I’ve never really tried Skirmigeddon. It’s always been pretty obvious what it is, but what are the class lay-outs? The same as Gruntpocalypse, i.e., DMR and magnum with different perks?

Anyway, thanks Scruff. I’ll try that out later.

      • Scruff 815 says:

Correct on the classes. No Armor Lock but you won’t need it since there’s nothing explosive (other than your own grenades). Just use Sprint or Evade, don’t stray too far from the spawn room and you’re set 🙂

  14. Zidane says:

I’m going to use pistol 2250 to onyx, this will help 🙂

  15. LolGTFOplz says:

Idk how i’m going to get to these challenges today. Have a gala in Canada i have to go to, and that should go until about 1-2AM. Only good thing is the ol’ lady is staying the night at her parents house so when i do get home she wont be there to force me to cuddle… so it may remain a possibility, even though i might be drained for the next day. But Reach is > than Sleep. lol

    • Fitzy says:

      Reach > Sleep?

      Amen to that. 😀

    • Dogmeat says:

With a full day of everything else (work, awesome family, eating, and various responsibilities…A.K.A. life), giving up sleep is the ONLY way I have any time to play Reach. Needless to say, I have sacrificed a LOT of sleep! That being said, I now have the body of a 102-year-old man. 😦

      • Paul says:

Under the patio or in a trunk in the attic?

      • Dogmeat says:

Rofl!!! Thanks, Paul! 🙂 After a stressful family crisis last night (although we avoided needing to go to the ER) that kept us up until almost 4 am, I needed a hearty laugh!

Oh…to answer your question…under the patio. I reserve the attic for: money from the stolen bank heists, years of collected evidence to support several conspiracy theories but that would put the lives of my family and loved ones in jeopardy if it ever saw the light of day, and all of grandma’s old hats. 😉

  16. daayv says:

Why oh why don’t they up the chance of a certain map when it has a specific challenge. I have spent more time waiting for Corvette to come up than actually playing.
I have already quit out of 4 games of score attack… sure hope it doesn’t mess up my rep.

  17. daayv says:

How long does a game of Crash Site have to last to get the Jackpot?

    • Scruff 815 says:

      Eh?

      • daayv says:

If a game doesn’t last long enough, you don’t get the jackpot/bonus at the end. Does anyone know how long the game has to last to get the bonus?

      • Scruff 815 says:

Well you’re never going to get a big jackpot from Crashsite. It’s only five waves long maximum, and the enemies never get hard.

Score Attack payouts are drastically lower than payouts for the same game modes in FF Arcade / Limited, you know.

      • daayv says:

Yes, but at least I get to choose the map. 670 kills on corvette so far… gotta walk the dog and finish off challenges before lunch.

      • Scruff 815 says:

Go into Doubles with a friend, if you’ve got someone online or at your house to play. You still get loads of veto’s in the map selection, and around 330 enemies between you per game, plus bigger payouts for completion and jackpot. 🙂

      • ChrisStrawhat says:

If by Jackpot you mean Slot machine cR, it doesn’t matter how long or short the game is, how easy or hard it is, whatever enemies spawn etc. – the slot is totally random,
However! You have to play the whole game till it finishes to get the slot. Quitting = No slot machine, as far as I know?
I’ve actually never quit a game, so I’m not 100% sure, been booted a couple… hundred times though =(

  18. Cory says:

    Another Firefight day! Hooray. /sarcasm

I have never played Firefight Matchmaking and never will – not until they decide people without hard drives should be able to play it. Or…they could make it simply Firefight (not matchmaking) and still count for credit. But what do I know?

    Retarded.

Thanks for your work thought Matt.

    • Scruff 815 says:

      a) Every Thursday is Firefight Thursday.
      b) Hard drive-less Firefight Matchmaking was implemented a couple of weeks ago in the Title Update.

  19. Dragao1010 AKA: Brian says:

“well, it looks like these dailies”
    *puts on sunglasses*
    “are pretty simple”

Random guy: “That wasn’t even cleve…….

    YEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

    • Shane says:

Nah, you want to go with something cheesier. Obsoi-erve:

“well, it looks like these dailies”
      *puts on sunglasses*
      “aren’t very challenging”

      YEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

The last phrase could be done with a patented Kramer teeth-and-smirk laugh.

    • BJ2603 says:

Can someone please explain this? Lol seen it everywhere but don’t know where it’s from?

  20. Mikast says:

    Hello all,

First time posting. I’m Mike Gt: xmikast. I am really excited for halo ce remake! Add me if you want to play. I would rate myself an above average halo player but have been sucking lately… Anyone else experiencing the same phenomenon???

  21. Zidane says:

    Anyone apart from
Me not done the weekly yet?

  22. Daayv says:

Been lurking forever. Started Halo in December… closing in on Legend.
I figure most of the players here are from the UK so I haven’t been adding gamertags and playing with the RDCers. But if there is anyone from “the West” I’d love to find some North American players to Halo with.

  23. BJ2603 says:

Apologies 2 everyone I was partied up with when I went AFK. Received a horrible phone call  had a great time though, will send out friend requests, thanks all.

    • crazybydefault says:

We were wondering what happened 😉 No worries though, it was great playing with you!

      • BJ2603 says:

It was a blast, changed it up from my normal SWAT and grif solo marathons. Never played half the variants we did and even got an achievement. Yay for gamerscore lol

  24. Shamboola says:

What a grind to get these. And had to throw in a semi-religious dance in order to ensure that you get Corvette as a choice.

Did em but it was not so fun. Just keeping it going to get to the 2 mill mark and then a few more for Field Marshall.

    Ugh..

    Shamboola

  25. Eskobar says:

I get disconnected last wave on corvette. 0/100. I hope I can finish these 4 before 12:00.
