22nd October – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

Exciting day yesterday, wandered around Fisherman’s Wharf and ate an awesome burger in a CA surf type place (Wipeout Bar & Grill). Went to Alcatraz which was a surprisingly in depth tour with lots of interesting stuff (certainly compared to the site tours in HI), then drove the City for a bit culminating in… Lombard Street.

So yeah, I’ve now done one of my ambitions (since playing the street in a Tony Hawk game). It was dark, and I had two cars in front of me so I just sat stopped at the top until they were well ahead of me then went for it down the road. About halfway down the tyres started screeching, about two thirds of the way down the person whose car I was driving grabbed the door and asked me to slow down. Which I did. When I had to stop at the end. 😀 I was sorely tempted to loop round and go again but don’t think that would have gone down very well. Still, I thoroughly recommend it.

Afterwards we stopped at a huge wine and beer shop, which I wouldn’t normally comment on except for two things. 1 – they sold Fosters Premium Ale. Yeah, I know, crazy right? Surprisingly tasty too. about 750ml of it was a bit much though. 2 -We also bought a mystery box of beer, obviously odds and ends that they had left from other packs. The two we’ve sampled have been okay, but for that price you’ve gotta be adventurous!

Today is more chilling out, probably some time shopping, maybe hitting up a couple of bars this evening.

Anyway, the challenges today are below, with a great credit return (which I take as an apology for the glitch yesterday):

  1. Light Fare – Kill 100 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 3000 cR
  2. Came From Behind – Perform 2 assassinations in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2200 cR
  3. If It Bleeds… – Find and kill the Gold Ranger class Elite in any Campaign mission on Normal or harder – 5000 cR
  4. Participation Counts – Complete 4 games in multiplayer Matchmaking – 2400 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Light Fare – Kill 100 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 3000 cR

If you want to do this specifically (as you’ll get close to it just playing for the other challenges) then jump into something on Score Attack, maybe Gruntpocalypse, 2X Score Attack or Fiesta Attack to get it done quickly and rack up the kills.

Came From Behind – Perform 2 assassinations in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2200 cR

Not too difficult, easy methods are just to hide around a corner in Sword Base or somewhere and jump guys as they go past. If you’re lucky you’ll find someone who’s AFK and hunt them down during the match.  It’s cheap but knowing spawn points can help you in regular multiplayer games – the rocks in Asylum for instance, or favourite camping positions like the lofts in Cage and Pinnacle or the stairs in Reflection. HaloBall Extreme is great for assassinations since you have a big map you’re running around like crazy people on! Another good tactic is Sniper and DMR game types, since people can’t see their motion trackers when zoomed in you might be able to sneak up on them. Don’t forget that reloading and sprinting make noise so people know you’re there.

If It Bleeds… – Find and kill the Gold Ranger class Elite in any Campaign mission on Normal or harder – 5000 cR

Your best bet is Winter Contingency from Rally Point Alpha. Follow this excellent guide to find the Gold Elite on all levels, or this comment from MJOLNIR Tester previously about finding him quickly on WC. We’ve also had lots of discussion on one particular Gold Ranger in New Alexandria.

Participation Counts – Complete 4 games in multiplayer Matchmaking – 2400 cR

A much better credit return, thanks 343. Complete 4 games. Don’t drop out. Get to the end of each. Just play through them. Doesn’t matter if you win or lose. Sorry, I can’t drag out this explanation any further. Is there a way of doing this quickly? Infection is a very fast game type so you’ll probably get it done in 10 minutes using that, or Grifball if you want to just go after the bomb score.

Easy peasy! And, copypasting from just before on yesterday’s commentar… This – http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=24489165&player=Scruff%20815 – happened earlier. I lol’d.

  3. DCA says:

They don’t even try with the challenges anymore do they?

    • HC Sangheili says:

They? As in the entire community?
They? As in 343i providing cR bonuses?

343i will be bringing custom challenges worth a certain amount of cR based on whatever defined criteria they’ve decided on. After over a year of the game, these challenges and their associated payout is just fine.

Am I the only one who never tries for the assassination challenges? Rarely do I ever even go for the drawn-out animation. I prefer a quick melee so I don’t get yoinked.

On another note, my favorite BOB to kill as of late has been the one on Nightfall. After you assassinate the elite and take out all the grunts, head to the next part and watch for him to run by the forklift in the garage across the way. It’s tough to snipe him, but you can splatter him by destroying the forklift as he runs by it. Just an idea if anyone else is sick of looking for him on Winter Contingiency.

    • Dragao1010 AKA Brian says:

For the assassination challenge, do you have to go through the animation or just tap B for a quicky?

      • HC Sangheili says:

The animation will not show if assassinating on odd surfaces; ramps, rocks, etc. “Normal” surfaces require the extra “hold” of the bumper (or whatever your melee button is) or it is just a beat down, or just a pummel.

It seems like Americans like “our” beer more than we do! Nobody drinks Fosters in Australia!

    • thegoatboy says:

Let me guess, you drink XXXX.

      • SamCiphus says:

Haha! To be honest i’ll drink whatever’s on offer!
        I am Australian after all.

    • Ha, yeah. Fosters is like Stella Artois – it’s popular in the non-native countries thanks to the marketing.

    • BJ2603 says:

Sam, now that Fosters sold out we can finally stop saying ‘our’ beer! We can’t be to blame when the rest of the world finds out how horrible it is lol Matilda Bay Brewery FTW! Clearly best beers getting around.

      • SamCiphus says:

Hooray! I’m Victorian, and our state beer still leaves quite a lot of people dead in the water, but i’d better be patriotic…
        VB FTW!

      • BJ2603 says:

I’m Victorian too haha but I like GOOD beer… No offence lol

      • SamCiphus says:

Haha none taken, i’m no VB fan, just thought i’d do my bit for the state economy!

  6. SamCiphus says:

Just had some good games with Envention, HC Sangheili and 10 Dolla Bagel, and even though i didn’t contribute that much I had fun!

  7. TheSletchman says:

Less then a minutes work for 5000 cR, and it’s even easier then last time to boot? Nice and easy one today, with the exception of the Assassinations (which I never seem to be able to get). Which is good because I’m still like 350 kills short of the weekly.

Also the fosters gave me a chuckle, so cheers for that.

    • Dragao1010 AKA: Brian says:

Yesterday i learned Haloball Extreme is great for assassinations! you if you really tried you could maybe over 15 in one game!

  8. TheSletchman says:

Start a Grifball match (for the 100 kills nice and easy) and my entire team quits within 10 seconds. Other team camps the 4 spawn spots. Great fun…

    • Dragao1010 AKA: Brian says:

just out of curiosity, what was your kills to death?

      • TheSletchman says:

        15 Kills : 34 Deaths

Not terrible, considering. But definitely not my best grifball outing.

Also cheers for the info above about Haloball Extreme for assassinations, I always seem to get the AFK’ers on my team (never the enemy team) so that could be the go next time there’s a challenge up for them.

  9. crazybydefault says:

Finished up my weekly in a few Inavsion games while playing with 8up! I was actually surprised I got the two assassinations. I’m lucky to get one in a game! 😛
