23rd October – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

Yesterday was a mostly lazy day, chilling out in the apartment, then to Forbes Mill Steakhouse for an awesome steak dinner with cocktails.

So today…more relaxing, then heading to Santa Cruz for some sightseeing and beer drinking.

Today’s challenges are:

  1. Shootin’ and Lootin’ – Kill 400 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 4000 cR
  2. Now I have a Machine Gun – Earn 100 kills with automatic weapons in multiplayer Matchmaking – 4500 cR
  3. Flat Tire – Kill 5 enemy vehicles in Firefight Matchmaking – 2000 cR
  4. Close Talking – Earn 20 kills with close quarters combat in multiplayer Matchmaking – 3000 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Shootin’ and Lootin’ – Kill 400 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 4000 cR

Best options for this specifically:

  • Forge – make a game with players spawning in one spot and camp it
  • Firefight – Download my Firefight Invincible game type on my File Share, lots of Elites, lots of medals, lots of kills (plus ‘cheevos if you’ve not done the Firefight ones)
  • ONI: Sword Base – Use the Target Designator trick (run past everyone at the beginning, grab it, turn around, fire, wait for the killing to stop and restart the checkpoint)
  • Package – There are points where you can get a checkpoint just before a number of Grunts appear in the final battle, so you can gun them down and restart

Now I have a Machine Gun – Earn 100 kills with automatic weapons in multiplayer Matchmaking – 4500 cR

Your multiplayer automatic weapons are the Assault Rifle, Needler, Plasma Repeater and Plasma Rifle. I’d recommend Team Slayer in Elite Slayer, so that you can use the Needler to take guys out. Rumble Pit can be really helpful too running around blazing the AR, but it’s tempting to pick up other weapons.

Flat Tire – Kill 5 enemy vehicles in Firefight Matchmaking – 2000 cR

The best options for this are below. Key to point out is you must destroy the vehicle, not the driver first. You’re better off using something explosive (Spartan Laser, Plasma Launcher).

  • Score Attack – On Holdout you get Banshees in the rounds. If you can keep a Grunt alive at the end of a wave for a long time you have a higher chance of getting them to come out again and again. They don’t tend to appear when it’s raining
  • Firefight Doubles – Especially Beachhead, where vehicles are usually dropped at the beginning and end of each round, you can decide who gets to take them out and work on it (plus great for working on assists)

Close Talking – Earn 20 kills with close quarters combat in multiplayer Matchmaking – 3000 cR

Close Quarters Combat is melee, beat down, assassination, Sword, Hammer, Golf Club and Shotgun. It’s actually my normal way of playing to shoot then melee so it should be pretty quick. Jump into Grifball and have some fun bludgeoning the other team to rack up these kills, or Infection with everything bar the pistol. Halo Ball Extreme can be good for this, but for every HBX with a high kill volume you might get plain old HB which has a 0 kill volume.

I’ll do Shootin’ and Lootin’ and Close Talking, but probably won’t do Flat Tire. 100 kills with automatic weapons? Not a chance!

    • ken says:

If you do the shootin and lootin in firefight you could probably get the clat tire as well

    • jay says:

Yeah – not even thinking about the automatic weapon one.

And I almost never see vehicles in firefight, … so probably won’t mess with that one either.

  2. ken says:

100 kills with automatic weapons shouldn’t be too bad if you hop in multi team and just stick to the AR give it a few games and hope for some crazy king you would more than likely get the close talking challenge too

    • Dogmeat says:

Too ensure you come out the victor when using the AR:

      – Try firing first to wear out their shield and health before yours (duh). Stay far enough away that they don’t have a chance to pummel you. Avoid their grenades of desperation!
      – Try to weave unpredictably while firing when they are shooting you as well to increase the chances that their ammo will miss you while you connect.
      – Look for enemies that are already sparring. Multi-team or Rumble Pit is good for this as there will likely be two opponents and not one team member (double-kill opportunity). Try working on the enemy that is facing you first. The other player will have to turn around to take you on, giving you another second or two. If you time it right (like after they both pummel each other once), you can take them both out without needing to reload your clip.
      – Perfect your grenade placements. A well-placed grenade can diminish their shields and health to where you just need to sneeze on them to finish them off! Try tricking them into thinking you are more hurt than you actually are. Run to a spot where you can drop down to a lower level and back up. You can time a grenade to land right when they drop down to give chase. An instant face melting with the AR comes next! Another example is when you see a blip on your radar, but you haven’t alerted them to your knowing they are closing in. Round a corner or enter a doorway and turn around while still moving backwards to give the impression that you are still oblivious. Chuck a grenade right at the corner or doorway (which will help keep it in place) and get ready to finish the job after they run through the blast and shrapnel.
      – Noob combo it up with a plasma overcharge. They will often still be too far away to pummel you and only takes a fraction of a second to drop them.

Using these techniques will help you net at least 10-15 kills in slayer matches and 2-3 times that amount in objective-based gametypes like oddball (since the carrier doesn’t get radar in multi-team) and runs more slowly, koth (clustered enemies), and headhunter (just don’t meander out in the open with all the insane gunfire going on) since many are not very good with the dmr. Happy challenge completing!

  3. Sir Galahad 63 says:

    R.I.P Marco Simoncelli 😦

    • BJ2603 says:

I just read that! It’s been a horror week for motor sport. I didn’t know much of this Marco fella but the general vibe was that he was a real character and will be sorely missed. I feel for his family and friends, but also for the other riders involved in the crash. May he rest in peace.

  4. Deaf Phantom says:

todays challenge is boring i’m not doing 2 of them cause i’ll be busy with my weekly challenge and 400 kills is too easy when i can go to ONI map and bomb them as many times as i want lol

    • jay says:

How many kills is one pass in ONI?

      • Deaf Phantom says:

there is a easy way at the start of the map all you do is run by them not killing any till you get that green gun (target locater) and wait for the checkpoint then you start bombing them and revert to last check point to do it again… that there is about 12 to 20 easy kills and getting 400 in 30 minutes to an hour (depents on the kills) is no problem

hope that helps if nobody knew this before

  5. SamCiphus says:

Well, these challenges are getting ignored, because…i got Batman Arkham City!!!

  6. Zidane says:

Who is betting on complete 24 daily challenges to complete the weekly? 30343cr

    • BJ2603 says:

Seeing as I’m pushing for Field Marshall before CE gets released I like the sounds of that. Still need about 385k cR I think…

  7. AngelicReaver says:

I counted out the games, 3 of invasion (thinking of tier one being all automatic weapons), 5 games of action sack, mostly speed flag while hoping for hockey, and 27 games of Team Slayer. Took me four hours, but I got them all. Phew.

  8. Siaberwocki says:

Did holdout a bunch of times, and out doesn’t seem to be counting all banshee kills. Just completed a round with two kills and no love on the challenge..

    • BJ2603 says:

That’s weird, I went banshee hunting for my ‘grounded’ commendation (destroy an enemy-occupied vehicle) in firefight and it was working fine. 2 sniper shots. It’s what I’ll b doing later to get the daily (as I’m usually not quick enough 2 get the vehicles in FF arcade) hopefully I don’t have similar issues!

  9. Siaberwocki says:

Oh yeah…great website by the way, been playing for a couple months and this place is invaluable…

  10. Cary says:

Got all 5 vehicle kills in Holdout but some sniper kills didn’t count.. prob because I killed the driver first. Rocker launcher works best. Side Note: one of my “enemy vehicle kills” was when a brute maned the turret on the roof of the small building in the middle and fried his ass w the rocket. 🙂

    • Siaberwocki says:

Damn. Didn’t realize you could kill banshee driver. Too many rainy holdouts, I’ll have to pass on this one…

    • AngelicReaver says:

On the subject of the turret, machine gun turrets (not plasma) count as vehicles. Even for kills in your commendations if you’re looking for more vehicle kills. It helps a lot when you’re on a map with no vehicle spawns or drops.

  11. Matt Alston says:

i’ve found the best way to get the flat tire challenges is to do firefight limited on beachhead. yeah sure you have to worry about other people dying too quickly, but what i usually do is grab the first wraith that gets dropped, then drive around camping the 2 wraith drop spots. not only are you able to get the wraiths easily, but you also rack up a lot of kills by bombing/running over the enemy drops

  12. Zidane says:

    Weekly is Alexandria laso

    • aeoliant says:

      nooooooooo not a laso

    • chriscray says:

Another weekly not worth trying. 😦

      • AngelicReaver says:

It’s not too bad. One of the easier LASO missions. Two sections can be waltzed right through via easter egg and the juggling of a few sprint AAs. The hospital section can be hard, but as long as you juggle and stock up your weapons as you go, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

    • T1M3C0NSUM3R says:

None too thrilled about this. I’ll give it a try as always, but I certainly don’t expect to complete it.

      • Zidane says:

Not impressd at all with todays either 😦

      • Zidane says:

Got to be an easier way!

      • SensoryFour34 says:

For those planning on not doing the Weekly, this might change your mind. For those already planning on doing it, it could help.

MythicTyrant posted it not long ago. Personally, it’s the only reason I’m even considering doing the Weekly!

      • prnzhrn says:

SensoryFour34: thank you for that video. i was looking around youtube for some walkthroughs and that one is definitely the best. also, i feel kinda dumb for thinking Blind had to be on. 😡

    • Paul says:

It’s not SLASO so my advice is to do this one with a second player – I just did it with my boy AFK (actually he’s on holiday so I’m doing two sets of challenges this week), left his body on helipad at ONI HQ (doesn’t get shot at much) and trotted through (banshee at hospital, sprint in tower and jetpack at club) – dying is a pain but it only reverts to last save as co-op. Completed (messily, 24 deaths) in just under 90 minutes – we both got the challenge complete.
Other bit of advice is to shoot BOTH wings off the banshee for hospital – makes it much easier! And remember to get out of banshee AS SOON AS THE JETPACKS DESPAWN – leave it too long and you’re locked in.

  13. mista fista says:

They changed the glitch. Now you can’t access the hospital at the beginning of the mission 😦

    • Paul says:

I had hospital first – it varies. Tyrants mythic guide suggests you restart until you get it first.

Just watched the video – I’d always wondered where the switches were! Now I know for next time.

  14. Jetpack333 says:

ugh, did what the video said, got jipped, ahd 2 do 2 more missions then him, took an hour… kept dieing lmao.
