26th October – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

San Jose was really nice, the bookstore that was raved about prior to the trip was as good as expected and yielded the first couple of books in the Fate of the Jedi series (finally). The evening held a LOT of Zombie Fluxx, and some really tasty Chinese from Mandarin Gourmet.

So far today I’ve managed to break a bed and then cook English style pancakes.

Today’s challenges are:

  1. Fire When Ready – Kill 50 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking – 3000 cR
  2. Weapon Swap – Earn 10 Sprees in a Firefight Matchmaking game on Heroic or harder – 2000 cR
  3. The Little Guys – Kill 125 Grunts in Campaign today on Normal or harder – 2000 cR
  4. Freelancing – Earn at least 21 kills in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2100 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Fire When Ready – Kill 50 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking – 3000 cR

As ever, Grifball, and you’ll get this in a game or two. Try and get at least one buddy to hold the bomb whilst you play for kills (and vengeance), or hold the bomb yourself and pick off the other team as they come at you with hammers.

Weapon Swap – Earn 10 Sprees in a Firefight Matchmaking game on Heroic or harder – 2000 cR

Sprees are hard for weapons, especially in Firefight. I reckon Gruntpocalypse or some other easy Score Attack variant, get the 50 kills medal, then die and do another 50. You get 120 kills in Gruntpoc so it’s an easy way to do it. Alternatively use the Shotgun for three, sticky grenades, Swords, Hammers and anything else you can that gives a spree (this list on Halopedia shows all Spree medals available) to top up the killing sprees as well.

The Little Guys – Kill 125 Grunts in Campaign today on Normal or harder – 2000 cR

Winter Contingency, Exodus or The Package are excellent for Grunts.  The opening of ONI Sword Base has one useful trick – go straight to the Target Designator, turn around and blast some Grunts, then reset to checkpoint. It’s a quick way of doing it, although I prefer playing through levels to up various commendations. Ryan suggested something similar on The Package, throwing a grenade just before the checkpoint so that every time you reset it goes off and takes out a few Grunts. ONI: Sword Base can also be good by just taking out the few who are in front of you at the start then restarting the mission, but if you go for the TD you get lots of big commendations too.

Freelancing – Earn at least 21 kills in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2100 cR

I know a few people will look at this and think it’s not a problem, but for us mere mortals this can be something of a challenge. If you’re good at Rumble Pit, where the total is 25 to win, you can get this. Other good options are Multi-Team Battle generally, and specifically the objective based games where kill volume is not the target, so you can keep taking guys down without the game ending. Particularly Crazy King and Oddball I’m thinking. Grifball’s also a good one at times, as is Invasion if you’re human and have a good group/defensible position.

When are you back Mathew? Waiting till this time is killing me! That said sounds like your having a fab time.

  2. Zidane says:

Got killing frenzy in third game of swat tonight! Why not yesterday? Why not equally, I got 24 in swat yesterday by chance and no chance today, sods law!

  3. Scruff 815 says:

I still need to finish off the 50 kills, but the rest are all done and dusted. Woo-hah, etc.

Also almost finished off my Slayer map and made a huge start on my Infection map… Bring on Customs Night in a couple of weeks 😀

    • Zidane says:

Show off, not working on freelancing, it will happen or it won’t, working on credit farming just realised your tip on campaign, heroic without dying! How daft am
      I!!!!!

      • Scruff 815 says:

Freelancing – easy in Rumble Pit, Invasion (2 rounds, no kill limit) or Grifball. But there’s only 12 minutes from when I write this before the challenge changes 😉

I don’t know what you mean about my tip on campaign?

A fast way to do this is Winter Contingency, Rally Point Bravo. Go through the initial battle at the comm relay station, killing whatever Grunts are easy to hit with the DMR until the door closes. Skip the cutscene and you spawn in the dark with Jorge and the metal guitar music. Grab a DMR and shoot off the tops of the gas tanks on the right so all three blow up. That will wipe out most of the Grunts and Jackals. Take out the Elite Zealot. Move up and take out the Grunts and Jackals in the corridor on the right, but don’t enter the corridor yet. When all of the enemies are dead enter the corridor and you’ll get a checkpoint.

Four Grunts will spawn at the corner ahead. Chuck a frag grenade and you should get an Overkill. Reload the checkpoint and you will be in the corridor just before the Grunts spawn. Move forward and four Grunts will spawn at the corner. Chuck another grenade. Reload the checkpoint and repeat. It should take about 7 minutes start to finish.

    • Paul says:

an equally fast way is Nightfall, Rally Point Alpha – skip past the beasts and clear out the Powerhouse, kill all enemies dropped from the first Spirit then leg it to the far end of the bridge when Jun says “More enemies inbound” – you should hit a checkpoint at the end of the bridge (may take a couple of attempts) and immediately find a puddle of 8 Grunts dropped by the second Spirit. At this point I should mention that you are carrying a Rocket Launcher…. bwah ha ha

      • callupchuck says:

I was about to mention this checkpoint. I use it to boost grenade kills and precision weapon kills.

    • thegoatboy says:

The Package, Rally Point Bravo is the best.

Run down from the spawn, then head down the right side. Look to the left and stand under the small scaffolding with the spotlight. Don’t move into the open until the checkpoint pops. Step out and run forward… 8 grunts. Nade, DMR or AR depending on commendations needed.

Make sure you “restart the last checkpoint” as soon as the Doc says “I need more time…” otherwise the next checkpoint will interrupt your grunt killing.

    • Scruff 815 says:

Sword Base is still the quickest (even though it’s pretty dull). Sprint to the target designator, turn around and fire it at the group of enemies, then turn towards the big sealed doors that lead to the Wraith section and run at them. You’ll trigger a checkpoint just before the first TD bombs start dropping. Revert for 30 seconds or so and the challenge is done.

      • Paul says:

for total kills yes, but it seems to have a low Grunt count

      • Scruff 815 says:

Yeah, it’s like 3 or 4 per revert. But if you get the checkpoint right before the bombs hit, it’s really quick to repeatedly revert. Boring, yes, but very speedy 😉

i know this has nothing to do with this post but can someone help me, i want to know everything about game night and the tournaments, i want to know when they are and how i can join then, for example do i need to download the recommended map or not ect. please help me 😀

    • SensoryFour34 says:

You don’t need to have the DLC maps if that’s what you mean, but people will be kinda mad if we try to play Premium Battle and you don’t have them. Just add anyone who posts about Game Night as a friend. There’s one tomorrow at 4:00 EDT. So you can just send a Friend Request to me, Scruff, porotaja, etc.

      • Zidane says:

That’s what has put me off, I’m not getting premium maps yet.

      • thegoatboy says:

I think the maps are still on sale now.

      • Scruff 815 says:

If they are still on sale, get them NOW because they’re not going to last. Though I’m fairly sure they stopped being on sale yesterday.

    • Scruff 815 says:

The tournament finished a while ago, that’s just an old link. And at the moment, there’s no plans for another one.

But yes, it’s Thursday today, so please do come along for game night tonight! 😀

  6. Flacksguy says:

I’ve gotten Weapon Swap very easily on Fiesta Attack, both last week and this evening.

I gave up on the Weekly after a couple of tries…..
…I couldn’t even sneak in and assasinate the sleeping Grunts. They woke up every time. I’m absolutely terrible in that mission. I get ripped apart by Banshees whenever I play through it, and it takes me forever….even with all of the tricks.

    • Scruff 815 says:

Do it in a group. It’s way easier with more people, and if all else fails you can do what Braythor and I did and just chill in a spare Falcon while someone else does all the work for you 😉

    • Paul says:

I think the Grunt assassination only works if the Hospital is the first mssion, and you need to land the Falcon to the side of the building

  7. Scruff 815 says:

    AN IMPORTANT REMINDER:

Tonight (Thursday 27th October) is GAME NIGHT!

Join snickerdoodle from 8pm London time (3pm Eastern, 12 noon Pacific, etc.), and me from 11pm London time, for hours and hours of social gaming fun. There’s no complicated way of joining – friend one of us if you haven’t already, and press X to join us when you see us online in the main menu of Reach! We’ll be playing in whatever playlist people want to play, and all will be well with the world.

There aren’t many rules: try and have a mic, don’t be an ass, and we’ll all get along just dandy 😀

porottaja will be late, because he is watching Santa conduct an orchestra.

Will re-post in the Thursday challenges when they’re posted 🙂

  8. chriscray says:

Wow, I reluctantly played grifball, and did my personal best, got 50 kills in one game! I got my first mp killtrocity, it seemed like I knew what I was doing! I’ve been burnt out on this variant, but seeing the 21 kills in one game forced me back. And the weekly I finally finished! Tyrant is funny, but he makes it look too easy.

    • T1M3C0NSUM3R says:

I know he readily admits it in his guides, but man, is he bad with a DMR. I always feel better about my DMR skills when I watch those videos haha.
