27th October – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

Who reckons having an extra long lie in will help me readjust to UK time in a few days? Yeah, probably not smart, but relaxing so that’s okay. Especially now the bed’s fixed!

Went to Dave and Buster’s yesterday. Very VERY impressed with it, especially because I got significantly further in Jurassic Park: The Lost World than I ever did when it was originally around. It was just so much fun playing random arcade games, not worrying about having lots of £1 coins (you Americans have it easy with $1 bills), and drinking at the same time.

I also got my new Portal 2 coasters delivered, thank you very much ThinkGeek, along with Christmas presents for my nephew (who’s 8 months old). Today is relaxing, shopping and probably La Fondue for dinner. Mmmmm, alligator meat.

Today’s challenges are:

  1. Light Fare – Kill 100 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 3000 cR
  2. Take a Dip – Kill 150 enemies on Waterfront in Firefight Matchmaking – 2500 cR
  3. More Like in Post – Kill 150 enemies on Outpost in Firefight Matchmaking – 2500 cR
  4. Survivor – Earn 5 Sprees in a Firefight Matchmaking game – 2000 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Light Fare – Kill 100 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 3000 cR

If you want to do this specifically (as you’ll get it just playing for the other challenges) then jump into something on Score Attack, maybe Gruntpocalypse, 2X Score Attack or Fiesta Attack to get it done quickly and rack up the kills.

Take a Dip – Kill 150 enemies on Waterfront in Firefight Matchmaking – 2500 cR

We’ve had this challenge once before, in March. Several options, two rounds through anything in Score Attack will see you get this quickly. Or Firefight Doubles in ArcadeFight should get you both somewhere close to the total if not there, or FFA itself although with 4 people you probably won’t get the full kill volume. Beware the Suicide Grunts (there should be a spoof series of pictures based on the Suicide Girls), and the snipers on the cliff. With this and the next challenge I’d just recommend picking whatever you see first on the map required.

More Like in Post – Kill 150 enemies on Outpost in Firefight Matchmaking – 2500 cR

We’ve had this challenge once before too, when it was 1000 kills (although we have had lower volume challenges with difficulty stipulations before). This is also the first time I think we’ve seen two map specific challenges on one day. Interesting. Again, several options here, two rounds through anything in Score Attack will see you get this quickly. Or Firefight Doubles in ArcadeFight should get you both somewhere close to the total if not there, or FFA itself although with 4 people you probably won’t get the full kill volume. Again, with this and the previous challenge I’d just recommend picking whatever you see first on the map required.

Survivor – Earn 5 Sprees in a Firefight Matchmaking game – 2000 cR

You get 120 kills in Gruntpoc so it’s an easy way to do it. If you can get kills using weapons (ie 5 grenade sticks, a shotgun, sniper rifle etc) then you get nearer the total – use Score Attack to get a range of weapons. Beachhead is quite good as you can use the vehicles to get more sprees – and now on Firefight Arcade you’ve got a good chance of using a variety of weapons, lots of killing sprees and grenades and the like. I like hitting up Gruntpoc then getting the 5 killing sprees.

its 4:30pm man! why this late when i might want this info at 8am?

    • Deaf Phantom says:

i’m not going to play halo today, maybe not even tomorrow cause i’m being picked a zombie so many times on living dead and last night was 6 times in a row and i just quit as i knew i was going to be picked again in the next match never getting a chance to be human… they need to fix this or i’m quiting it and trading for something else

      • Dogmeat says:

You solely play Living Dead? There are so many other aspects of the game to be enjoyed! Maybe there is an underlying reason why you would do something so drastic like giving up a night or two of playing or trading in the game?

I don’t play that gametype hardly ever for a few reasons. I am working on certain commendations, for example. However, the main reason is that getting a bulltrue medal doesn’t guarantee you survive your encounter with an opponent’s sword lunge anymore like it did on Halo 3. On top of that, you sometimes get penalized with a longer respawn time for betraying the player you just infected!?!

      • SamCiphus says:

Important points Dogmeat, however you can’t beat Living Dead when you’ve got some mates around and you want a laugh!

      • crazybydefault says:

I play Living Dead whenever I want a good laugh. And to have the crap scared out of me whenever I’m the last man standing o.O

But don’t trade it in; there are so many great things about Reach that far outweigh the cons. 😉

    • Scruff 815 says:

Because Matthew’s on holiday in California and it’s not his job to tell you how to play Halo. You’re lucky he’s posting at all; I sure as hell wouldn’t be if I were in his shoes.

And apparently you didn’t want this info at 8am anyway, since you decided that you’re not playing Halo today anyway and you only play Living Dead and wahhhhhhhh.

      • t-rOY (tROYnHI) says:

ditto what Scruff said, and besides Matthew has mentioned several times, that you can use the search box to look up challenges that were covered before.

@Matthew – hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday, and don’t worry about us. Most of us can figure out how to do these before ‘8am’

It’s a good thing I’ll be skipping out on the challenges (and even playing) today. I can’t stand Waterfront, and to think people will intentionally vote on that map for the daily challenge when it comes up turns my stomach. It’s like convincing people to gnaw off their own limb…twice (unless you do Firefight Doubles, I guess)! 😦

I need to work on vehicle kills, but Outpost doesn’t even have a high “payout”. Ahh…well. Have a great day, everyone! 🙂

    • prnzhrn says:

play Score Attack… one player, one vote, your choice.

      • Dogmeat says:

Your solution seems to suggest that I don’t enjoy FFA or FFD. I’d much rather play those variants than Score Attack for a number of reasons. I enjoy playing Firefight with other people rather than alone. I only have two Firefight commendations left to work on: Perfectionist and Grounded.

Playing Score Attack means all the enemies only come for me all the time, decreasing the odds that I can stay alive for the round. I can survive 3 rounds in FFA in the same amount of time as it takes to complete one round of SA. Additionally, there are more vehicles to destroy than in Score Attack. I often position myself to “snag” them before the other players do. Only during days with a Flat Tyre challenge is it a little trickier to beat teammates to the punch.

On days without a specific map challenge, it is easier to vote on Beachhead, Outpost, etc. that have higher amounts of enemy-occupied vehicles (or at all). I was merely commenting that I personally will avoid the frustration today of other players voting on maps not conducive to my efforts. I also dislike Waterfront like I dislike a red hot poker being jabbed into my eye! 😉

  3. SamCiphus says:

I’ll be hitting these challenges tonight, 7.30pm AEST, and try to do them by 9pm (when they hange over in Aus) and then, i’ll have time to attempt the weekly and play some Batman: Arkham City!

  4. Scruff 815 says:

Easy challenge goodness. Shame about Waterfront (even more of a shame that the last enemy got me with a lucky plasma grenade when I was one kill away from getting my first perfection on Waterfront), but yay for Outpost! Such a great map, and really good in 2xSA for getting perfections and automatic & grenade kills 🙂

    • SamCiphus says:

Grenade kills especially! Hide in that lower room with the ammo crate and grenade them when they come through the door.

      • Paul says:

are you thinking of Holdout? The lower room in Outpost is too exposed…

I tend to use DMR/AR and lurk at the top of the stairs, and drop down to the ammo crate when the next wave restarts then run back up – skirmishers are usually the only problem but if you can pick up a brute gun they are easy to melee

      • SamCiphus says:

Oh yeah oops! I meant Holdout! I follow the exact tacticsyou just described on Outpost

    • Bill Janis says:

I’ve had an easier time with Waterfront perfections than Outpost. Until I learned to use that giant cargo box on top of that middle building on Waterfront. VERY useful!

You probably know this, but there is a spot to hang out on Waterfront that is useful for perfections. When you spawn, you run out of the building towards the back of the map (straight ahead from the ammo box, with the box at your back), turn right down the ramp, then go way over to the left on top of the little hill with the tree. Usually you can see them coming in time, you can pick off the sniper guy up on the mountain, and, bad guys can, and usually do, spawn right where you are standing a time or two per game. have a plasma ready when you hear, “reinforcements,” and while they are figuring out where they are right after they spawn, hit them with a plasma. All 4 dead, every time.

  5. Paul says:

what happened to the bed Matthew?

  6. Glad you’re enjoying your holiday (and I love CA), but I’ll be glad when normal posting is resumed!

I wasn’t wild about having two map specific challenges on the one day, took ages to get a second waterfront game.
