10th November – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

Yes, that is 13k in credits for one challenge. Does that tempt you more than normal for a LASO run? And yep, they’re being good to Silver members by scrapping FF Thursday so that everyone can get the weekly. In theory.

Today challenges are:

  1. Shootin’ and Lootin’ – Kill 400 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 4000 cR
  2. Demon – Kill 30 Elites in Firefight Matchmaking – 2400 cR
  3. Tip of the Spear: LASO – Complete Tip of the Spear, Legendary, All Skulls On (LASO) – 13,000 cR
  4. Take a Dip – Kill 150 enemies on Waterfront in Firefight Matchmaking – 2500 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Shootin’ and Lootin’ – Kill 400 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 4000 cR

Best options for this specifically:

  • Forge – make a game with players spawning in one spot and camp it
  • Firefight – Download my Firefight Invincible game type on my File Share, lots of Elites, lots of medals, lots of kills (plus ‘cheevos if you’ve not done the Firefight ones)
  • ONI: Sword Base – Use the Target Designator trick (run past everyone at the beginning, grab it, turn around, fire, wait for the killing to stop and restart the checkpoint)
  • Package – There are points where you can get a checkpoint just before a number of Grunts appear in the final battle, so you can gun them down and restart

Demon – Kill 30 Elites in Firefight Matchmaking – 2400 cR

A lot of the unusual solo Firefight MM variants give around 25 Elites these days – 2X, Fiesta etc. Firefight Doubles might well be a good way to go here if you pick Arcadefight on a map you both like.

Tip of the Spear: LASO – Complete Tip of the Spear, Legendary, All Skulls On (LASO) – 13,000 cR

Not as many credits as we would get if it was a weekly challenge, but still a good return. As ever with these I’d recommend checking out Tip of the Spear LASO’s weekly challenge page, then Tyrant’s guide to doing it. Both will see you through it well for a tasty little credit bonus.

Take a Dip – Kill 150 enemies on Waterfront in Firefight Matchmaking – 2500 cR

Several options, two rounds through anything in Score Attack will see you get this quickly. Or Firefight Doubles in ArcadeFight should get you both somewhere close to the total if not there, or FFA itself although with 4 people you probably won’t get the full kill volume. Beware the Suicide Grunts (there should be a spoof series of pictures based on the Suicide Girls), and the snipers on the cliff. With this and the next challenge I’d just recommend picking whatever you see first on the map required.

Not a fan of LASO myself, Shootin’ and Lootin’ is better.

    • Dogmeat says:

Have you ever completed each level of the campaign on LASO difficulty? If not and for someone who cannot participate in matchmaking challenges, this might be a new goal for yourself to see if you can do it!

I will probably tackle this one (again) if I have time and snag the gamesave this time for future use. I just am not looking forward to the hunters and their insane amount of health to whittle down from as far away as possible. It seems to take forever! 😉

  2. Scruff 815 says:

Is it wrong that I’m actually quite tempted by the LASO? 😕 If only I wasn’t so pushed for time today…

Oh well, priority today is a couple of games of Score Attack on bloody Waterfront. I *might* try the LASO, but only if I can get a nice little team together. And more importantly, if I can find the time to do it. Since it doesn’t say “without dying”, it’s going to be much easier to do this in a group, what with Iron and all.

The rest of the kills will come naturally through Customs Night tonight.

    Speaking of which…

    • Noobwarrior523 says:

I volunteer myself for the LASO, but I have to do a firefight challenge first for weekly(9/10….ive been lazy) but I’m happy they might become dailies, lets just hope they don’t become every campaign challenge daily.

  3. Scruff 815 says:

    Christmas has come early!

Join me (Scruff 815) and gans42 tonight (Thursday November 10th) from 8pm UK time onwards (which will be 3pm Eastern; see http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html for other places) for an evening of Custom Games. We’ll be playing the best maps and game variants currently out there, along with some home-baked creations from various RDC & Halo Social community members. If you’ve got a map or a game variant to share with the world, this is the time to do it. But please try and have it support 16 people, just in case.

Simply add one or both of us to your friends list, fire up Reach and hit X to join us. With no customs matchmaking search tools, we are entirely limited to the people who show up. No people = no game night. Try and have a mic if possible, don’t go AFK, and don’t rage-quit in the middle of a game when you’re doing badly / you don’t like the game mode and we’ll all get along just fine 😀

PS: Thursday November 17th, one week tonight = CE:A Game Night 😀

  4. Quillian86 says:

I’ll be at work for the next several hours, but I should be home all evening; anyone want to do the LASO thing with me then? GT: Quillian86

  5. SamCiphus says:

13,000 cR!!!? I’d be tempted if Skyrim wasn’t coming out tomorrow. It broke it’s street date today (10th) which seems to be all the rage these days!
Congratulations to HC Sangheili who i noticed made Inheritor yesterday evening!
Also, good luck to anyone still going on the weekly challenge!
And finally, a question: is anyone here an avid Elder Scrolls fan like myself?

    • gans42 says:

What difference does it make if Skyrim is coming out tomorrow? It’s a daily challenge, so you would have to do it today anyways.

      • SamCiphus says:

In Australia, the challenges change over to FF Thursday at 10pm on Thursday night. I’m getting Skyrim Friday morning (this morning!) so do you see where the conflict arises?

    • chriscray says:

Elder Scrolls fanatic, yep, that’d be me!

  6. Dogmeat says:

Today certainly poses a double risk for losing credits earned by completing daily challenges AND simultaneously satisfying the weekly challenge. If you only have one daily challenge to go for the weekly, don’t attempt the LASO first! You will not receive 5,233 earned credits after going through that whole ordeal! 😦

Though less likely, you might find yourself in a position where you complete the other three daily challenges in a single firefight match. Granted, it would probably be after you kill some covenant (including a handful of elites) on a map other than waterfront first. Nevertheless, please take care not to do so if you have 3 or less daily challenges to complete that satisfies the weekly challenge requirement. You will not receive 1,133 earned credits from your efficiency and awesomeness.

Have a great day, everyone!! 🙂

    • Hruntio says:

I’m not sure I understand what you mean here. If you are referring to the daily credit limit, isn’t that 120k cR per day? Today’s LASO plus the weekly would only net you 38k (plus a trivial amount for the campaign play). You seem to be implying a credit limit per game, but I’ve never heard of such a thing.

In the interest of not losing credits today, could you please elaborate?

      • Scruff 815 says:

There is an upper limit on the amount of credits that can be rewarded in the “challenge bonus” section of the post-game stats. That limit is 32,767. What this means is that 32,767 is the maximum amount of credits that can be earned *from challenges* in one game, even if the challenges you complete are worth more than that.

If you complete the LASO, then do a different, lower scoring challenge to finish off the Weekly, you’ll get all your credits.
If you complete the LASO and that is the last challenge you needed for the Weekly, you will only earn 32,767 of the 38,000 you should earn because that’s the most you can earn from challenges in one game.
If you earn 32,000 in challenge credits but score a 3,000 on the slot machine, you would still get the slot machine credits as well, because they’re in a different bonus section.

Hope that clears things up for you 🙂

      • Hruntio says:

Ah, I see. Thanks for the explanation. I had never heard of this particular limit before, has it ever been officially declared, or merely empirically observed?

I assume the limit applies to the other cR types in the post-game as well, it’s just a lot less likely to show up there. An odd limitation – seems like a case of premature optimization on the programmers’ part – 32,767 being the upper limit for an unsigned 16-bit integer. So they saved a couple of bytes at the price of imposing an arbitrary limit in the game…

      • Hruntio says:

That would be a *signed* 16-bit integer, actually… off by a bit. And actually, makes the situation that much more egregious, since without even sacrificing any memory the limit could have been doubled. Unless Bungie had planned to allow for negative challenge cR…

      • LolGTFOplz says:

I have not seen it officially declared anywhere. As for empirical observations, i’m not sure the exact date (Dogmeat is the numbers/date guy here), but Matthew set a challenge of getting all of the daily challenges in one game. Individuals who succeed at this, then posted the picture of it. Some of them also met the requirements for finishing the weekly, and the number “32,767” was prevalent in all of those who finished all of the daily challenges as well as the weekly. The actual amount of credits they should have received was more than the “32,767”.

      • Dogmeat says:

Your explanation was perfect IMHO, Scruff! 🙂

Same to you, Lolgtfoplz! The date was 9/22.

Hruntio, I was going to correct your statement about the signed upper limit of a 16-bit integer being 32,767. Unsigned would have an upper limit of 65,535. But you beat me to it! 🙂 You also had the same thought I did about negative credit challenges.

Being that it is a signed placeholder, I can’t help but entertain ideas of what kinds of daily/weekly challenges would result in negative credits being “awarded”. Here are a few that came to mind…

        – Rage quit from 3 games in a 10-minute timeframe: -1000cr
        – Betray 250 teammates in grifball: -2500cr
        – Idle boost 10 firefight matches today: -7777cr
        – Simultaneously carry two power/heavy weapons for over 60% of the time in a single, team-oriented, multiplayer matchmaking game: -3800cr
        – Earn more than 35 kills in a KOTH match but spend less than 10 seconds inside the hill: -4000 cr
        – Play at least 20 BTB games this week with over 75% of your kills using the banshee: -25000cr
        – Use the “Save and Quit” method over 25 times to complete a single LASO campaign level: -15000cr

        Any others?

  7. LolGTFOplz says:

Congrats to HC Sangheili on inheritor! very well deserved!

3/4 challenges will be completed today. i am not a laso fan and never will be. Best of luck to those who attempt it though!

  8. SensoryFour34 says:

It looks like Matthew has learned that Tyrant’s Mythic Guide isn’t best. He’s actually learned to look to see if he has a LASO Guide for the mission. 😉 This mission really isn’t too hard if you follow the guide, but it’s still really tedious. 😦

  9. AmadeusMop says:

Really, all you need to do is play 2X or Fiesta twice on Waterfront. Three times, if you’re going for Shootin’ and Lootin’.

    • biodrumr says:

That’s stretching it to get 400 enemies in 3 games of score attack. Most likely you’ll have to jump into a crashsite after to finish it up.

  10. My Little Housing Blog says:

I see many of you are Skyrim fans. Well, I wonder if you are like my cousin, he will not sleep the entire night when the game is available here in Finland. He took the whole Friday off from work to get prepared for the game. I think I stay with my Halo campaigns for some more time 🙂

    • SamCiphus says:

Yep, fair chance that’ll be me tonight!

      • My Little Housing Blog says:

Ah, so you are just like him. I think I will visit him on Saturday to get a look at the game. Oblivion was not bad, hoping this one will be a whole lot better. It is one of the most important new launch games this year.

  11. Quillian86 says:

Well, I’m back home & ready to go; who wants to do LASO?

    • My Little Housing Blog says:

For us average gamers LASO is too difficult. Should be some more easy challenges. Looks like I will not get the weekly challenge this week 😦

      • ChrisStrawhat says:

Hey it’s only Thursday. Lots a (for the most part ridiculously easy) dailies to do.
You can get it man 😀

      • Dogmeat says:

Chris, MLHB can only do the campaign challenges due to having a silver account but also enjoys the campaign immensely.

MLHB, you should still have 7 daily challenges met so far this week by my count not including the LASO challenge. Since BS Angel said there would be one campaign challenge every day this week, that still leaves ast least 3 more. The x enemies in any game mode would also help. I don’t think you have anything to worry about just yet!

  12. chriscray says:

Lameness. My connection is good, but the bungie network is ailing. I lost a game, finished it, and demon, but didn’t count. That was 20 minutes well wasted.

  13. Will Cline says:

I’ve been having connection issues in the evening these past two nights… anyone know anything?

    • crazybydefault says:

You’re not the only one. I think they might be messing with the servers, but so far no word on what’s happening :S

  14. Well i FINALLY finished the weekly today. I did the LASO challenge and the other 2 challenges, (all but the terrible Waterfront challenge!) I just couldnt handle 2 games of 2X Score Attack on that map! LoL. I did rent MW3 tonight from Redbox so i will be playing it all weekend more than likely. You cant beat renting a game for 2 bucks a day! Have a great day everyone. 🙂

  15. jay says:

Tip o Spear LASO – LOLOLOL I couldn’t even get the opening part to get to the area to shoot the turret cannons or whatever. Basically, I could not get one kill. Died 5 or 6 times at least just falling off the edge. Gave up.
