20th November – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

The thing I enjoy most in Halo CE is the ending. Look away now if you’ve never finished, although I won’t indulge in massive spoilers. So many games, the excellent Half Life and Halo 2 included, feel the need to throw in some epic boss fight at the end of the game. Halo ignores doing that, which is another reason it was so well received, and gives you an end sequence that is difficult at times (both the engine room and the drive), but fits so well with the story and everything you’ve tried to do in the game.

And that drive is so much fun too. I’ve done it a couple of dozen times I’m sure, and I still enjoy it. I’m looking forward to racing it on Legendary to try and get the 25 achievement.

Speaking of achievements, I’m generally enjoying going after them – the Silent Cartographer ones have been especially interesting (storm the beach without losing a marine and escape the map room without firing your weapon). But Halo’s (the level) How Pedestrian achievement was pretty boring, making you walk one of the longest levels in the game. The whole point seemed to be to teach you to grenade jump the gap, so I wouldn’t have minded if the achievement was just ‘get through the unnatural formation on foot’. Oh well, tis done at least.

I suck at grenade jumps though, so I’m going to struggle with a lot of these skulls for sure!

Today’s challenges are:

  1. Blastin’ and Relaxin’ – Kill 180 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 2343 cR
  2. Un, Deux, Trois – Win 3 games in multiplayer Matchmaking – 2900 cR
  3. Blast Radius – Kill 75 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking with grenades – 2500 cR
  4. Roast ’em, Toast ’em – Kill 35 enemies while jet-packing in Exodus on Normal – 3000 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Blastin’ and Relaxin’ – Kill 180 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 2343 cR

If you do a score attack game in something like 2x Score Attack or Gruntpocalypse, then the challenges below you’ll be very close to the 180 total. Other options are another score attack game, maybe Generator Defense or Crashsite for the final few, or a couple more games in multiplayer.

Un, Deux, Trois – Win 3 games in multiplayer Matchmaking – 2900 cR

If you play a Team Slayer/SWAT/Grifball/Snipers/Action Sack etc you’ll get this easier, since only two teams gives you a higher chance of winning than the 6 person multi team (for instance). Make sure you read this Weekly Challenge commentary for more hints on doing it quick.

Blast Radius – Kill 75 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking with grenades – 2500 cR

Several strategies for you here – Gruntpocalypse on somewhere Corvette and throw grenades at the Grunt spawn rooms (particularly those to the left and right of the ramps opposite your spawn room), then when you get grenades from the Grunts you kill use them when they come into the pinch point corridors. Or play Firefight on Courtyard, run to the left out of the spawn room and from the terrace you can usually get up to 5 or 6 dudes with grenades when they’re dropped off. Or play Nadefight where you get lots of grenades when you spawn. Or play 2X Score Attack and use grenades to bomb the spawn/dropship points when a load of guys are dropped off.

Roast ’em, Toast ’em – Kill 35 enemies while jet-packing in Exodus on Normal – 3000 cR

Go to Rally Point Alpha of Exodus where you’re given a jet-pack and hop over to the platform. You need to make sure you’re actively firing the jet-pack when you get the kill otherwise it doesn’t count. 10 should be pretty easy, you can snipe the Grunts and Jackals before actually making it to the platform so getting a few that way. There was a good suggestion from Turbo previously – pick up a Gravity Hammer from the Brute who runs at you, then hit fire and equipment at the same time when hitting someone.

Not a fan of Roast ‘em, Toast ‘em, but I did two challenges and got some good points. Played about 300 campaign missions now and still not tired of this game.

It’s pretty easy if you get a check point before the weapons rack right after you jet-pack to the top level of the tall room (a.k.a. the room where the marine shouts “other side, other side! Entrance is on the other side!”). Next to the rack there’s a case on the ground that has a rocket launcher. Pick that up, unload on the set of jackals & grunts just outside the room and revert to last save until the challenge is complete.

Even easier if you grab the rocket launcher off the marine at the start of rally point alpha – he’s the one next to the ammo crate firing at banshees. You can jet pack towards the low paltform and stairs with grunts/jackals and get the kills using resets without even needing to make it to the far side of the chasm. 5 mins for this one.

Thank you for that, I did not know this before. I will give it a try next time.

Dear Nancy and other people who think that they’re getting robbed of credits “time and time again” – you are not.

Certain challenges (particularly “complete/win [x] games in multiplayer matchmaking”, “upload a video to your file share” and “link up with bungie.net”) give you the credits in-between games, rather than in the middle of a game. As a result of this, the credits are never shown in the post-game credit report. You are, however, getting them. If you don’t believe me, write down the amount of credits you have. Then complete one of the challenges in question. Then look at the amount of credits you now have.

Look at that, you’ve been getting your credits all along! And you didn’t have to come on the internet and grouch at people who were helping you after all!

  3. Scruff 815 says:

Anyway… Not bad challenges today. If I get any time to do ’em I’ll set up some customs to complement them and rake in the credits. When you’re over a million cR away from your next rank, every bonus challenge counts!

Also, Blast Radius is best done in FF Arcade with a group of at least 3 people (so you can control the voting) – go into Nadefight and lob grenades at the enemy spawn points. You’ll have to die a lot because you can’t pick grenades up, so it won’t help towards your Perfection medal count – but it will help to get you the challenge done in one game.

Soooooo sick of campain challenges lol

    • But they are the easy ones (well, easier than all of the grinding ones!)
      🙂

My campaign & armory got reset again, very annoying. I might have to load up a backup save and restart mission to get the jetpack challenge. Otherwise I’d have to do all the campaign missions from scratch.

Matt, if u ever need help on the achievements MSG me. O n sry 2 hear about ur uncle r.i.p

  6. SensoryFour34 says:

Well, I just found out that we need to get a new modem for our Internet. The only way we can even do anything is if we plug the computer directly into the modem. That means that I’m only gonna be able to play offline until we get another one. 😦 At least I’ve got Anniversary to keep me busy until then.

Also, I’m not not any good at grenade jumps either. How Pedestrian, I got lucky and made it the second or third try. I won’t spoil it for people who don’t know where it is, but the Bandanna Skull involves a grenade jump that seems nearly impossible. I’ve gotten pretty close a few times, but I still haven’t gotten it.
