21st November – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

Thanks for all the kind words everyone (especially you Facebook people). Today went very well, although it was incredibly emotional for all concerned. I managed to speak about my uncle to those gathered, and those who knew him are better for having done so.

I got home earlier than expected but was so drained so I’ve been doing Legendary achievements on Anniversary. I got the Bandana skull, if you’re doing it via grenade jump I’d recommend using Plasma grenades so that they don’t bounce, and putting the grenade a little way from the wall you’re jumping next to so you don’t catch it and get put off course. And make sure you crouch so you make it when you’re approaching the ledge.

It’s definitely worth it and I recommend spending the time to get that skull ASAP. Once you have it everything else is much easier. That achievement about not picking up any other weapons than those you start with (Plasma Pistol and Shotgun) in Legendary? Easy when you’ve got infinite ammo and grenades, I’ll tell you. The other two I tend to have one when I play, depending on the map, are Boom (explosions are doubled) and Grunt Funeral Party (Grunts explode like a grenade when they die). It means in any group you take out one Grunt and the rest fall. Very useful.

I managed to do the Maw Warthog run with 1 minute remaining in Legendary just now. The fact that there was only about 1 minute and 1 second still counts! 🙂 I’ve only got a handful left now, those that I’m not looking forward to are Two Betrayals Legendary without killing any Grunts; The Library Heroic without dying; and any level Heroic without losing any health. I can’t play the game in Easy without losing health (I tend to run in shooting) so that’ll be very tricky. Perhaps when I start on it in co-op I can convince whomever I’m playing with to let me get that achievement when we do it.

Anyway, today’s challenges are:

  1. Light Fare – Kill 100 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 3000 cR
  2. More than a Handful – Kill 77 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking – 3500 cR
  3. Killagruntjaro! – Earn 7 multikills in a Firefight Matchmaking game – 2000 cR
  4. Be Vigilant – Score 80,000 points in any Campaign mission without dying – 3000 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Light Fare – Kill 100 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 3000 cR

If you want to do this specifically (as you’ll get it just playing for the other challenges) then jump into something on Score Attack, maybe Gruntpocalypse, 2X Score Attack or Fiesta Attack to get it done quickly and rack up the kills.

More than a Handful – Kill 77 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking – 3500 cR

Multi Team Battle or Grifball are the best ways to get lots and lots of kills, you tend to get more than any other modes. If you play Crazy King or Oddball you can get even more as some people who would shoot you go for the objective, and you can take them out. If you can make an area in an Infection game defensible as a human you can rack up kills quickly.

Killagruntjaro! – Earn 7 multikills in a Firefight Matchmaking game – 2000 cR

In Gruntpocalypse or 2x Score Attack this is so easy. The Grunts come out of the doors/dropships/appear in groups of 4 or 5, and you can easily shoot 3 or 4 of them straight away. Multikills do stack so an Overkill counts as 3 – double, triple and 4 kills. Therefore just play the game and take them out when you see them together.

Be Vigilant – Score 80,000 points in any Campaign mission without dying – 3000 cR

This is a new challenge. Wait, what? It’s been a while since we had a genuinely new challenge, not just a difficulty variation. To up the points you get the two steps are to turn on as many skulls as you’re comfortable with and play in a higher difficulty setting. This is up to you, of course putting on skulls makes death more likely so it’s a fine line depending on your ability. The best places to score points in Campaign missions are Rally Point Alpha in Long Night of Solace, New Alexadnria, or Rally Point Bravo in Pillar Of Autumn. In LNOS you get massive points for taking out Banshees and Seraphs. In New Alexandria the same goes except Wraiths get you lots of points too. In PoA at the very end of the mission you jump in the cannon and start taking potshots at Phantoms that try and shoot you down. These are worth big points, but getting there through the Firefight and the double-hard Elites can be a painful thing. New Alexandria is likely easiest just be careful of your Falcon so you doesn’t explode around you!

About the achievement for keeping the same weapons throughout Two Betrayals, I would like to point out that it really isn’t a hassle, since the plasma pistol and shotgun rip it up. Sentinels gettin 2-shot up in here!
