25th November – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

Only 1 month till Christmas! I like to hold off the Christmas music until December 1st, but then it’s Twisted Sister, Bowling For Soup and a range of awesome songs to get me in the mood, from Kermit’s ‘One More Sleep Till Christmas’ to Fall Out Boy’s ‘What’s This?’.

And Chris Rea’s ‘Driving Home For Christmas’, one of my favourites. In fact I probably have enough tracks on my Christmas CD to do you one per day during December. Sounds like a plan to me!

Anniversary update – Legendary is full steam ahead. Despite a huge number of problems with Truth and Reconciliation (that hanger particularly, oh and Keyes wandering over to dead Grunts as they explode) I’m cracking on with it. Silent Cartographer next, which shouldn’t be too bad, pretty easy to use grenades ad infinitum. 🙂

Today’s challenges are:

  1. More than a Handful – Kill 125 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking – 2500 cR
  2. Neuroscience – Kill 10 enemies with headshots in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2400 cR
  3. T-Hug It Out – Kill 6 enemies with close quarters combat in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2400 cR
  4. A Solid Outing – Earn at least 15 kills in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 1500 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

More than a Handful – Kill 125 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking – 2500 cR

Multi Team Battle or Grifball are the best ways to get lots and lots of kills, you tend to get more than any other modes. If you play Crazy King or Oddball you can get even more as some people who would shoot you go for the objective, and you can take them out. If you can make an area in an Infection game defensible as a human you can rack up kills quickly.

Neuroscience – Kill 10 enemies with headshots in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2400 cR

Play on Team SWAT for this, where about 97.7% of kills should be headshots with one shot. Don’t forget if you shoot someone in the body you can still shoot them in the head for the headshot. Keep your reticule at head height as well.

T-Hug It Out – Kill 6 enemies with close quarters combat in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2400 cR

Close Quarters is a kill using melee, assassination, Shotgun, Energy Sword, Hammer and Golf Club. Infection can be useful, as that’s all CQC. If only there was a game type where you only used hammers and swords though? I say Grifball, as that’s all CQC as well, and easy to get lots and lots of kills. For other mode options, Action Sack’s Halo Ball Extreme is great, and Infection is almost all CQC bar the Pistol. Maps like Sword Base, Countdown and Reflection give you the Sword, Powerhouse sometimes the Hammer and Asylum the Shotgun. I tend to melee a lot anyway so this should come in one game.

A Solid Outing – Earn at least 15 kills in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 1500 cR

Best ways to get lots of kills in one game:

  • Multi Team Battle – Particularly the variants of Oddball or Crazy King as you can take out people going for the objective, but normal Slayer works well in this mode as well
  • Invasion – Depends on your skill level, but the games are long so it’s quite possible to get a lot of kills
  • Rumble Pit – Most variants help with this, bar Headhunter. Whilst the target is often only 25 you’ll find several players always getting close to the target in a game.
  • Grifball – If you get your timing right this is so easy in any Grifball game where someone grabs the bomb but doesn’t score. I’m hopeful this counts all 3 rounds as one game, so it’s even easier.
  • Team Slayer/SWAT – Again depends on your skill level, and that of your team, but it’s definitely possible to get 15 in a game without too much stress

A Solid Outing: yes, all the rounds count as one game. With some luck, you can get five rounds, e.g. with a 3-2 score.

I feel your pain, Matthew; that hanger was a bitch! It didn’t take me half as long as Assault (on the control room) on legendary though. Those 2 parallel bridges…. grar! I think the rest of the game is pretty much smooth going after that. Even without skulls. I’d never tried the game on legendary before, but I found it to be very rewarding. Enjoy!

  3. John Myers says:

Once you find the bandana skull on The Silent Cartographer, even the daunting task of Legendary becomes considerably easier. Not only does it give you unlimited ammo, but also unlimited grenades.

Just finished Library and Two Betrayals on Legendary, got Speed Reader in the process without even trying. Betrayals however was more pain in the ass cause I tried for No grunts and Don’t pick up any weapons… I gave up on the grunt thing in the first room. There was just no way around those bastards without killing them =P Gonna have another go at just that one.
The weapons one was annoying cause I kept getting harassed by Banshees with only a stupid plasma pistol to defend myself with.
Anyway really loving the game! So much fun and nostalgia, remember playing it way back on the PC. We bought our first xbox like 10 months ago, been playing on Live for maybe 4 months, I’m a total noob at everything on console =P

    • G says:

For the banshees, if you can get em close to you, 3/4 shots with shotgun should take care of them, no problem! Just be careful if you have the boom skull on…

  5. Robotperson says:

I had an absolutely torrid time in the hanger too – all evening on Thursday and I’ve just beaten it now. Big tip: don’t swap out your sniper rifle before the checkpoint before the hangar: the door is 1-way. So I beat the hangar with no sniper, no skulls and only two health bars going in.

I’ve got a horrible feeling I’m going to have to do it all again with the rifle if I want to get the achievement though…

    • I don’t know if you can get it with Bandana on, but if so, you’re guaranteed to get it 😛 As long as you don’t swap out your sniper rifle of course…

      • ChrisStrawhat says:

ALL Achievements can be gotten with any skull on (but Bandana and Funeral are the only ones really helping lol). I can guarantee that, though I still have some 8 achievements left in the game.

      • ChrisStrawhat says:

I like to play with Malfunction on lol, it’s one of the funnier skulls. Really annoying sometimes though like when I did Library legendary and you can’t see your shield or health bars =P
