13th December – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

Christmas song of the day is Twisted Sister performing ‘Come All Ye Faithful’. More songs you can sing loudly in a group when merry. And enjoy one of the best Youtube videos I’ve put so far this month!!

The challenges today are:

  1. One Spartan Army – Kill 250 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking – 3500 cR
  2. One Game, One Spawn – Complete a Firefight Matchmaking game without dying – 2000 cR
  3. Nature vs. Nurture – Kill 15 Moa in Winter Contingency on Normal or harder – 4000 cR
  4. Killing Spree – Earn a Killing Spree in multiplayer Matchmaking – 2000 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

One Spartan Army – Kill 250 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking – 3500 cR

You get 120 Grunts in Gruntpocalypse, about 100 enemies in Score Attack, 120-135 in 2X SA, and something like 330 in a Firefight Matchmaking game (although split between up to 4 people). If you need to ‘top up’ your FF kills, jump into a game of Generator Defense or Crashsite and once you have your kills give up the defense. I reckon that two 2x Score Attacks should just about get you this (and the other challenges).

One Game, One Spawn – Complete a Firefight Matchmaking game without dying – 2000 cR

As ever this is easiest in Gruntpoc or 2X Score Attack. The best strategies to make sure you stay alive are to use Sprint, letting you get to take out 30-50% of the wave before they get close enough to be a threat. Key things to be aware of are enemies with Plasma Launchers and Fuel Rod Guns, who will fire from further away; Grunts overcharging their Plasma Pistols; and guys throwing grenades as they get close. Take out anyone you see with a heavy or charged weapon first. If you see an enemy with a Plasma Grenade, shoot it and they’ll often drop it. If you hear one thrown or something fired then get out of there quickly. Always better to pull back to a different part of the map than make a brave stand. Don’t be a hero and dive in, you get plenty of time to take them all out.

Nature vs. Nurture – Kill 15 Moa in Winter Contingency on Normal or harder – 4000 cR

The Moa are scattered through the first two sections of Winter Contingency, one melee and they drop like a bag of stones. Last time we had this challenge we found you can even do it in Nightfall, go to Rally Point Alpha, run through the valley and you come across a group of four with a checkpoint before them. On Winter Contingency, two run around the corner when starting the mission so you can always just restart that, but I think you may have to sit through the Falcon flight to do so unless you can trigger a checkpoint. There are some more when you first fight Elites, and then more as you drive the truck around the place. You can run them over but it’s harder, I suggest jumping out and shooting or punching them. I reckon there are 15 in the level but a quick two runs would easily get this. I bet somewhere there’s a useful checkpoint just before a group of them too.

Killing Spree – Earn a Killing Spree in multiplayer Matchmaking – 2000 cR

A Killing Spree in MP is killing 5 people without dying. Grifball and Rumble Pit are my two suggestions, since they’re both pretty easy to go on a run without dying, especially if you can play Juggernaut and then be the Juggernaut. Infection’s good when you’re human, Invasion’s good if the opposition just run at you and you work as a team.

Some Moa burgers and cold beer tonight 🙂

Good luck to all attempting the challenges today!

Unfortunately, i can verify that the daily cR cap is still set at 120k.
I hit the daily cap today in 3 hours of gameplay, weekly already done, and only 31k in custom credits received. I hit the limit this morning after a BTB game in which i finished the spree challenge and got a 3000 credit jackpot. I got 12 credits from that game. Something’s gotta be done, and 343 really needs to finally update the daily credit limit. The December update is 13 days old now…

By the way Matthew, hate to nit-pick…
…but you have it written in the guide for the Moa challenge that it may be done during the Nightfall mission. This sir, is incorrect. The challenge is only to be completed during the W.C. mission.

Good day to all, thanks for hearing me out, and Happy Holidays no matter the local…

    – seventh dawg

Would you mind sharing what you are doing to be able to get 120K credits in only 3 hours? Apparently, I am not doing the right game types and not setting the right custom challenges because I don’t think there is any way I could get that many credits in only 3 hours. It would probably take me double that amount of time.

      • Scruff 815 says:

Seventh Dawg is a very high rank (a Reclaimer) – therefore he earns considerably more credits per game than lower ranks. Which means it’d take him less games, and less time, to hit the credit cap.

As for Custom Challenges, go for a high amount of kills, medals and wins in 3 hours and you’ll easily get 30,000+ for the challenges.

      • 'Cos says:

        Indeed, Scruff is right…

I played big team battle last night, which nets me over 7.5k a game, plus jackpots. I believe i got about 4 last night. Plus the dailies from yesterday. Plus the custom challenges. It all adds up rather quickly.

For the record, since it’s creation, i have started out my evening…every evening…with an hour to an hour and a half of firefight for a 20k custom challenge reward. 840 kills/840 medals. Skirmisher attack on Holdout, Corvette, or Courtyard. Each game is about 5 minutes. If you are trying to get as many cR as possible each day, this is an excellent way to do it.

…and hit the daily cap as well! 😦

If you have any more questions, let me know. Sorry for being so vague earlier. And thanks Scruff for coming to my aid, as you always do my friend!

        *insert tea-bag now*

    • 'Cos says:

…by the way, you DID read where i said 3 hours “of gameplay”. Very important distinction, here!

    • Matthew Vose says:

      Au contraire:

      Game in Nightfall (check medals):

      My current challenge status:

I like Nighfall for this challenge because it’s really simple from RPA to run past the Rancors and get a checkpoint just a spot where you can easily snipe up to 4 Moa, then restart last save and do it over again. Simples!

      • 'Cos says:

        Sorry Matthew.

I merely saw the description read “in Winter Contigency”. I had no idea one could complete the challenge in Nightfall. This is good as i much prefer the Nightfall Moa groupings. Simples indeed…

  3. FireySplork says:

I too can verify that the cR limit is still 120k. It is truly getting very annoying due to the fact that i was only 40k away from ranking up when i hit it. Oh well, i should rank up today.

  4. CharlesDeCook96 says:

What exactly are custom challenges? Sorry if I’m being stupid.

    • Dragao1010 AKA: Brian says:

sign in with your xbox at halowaypoint.com and you’ll find the rest on your own? msg me back and ill show you the easiest/maxed out custom challenges 😀

      • CharlesDeCook96 says:

Ahh, cheers. And if you could pop me a message on Xbox that’d be much appreciated 😀

      • chriscray says:

Thanks for that answer, I was going to type this same question, but its already here!

      • Scruff 815 says:

Or you could just post them on here…

What I would do if I wanted a huge credit payout would be around 250 kills in MM, 500 medals in MM, and 20 wins in MM, all for 3 or 4 hours – then I would play Grifball and/or SWAT with a good team where every kill is going to give at least one medal.

Campaign and Firefight challenges both give terrible payouts so MM is definitely the way to go – there is no such thing as an “easy maxed out challenge” though. 100 kills in SWAT might seem fine, but then you might get matched against a team of 4 Inheritors for 8 games in a row who don’t let you get a single kill.

Of course, this would mean that you’d have to play solidly for 3 or 4 hours. Credits don’t come free y’know.

  5. MarineBinkie7 says:

I’ll take the combo too.. (easiest maxed custom challenges) it would be mucho appreciated…

  6. dodoweirdo says:

For the Nature V.S Nurture challenge, I would recommend loading up rally point Alpha. Literally right after the bend, there are a whole flock running down the hill. Oh and 2 Skirmishers, let Carter or Jorge take care of that. Just speed ahead and cut them of with your truck, get out, hunt yourself some dinner and then reload the checkpoint until you have enough 🙂

    • thegoatboy says:

That’s exactly how I do it.

-You need to “herd” them with the truck so they go down the hill, otherwise they’ll cut through the rocks.
-Jump out mid way down and walk backwards until you get a checkpoint.
-Kill as many as you can, then restart last checkpoint. Rinse and Repeat.

It may take a couple tries to get the Moa/checkpoint in the right spot.

      • Eskobar says:

I just use the first checkpoint, kill 2 moa then restart checkpoint. Though I will try alpha next time 🙂

  7. Zidane says:

Any suggestions for best cr return on campaign?

    • petee moobaa says:

      Set up 5 Custom Challenges.

      Time: 3 Hours
      Map: ONI: Sword Base
      Difficulty: Heroic

Required Skulls: Black Eye, Tough Luck, Catch, Cloud, Famine, Thunderstorm, Tilt, Mythic, Cowbell, Grunt Birthday & IWHBYD (all but Iron & Blind)

Custom Challenges should be set in this order:

      1. 950 Medals = 5000 cR
      2. 1100 Kills with weapon Laser Designated = 5000 cR
      3. 200 Kills of enemy Grunt Hero = 5000 cR
      4. 325 Kills of enemy Jackal Specialist = 5000 cR
      5. 180 Kills of enemy Skirmisher Specialist = 5000 cR

Then Target Locate your little heart out. 25k cR in 15-20 minutes. Repeat every 3 hours.

(I found this collection elsewhere online; it’s not my doing. The values here are tweaked a bit from the ones I found, though, because a couple of the challenges came up a bit short)

      • Zidane says:

        Good shout

      • Micah says:

These custom challenges are “Campaign” type, correct? I know you can also select “Custom” type, but I’m not remembering if you can use the campaign levels when playing a custome game.

      • petee moobaa says:

Yes, that’s correct: all are “Campaign” challenges. I’ve got a forfeited Custom Challenge on my profile from where I learnt that lesson 😉

      • Micah says:

Speaking of forfeiting, is there a penalty for losing or forfeiting custom challenges that you put in? Sometimes I create a pair for Firefight and a pair for Custom and decide which to do when I get upstairs where my Xbox is.

      • petee moobaa says:

        I haven’t noticed a penalty for forfeiting.

My Target Locator checkpoint gets me 3 Grunt & Jackal kills, and 2 Skirmishers (and a spree!), with 10 medals and 10-11 kills total. So the “limiter” for me is the 1100 kills, which I had to up from the original 1000 (which only netted 4800 cR). Thus, I’ve not tweaked the numbers much at all, since there’s no need (for me).

I’m always interested in hearing about other people’s combos, though…

      • Micah says:

Also, I was curious about those high Medals numbers. I remember seeing a post somewhere indicating that the credits for 1000 medals wasn’t much higher than the credits for 500 medals, based on some kind of limit in place for the challenges. I’m curious if you’ve played around with dropping those kill & medal number to see what impact it has on the credits.

      • petee moobaa says:

…and it should be noted that there’s a 5000 cR cap on the Campaign Custom Challenges.

      • Micah says:

So I did a little test last night and for # 1 of your list, you can get just less than 5000 CR using only 500 medals. However, if you cut the 1100 Laser Designated weapon kills in half, your points drop in half too, so I think that one’s pretty accurate. Also, what the hell does it take to kill those friggin’ elites with all those skulls on?!? They make it through artillary like they’re getting hit with paintballs! Also, I found that if you just run past all the enemies to get to the TD, you’ll be able to get a lot more kills with each use of the TD. There have to be close to 20 jackals, 6-8 elites and probably close to 10 grunts if you don’t kill any of them along the way. Still only a few skirmishers, but they they go down easily in the aerial bombardment.

      • petee moobaa says:

Yeah, those Elites are tough 🙂

Good work on the number tweaks; as I said before, I’d just lifted the numbers from elsewhere, and I happened to get a convenient checkpoint (with very little health, I might add) where everything just worked nicely. I could go back and re-checkpoint to optimise for the TD kills, but at the moment I’m getting a spree with every restart, and that’s helping my Super Soldier commendation out nicely – I’d hate to risk slowing that down 😉

Speaking of Commendations… does anyone here participate in any Multiplayer Commendation boosting? I’d love to get my MP Commendations looking a bit more respectable… Anyone have any groups that need another player?

      • Eskobar says:

Thanks, I will try this now. *Target Locate your little heart out* lol.

      • Eskobar says:

        Grunts: 4, Jackals: 6, Skirmishers: 2, Target Kills: 13, Medals: 11, per checkpoint 🙂

      • petee moobaa says:

        Nice numbers!

They’d reduce my effort by about 2 minutes per 25k cR 😉

      • Eskobar says:

Still it takes 15 hours to the daily cap using the designator. In Swat using DMR, 6 hours! Is there a way to save challenges?

      • petee moobaa says:

Yes, but you have to have skill to get cRedits in SWAT 😉

(What Custom Challenges are you setting up there, BTW?)

As for saving Customs… not that I know of. But muscle memory is starting to evolve with my series of Challenges… 😉

      • Eskobar says:

        300 headshots: 30000cR
        450 Medals: 29668cR
        10 Wins: 6593cR

        30k cR max!

This was before they reduced the payout by 25% and took away combined kill challenges (not sure what the max payout is at now for medals etc) but it’s still just over 50k cR per 3 hours of SWAT with the above challenges.

      • Eskobar says:

I just checked it’s 25k cR for 600medals/3hours and 30k cR for 800medals/3hours. So unless you get an insane amount of medals per game that is impossible to get.

Good to have the Designator challenges for busy days get easy 25k extra credits.

  8. 'Cos says:

    Sorry Zidane –
Unfortunately there is no good cR return for completing campaign missions. Other than commendation credits and weekly/daily credit bonuses one gets during or upon completion, mission credits are worthless. I personally don’t think it’s worth the custom challenge credits either.

    The weekly of 22k is a good one though. It’s a start…

Good luck, sir. You’re almost there!
