20th December – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

Christmas song of the day is a slight comic break, the Amateur Transplants singing ‘Hallelujadinfinitum’. The whole album (Have Yourself a Sweary Little Christmas) is very funny, the duo are known for clever lyrical twists on pop songs, and here they demonstrate it excellently by singing alternate lyrics to ‘Hallelujah’. It’s a little lengthy but worth sticking with. If you get a chance also check out ‘Joseph’s Song’, which I’m sad isn’t yet available on YouTube.

The challenges today are:

  1. Shootin’ and Lootin’ – Kill 150 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 2250 cR
  2. J.H. Death Machine – Kill 70 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking with the Grenade Launcher – 1250 cR
  3. Points Pyramid – Score 100,000 points on any Campaign mission – 3500 cR
  4. Not as Clumsy or Random… – Earn 5 kills with precision weapons in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2000 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Shootin’ and Lootin’ – Kill 150 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 2250 cR

You’re better off doing the other challenges first then mopping this up if you’ve not done it yet. Best options for this specifically:

  • Forge – make a game with players spawning in one spot and camp it
  • Firefight – Download my Firefight Invincible game type on my File Share, lots of Elites, lots of medals, lots of kills (plus ‘cheevos if you’ve not done the Firefight ones)
  • ONI: Sword Base – Use the Target Designator trick (run past everyone at the beginning, grab it, turn around, fire, wait for the killing to stop and restart the checkpoint)
  • Package – There are points where you can get a checkpoint just before a number of Grunts appear in the final battle, so you can gun them down and restart

J.H. Death Machine – Kill 70 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking with the Grenade Launcher – 1250 cR

Rah, the not doubling credit return moves from third to second challenge today (mostly because it’s had a change to the challenge criteria today!). Score Attack for this one. One of the loadouts is the Grenade Launcher, so grab that and go nuts. The waves are Grunts, Jackals, Brutes, Skirmishers and finally Elites.

Points Pyramid – Score 100,000 points on any Campaign mission – 3500 cR

Three options:

  • Long Night of Solace, Rally Point Alpha. You’ll be going into the space combat, with as many skulls on as you’re comfortable with. Last time I used Black Eye, Tough Luck, Catch, Cloud, Famine and Thunderstom. That gives you a 6.80 multiplier. After 8 minutes in the combat I had 45,000 points. Note that the Phantoms don’t give you points for destroying, so go after Banshees and Seraphs first. I played it on Normal, but the multiplier goes up depending on difficulty too. Just keep playing through and taking out ships and you’ll eventually get there
  • Again put lots of skulls on and play through the end of Pillar Of Autumn. Why you get to the MAC at the end just sit there taking out Phantoms for stacks and stacks of points
  • New Alexandria, again put on any number of skulls and difficulty you want, then fly around shooting down Banshees and Phantoms, swapping out your ship if it gets shot up too much

Not as Clumsy or Random… – Earn 5 kills with precision weapons in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2000 cR

Jump into a Team SWAT match, take out some guys and it’s an easy top up of 2000 credits. Precision weapons are the DMR, Focus Rifle, Needle Rifle and Sniper Rifle.

  1. Thank you for the tips on Point Pyramid, I shall give it a try. There are two campaign challenges for me today, I will enjoy it. Had lost interest in Xbox for some time, but I feel it’s time to start the gaming again.

Does anyone know if there will be any fun Christmas challenges? Just a thought.

Amateur Transplants is a brilliant name for a band!

100K in points!? That’s a hefty sum. I might well try the mac cannon approach for this, but that depends on where rally point bravo puts me. Or I might just have a save point at the end all set up from helping someone with the legendary campaign the other day…fingers crossed.

    • Matthew Vose says:

Urgh, RPB puts you just after the Hunters I think (basically at the start of the Firefight section). It’s just painful. New Alexandria for ease, LNoS for the joy of space combat. IMHO.

      • Braythor says:

Oh god! Screw that then, I am NEVER going through the Holdout section of PoA with skulls on again, ever. LNoS it is then, and hopefully I can hit 100K before having to land on the corvette.

I was in the middle of doing the Weekly when the challenges changed over this morning, so it was a nice surprise when I got an extra 2250cR for Shootin’ and Lootin’ 🙂 Then jumped into my first MM game in ages to get the SWAT one done. I won’t be doing the other two challenges today because they’re beneath me. 😉

Also, although I’m not really playing much Reach at the moment, I’ll be around with my godlike abilities to play Game Night on Thursday evening, 8pm GMT onwards. You all know what to do by now. Oh, and NO CUSTOMS. Thank you 😉

    • Sir Galahad 63 says:

I see what you did there 🙂

I feel like typing up a comment that can be easily misinterpreted by some a$$hat to see how much support I get haha

  4. JustHawkeye says:

Fourth option for points pyramid: oni sword base rally point alpha on heroic or legendary with some skulls on (not tilt). Kill the wraiths and take the wart hog to the aa gun and finish off the enemies there but don’t activate the gun/switch. Shoot the phantom that hovers around the area with the warthog until it blows up and watch as a new one appears to take its place. Repeat as necessary. I like this option because the phantoms never shoot at you and they never end unless you activate the switch. Props to epyon zero for this tip.

    • I will try this, had no idea it was possible to do it like that. Thanks for the tip 🙂

    • Roan-the-Man says:

This would be a really neat Idea. If only you could get rid of Kat’s AI overriding your joy and jumping in to drive the vehicle while your shooting at the Phantoms!!! 😉

    • I just tried it, and it works! But very annoying that the marine or Kat will drive the warthog.

    • Meddling Monk says:

I prefer to jack one of the Wraiths and use it to kill the Phantoms; it’s a bit trickier to hit them, but you have complete control and it only takes 5 or so hits.

    • JustHawkeye says:

We normally park the warthog on the hill and fire or give the marine tthe rocket luncher and drive under the phantom. Because he will shoot at it.

  5. Roan-the-Man says:

Apart from the ‘Points Pyramid’ the rest seem like a cinch to takeover! Score Attack/FFA for the First two and A simple game of SWAT should complete three of these.

Then, for Points Pyramid all we’d need to do is Jump into Pillar of Autumn (Legendary) with all skulls on except Iron and Blind that’s about 10-11 skulls on Legendary from Rally-Point Bravo!

It should be easy, apart from those god-damn Brute Chieftains and Elite Field Marshals at the end!

One tip to note is that when you arrive at the Platform at Holdout (when Emile contacts Keyes), go behind the mid level of the Shack to find a Nice Easter Egg in the form of DMR Ammo!!!

Pretty much what you need to save for the end of the level against those Zealot Elites!
