28th December – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

For anyone who reads on the general gaming industry, whether it’s reviews, previews, editorials, industry comings and goings, anything really, you would have read Joystiq. You might even have listened to the Joystiq Show (and it’s predecessors, the Joystiq Podcast and X3F) for some pretty in depth analysis. The announcements yesterday of the departures of Chris Grant, Justin McElroy, Griffin McElroy and Arthur Gies came as something of a shock.

However having reflected on it, for me as a long time listener and reader of their outlets I’ve got nothing but excitement for whatever project they launch and decide to bring to us, and what happens to Joystiq under the new leadership of Ludwig Kietzmann, one of the funniest yet most insightful (and above all fair) video game journalists around. Chris, Justin, Griffin and Arthur are fascinating people who show their knowledge and passion for video games in everything you read and hear from them, so we all wait with bated breath for what will come.

Today’s challenges are:

  1. Fire When Ready – Kill 50 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking- 3000 cR
  2. Above the Law – Complete a Round in Firefight Matchmaking without dying – 2000 cR
  3. Eyes in the Sky – Kill 10 enemies with the Designator in ONI on Heroic – 1500 cR
  4. The Magic Number – Complete 7 games in multiplayer Matchmaking – 3000 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Fire When Ready – Kill 50 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking- 3000 cR

As ever, Grifball, and you’ll get this in a game or two. Try and get at least one buddy to hold the bomb whilst you play for kills (and vengeance), or hold the bomb yourself and pick off the other team as they come at you with hammers.

Above the Law – Complete a Round in Firefight Matchmaking without dying – 2000 cR

You can get this in Score Attack variants, so Gruntpocalypse or 2X as ever if you’re confident in your abilities. Go for FF Doubles or FFA as sometimes it can be easier with people helping you. Remember this is complete without dying, so no time element involved you can take it slow.

Eyes in the Sky – Kill 10 enemies with the Designator in ONI on Heroic – 1500 cR

You can get this in Score Attack variants, so Gruntpocalypse or 2X as ever if you’re confident in your abilities. Go for FF Doubles or FFA as sometimes it can be easier with people helping you. Remember this is complete without dying, so no time element involved you can take it slow.

The Magic Number – Complete 7 games in Multiplayer Matchmaking – 3000 cR

If you want quick game types, Infection and Grifball can be very very quick, so run through them a couple of times and you’re good.

I was reading the comments from yesterday, and I jut have to put my dollars worth in there about why certain things are unsuitable…. Kids visit this site….

    • Matthew Vose says:

Okay, he did apologise though so it’s time to move on and get back to discussing the important stuff at hand like…

Does anyone use any USB adaptors to plug devices into their tablets? Do they work well, and would you recommend them? I’m investigating if a tablet would be a wise purchase or not.

      • Scruff 815 says:

That depends. Paracetamol is excellent for hangovers, but to be honest if you’re using tablets for hangovers then you’re a bit of a wuss to begin with. Just eat some bacon and suffer like everyone else.

Haha my funny tablet joke haha.

    • As I always say about games like halo, if they are rated 16 (UK), they are adult titles… I don’t think we should be falling to a censored experience between adults just because some children may be present. Halo and similar titles quite clearly aren’t intended for that audience.

This is a bit of a ‘bear-bug’ of mines so I thought I would stick my own dollars worth.

P.S. – This is my first post on here, want to say a big thanks to all the people who work this site, you have helped me get through challenges a-plenty and rank up significantly in halo! Cheers 🙂

      • Scruff 815 says:

They’re not adult titles. The UK PEGI rating system is a voluntary system; a 3-year-old could legally buy a copy of Reach. If it were a BBFC 18-rated game, then that’s another matter.

Even then, it’s not down to the game’s rules. It’s down to the individual website. For example, Youtube are totally cool with swearing in the comments and that’s fine. The BBC News site isn’t, and that’s fine too.

There is a swear-word filter on WordPress, which evidently doesn’t include the words in question from the other day. There are many kids who do come here and read this blog, whether you like that fact or not; there are also many people who access this site from work and don’t want certain words flagged up on their browser history.

There are plenty of Halo sites that don’t have a problem with swearing; I’m a regular at one of them and I swear my face off there. But here, I respect the rules of the site. That is all.

PS: Let’s all please forgive the original comment. He came back quite hastily to apologise and we can’t ask for anything more than that. 🙂

    • hate_stupid_cookie_references_guy says:

      Chill out buddy.
We don’t need that snotty Snickerdoodle from halo waypoint on this site.
Sick of that preachy crap..don’t bring it here.

      • 'Cos says:

        “Chill out buddy.
We don’t need that snotty Snickerdoodle from halo waypoint on this site.
Sick of that preachy crap..don’t bring it here”

        Read your own words again…
…and tell me who’s snotty? We asked you and your petty attempts to go away. Don’t know what your problem is, but maybe some good ol’ therapy can help. Notice i didn’t ask ‘who’ your problem is, because as a psych major a can tell your problems are much more deep-rooted and serious than that. God help you, because you won’t find ANYONE here that is willing to do so.

You want a war? Congrats…you got more than you bargained for.

Now take a word of (your own) advice, and take your snotty, preachy crap somewhere else.

By the way, this douche is a perfect example that we do, in fact, have children that come to this site. Only a child would constantly hide behind a fake handle…

I am anxiously awaiting your happy response…as is Matthew i’m sure!

        Happy Holidays to everyone…else!

      • 'Cos says:

        Sorry everyone…

I felt compelled to get that off my chest.

        And yes, i feel better.

        Good day to all, please.

      • JustHawkeye says:

I don’t understand why you constantly complain about halo social/waypoint crap here on rdc? They are not related although there are some common people. Give it a rest please. We all understand you hate snickerdoodle. I come to rdc to read about challenges, not to experience the high school drama of halo social.

      • Scruff 815 says:

Sir Galahad has been a regular here for as long as I can remember. You (hate_stupid_cookie_references_guy) haven’t participated in a Game Night or anything similar; just whined about Snickerdoodle at every opportunity. We get the idea. No-one read your really whiny thread on Waypoint that one time and you’re still whining about it. Go cry, emo kid.

      • callupchuck says:

Please stop trolling for unicorns. Your opinion might get considered if it was dressed as a nut and we were squirrels. btw I like chocolate covered almonds the best.

      • JustHawkeye says:

Aww didnt realize it was sirgalahad, but it makes sense now. Btw reach is rated m or age 17 and up in the USA.

      • Matthew Vose says:

Wow did this get weird quick, I was only gone for a day.

Cookie ref guy – dude, you’re odd, and you post shit that I don’t want to read, stop doing it, you’re pissing me off.

Everyone else – Stop feeding the troll, he’s probably doing it to provoke a reaction that you gave him. Ignore this stuff and let me deal with it. Trust me, I’m awesome.

    • JustHawkeye says:

      1. Kids shouldn’t be playing halo. 2. Kids that are are probably unsupervised and watch all the porn they want to anyway . 3. It was in poor taste (no pun intended), but like they say in halo: No proof/link then it didn’t happen. 😉

      • BJ2603 says:

HA! I fell off my chair. No proof/link = didn’t happen. Holy crap, that’s GOLD!

        Also, ‘Cos, respect.

      • 'Cos says:

Just a quick correction. I don’t know why she said it, or where she gets her incorrect information…but we act like adults at THS. This is starting unwanted, misplaced drama that is false information. Otherwise known as the intent of a ‘troll’. Please be sincere in your future posts, thanks.

      • Matthew Vose says:

Amen to that, if the kids are playing something as violent as Reach, which is not only violent but takes itself super seriously, then their parents are probably not worried about the reference in the comments section of my blog!

And yeah, Justhawkeye is right. As usual. Pics or it didn’t happen! (I believe you though, I want to believe that it is possible, like Scrooge at the end of a Christmas Carol!!).

    • JustHawkeye says:

Whoops. I need to stop posting half asleep. Sorry to sirgalahad for thinkimg you hate cookies.

      Let’s redact that. 🙂

  2. Roan-the-Man says:

    Off topic- I really wouldn’t know as I don’t own a tablet…
On topic- we’ve got about 2 Mmchallenges, one Campaign and a Ffvhallenge
    Alltogether today!

It’s snowing like Hell here and I’m not in a mood to dish them out this early in the
Day! Maybe at dusk thugs might pick up, Halo-wise
BTW, can anyone confirm the Marketplace price of Reach’s DLCs as of the moment since the price
    Reduction ???

  3. What are the chances of getting 343 to offer the flaming helmets to us unfortunate players that missed out on the first two. Somehow I missed out on both red & blue. 😦

    • SgtMaj AJJ says:

TBH Blue was a Bungie gift that I seriously doubt 343i will bring back. I’ve seen stranger things though.

For the Flaming, or Red helmet as you put it, that is still available by either purchasing the Legendary Edition of Reach (http://goo.gl/tMfy2), or grabbing the code from eBay (http://goo.gl/0NAhc).

    • Scruff 815 says:

Red was – and always will be – only for those people who bought the super-expensive Legendary edition of Reach.

The Blue was around for Bungie Day – it’s possible that you can still get them via registering at b.net, but I’m not too sure.

      • Thanks, I new about Bungie Day but somehow totally forgot about it. I think I started doing MW2 on Veteran and couldn’t think about anything else till I completed it. Hopefully they’ll give us another chance at one.

  4. Rossco says:

I wish I could get a flaming skull helmet. I purchased reach twice being mislead by the salesman on how to get that skull. I bought the basic reach version first and was told I just had to beat the game on legendary to get it. Then second time around I bought the limited edition version and was told there was a code in the box to get helmet. Then I find out a month later that there is a legendary edition of the game with a statue and that version gives u the ability to get the flaming skull. Eventually I just gave up and didn’t care. I got my inclement its good enough except I think it makes me an easier target.

    • Locklear66 says:

Yes incliment weather does make you a easyer target to thus kill

      • I don’t use Inclement weather while playing multi-player, I use pestilence ( I think that’s the name ) As bad as I play I don’t need to attract more attention than that. I use the cool looking stuff in Firefight and campaign.

      • Locklear66 says:

I hear ya I use the grunt burthday party one but it’s kinda getting anoiying

  5. Locklear66 says:

Just to clear up any confusion on my gamer tag ( gt ) it is Locklear66. This is for rossco who I think thought my gt was gt. Just a bit of info on halo for those that don’t read the books. Locklear was a hell jumper in the flood I think

  6. Roan-the-Man says:

If anyone is thinking of getting both Map Packs for Reach, here’s my opinion: Forget about them…at least until 343 updates the playlist to include a full fledged ‘DLC Premium’ playlist back again.

I can’t fathom how many people have created topics regarding the new ‘Integrated DLC system’ sucks a** and frankly you should consider waiting it out until they bring back the premium playlist for DLC maps considering their current rotation surfacing within MM!

    • Scruff 815 says:

Nah; I play a lot more of the DLC maps now that they’ve been integrated into the standard playlists; a hell of a lot more than I ever used to before. The ‘DLC only’ playlist will probably never come back; the amount of playlists a year after release is only going to decrease. Eventually it’ll probably end up like Halo 3 where most playlists just require you to have all DLC.

      • Roan-the-Man says:

For those who don’t wish to purchase ‘any’ DLC at all, it would be pretty crappy
For 343 to mandate the prescence of the Map packs to enable MM foe all players! I know
Halo 3 did this and it was a long time after release…but its still no excuse to force anyone into
        Kow-towing to 343s marketing ambitions!

      • SensoryFour34 says:

343 isn’t mandating anything. They just made it so people with the DLC maps can play them without needing a specific playlist for it. The people with DLC maps are more likely to be paired up with others who have them and because of that, the people without DLC maps are more likely to be with others without them. Personally, I think it’s a great idea on their part. (I do miss the double cR from Premium, though.)

      • Scruff 815 says:

        Sensory speaks the truth.

Forcing players to go into a separate playlist just to play the maps that they spent their hard-earned cash on was a bad idea. The playlist hardly ever had anyone playing it, and it also required you to have ALL the DLC packs. Which meant that if you only had one of them, you couldn’t go into it, and therefore never got to play on the maps you paid for.

What 343 did is what Bungie should’ve done when the DLC came out in the first place.

  7. Tony fiorentino says:

The weekly challenge is very simple: go onto the 1st mission and there’s all these shortcuts I can show u here’s my gt: theXEliteXClass thanks

    • Scruff 815 says:

      a) This isn’t the post for the Weekly challenge
      b) Nightfall is a WAY quicker mission than Winter Contingency (a speed run on Nightfall is usually around the 4 minute mark) and everyone already knows about the shortcuts on Winter Contingency. Even on a good speed-run you’re looking at 12 minutes or so.

  8. SensoryFour34 says:

Just wanted to point out the commentary for Eyes in the Sky was the same as Above the Law. Not that everyone doesn’t know how to use the Target Designator already. 😉

  9. MarineBinkie7 says:

Hey, the eyes in the sky description is wrong. No it’s not firefight, it’s campaign 🙂

  10. Eskobar says:

Lesson learned don’t credit cap 3 hours before the new challenges :/ specially at firefight Thursday. 7k each game not counting grr.

  11. 'Cos says:

The daily cR cap resets at 1am est.

    • Eskobar says:

Thanks, that will be 7 in the morning for me (+1 GMT) then 5 hours until the next challenges. I will time it right next time so I can continue my cR gain.

      • 'Cos says:

        @ Eskobar :

Yeah, i know the feeling. It sucks when you have to start totaling credits in your head, timing out your games, and changing your gaming habits…just because of the daily credit limit. Of course, we don’t HAVE to stop playing just because of not receiving credits, but why do that?

        Good luck to you!

      • Eskobar says:

Thanks, I’m currently at Noble trying to catch up to my friend at Eclipse. I’m able to gain credits again 12 hours later at midnight so I can finally play some Firefight with credit gain.

I did play a few games without gaining any cR but it’s best when I can continue my rank. Also I made many custom challenges yesterday so that is one reason I hit the cap.
