1st January – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

Happy 2012 folks. I hope you all had a great night, and the champagne flowed well wherever you were. Has anyone made any resolutions or changes for 2012? My one aim so far is to write and have 52 articles published for video game sites (not my own!). I’m getting time to write more so I need to commit to doing it.

Oh, and get a PS3, a new PC, and play Star Wars The Old Republic, my first MMO.

Today’s challenges are:

  1. Light Fare – Kill 100 enemies in any game mode in Reach- 3000 cR
  2. Cook ’em, Clean ’em – Kill 5 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking while you’re jet-packing – 1000 cR
  3. L.D. Pillar – Complete The Pillar of Autumn, without dying, with Mythic, Thunderstorm, Tilt, and Touch Luck on – 5000 cR
  4. The Little Guys – Kill 125 Grunts in Campaign today on Normal or harder 2000 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Light Fare – Kill 100 enemies in any game mode in Reach- 3000 cR

If you want to do this specifically (as you’ll get it just playing for the other challenges) then jump into something on Score Attack, maybe Gruntpocalypse, 2X Score Attack or Fiesta Attack to get it done quickly and rack up the kills.

Cook ’em, Clean ’em – Kill 5 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking while you’re jet-packing – 1000 cR

Remember you have to be actively firing the jet-pack when the person dies to register it, otherwise you’re just falling with style. Dino Blasters and Grifball are almost tailor made for this, what with the jet pack load out and all. Normal multiplayer games (Rumble Pit, Squad Slayer, Team and Multi Team) and just firing short bursts when you’re about to kill someone – particularly with grenades or heavy weapons. Some useful places – grenades in Pinnacle when people are in the main loft area, Boardwalk again in the central sniper point. The Hammer and Sword work well with this, just use the equipment and fire buttons at the same time.

L.D. Pillar – Complete The Pillar of Autumn, without dying, with Mythic, Thunderstorm, Tilt, and Touch Luck on – 5000 cR

Key to this challenge is the point that if you die, quickly hit pause, then select Save and Quit, then reload your last checkpoint in the menu, and you’ll be reset back, having never died. The best advice I can give is to have a read of Tyrant’s Mythic guide to PoA, which will serve you well here for getting through the mission, and is much much easier than trying to figure it out yourself.

The Little Guys – Kill 125 Grunts in Campaign today on Normal or harder – 2000 cR

Winter Contingency, Exodus or The Package are excellent for Grunts.  The opening of ONI Sword Base has one useful trick – go straight to the Target Designator, turn around and blast some Grunts, then reset to checkpoint. It’s a quick way of doing it, although I prefer playing through levels to up various commendations. Ryan suggested something similar on The Package, throwing a grenade just before the checkpoint so that every time you reset it goes off and takes out a few Grunts. ONI: Sword Base can also be good by just taking out the few who are in front of you at the start then restarting the mission, but if you go for the TD you get lots of big commendations too.

HAHAHAHHAHA oh good one 343 I would like to play one of the longest missions in the game on insane difficulty for a measly 5000 credits.

    Happy new year, everybody!

  3. SensoryFour34 says:

Can anyone confirm it has to be on Legendary? I know L.D. is Legendary Deathless, but it doesn’t say Legendary anywhere in the description. Could we possibly do this on Normal? Even if we can, I’m not sure it’s worth doing it.

As always, if you are going to do this, Tyrant’s LASO Guide is better than his Mythic Guide. Good Luck and Happy New Year. 😀

  4. bigmac7562 says:

Yeah is it supposed to be legendary? It doesnt lreally tell you if it has to or not…

  5. Roan-the-Man says:

    Happy New Year guys 🙂

I guess it’s a fresh start for us all, seeing as how we’ve got a Hard Challenge among the bunch today. Still, couldn’t quite focus on completing it (L.D.Pillar) very fast as I was groggy from a night with family and friends….to top it off I seemed to have woken up too late in the day.

Follow Tyrant’s Mythic guide if you’re keen on completing the L.D for today. His tips really got me through some of the choke-points on the damn difficulty.

Remember to keep that Drop Shield!!! And make use of every power weapon you can find. Precision weapons ABSOLUTELY have to be you’re bread n butter through the challenge (AR and any other covie weapon spells undeniable respawns via Death!!!)

Save and Quit could help you…..but if you’re looking for a real challenge, limit the number of ‘trys’ you can perform to see if you’re as good with the guns and tactics from the competitive edge in the game!

Good Luck, you’ll need it 😉

  6. Eskobar says:

Nice to combine with the Target Locator (custom challenges) today. 4/4. Have last checkpoint for L.D. 🙂

  7. Just got my first MM Be the Bullet! 😀

Anywho, LD Pillar can go die. There’s no way I’m going to attempt the longest Reach mission with those skulls at that difficulty for a payout that I can get in a good game of Big Team.

  8. Neikoh Trixster says:

    HAPPY NEW YOINK!!!

  9. Rossco says:

I plan on not drinking at all for 2012. Gunna be tough but I started in Nov 17.

  10. Dan says:

I try and I die. LD Pillar. No thanks, I’d rather keep my hair on my head. Every guide that says jump up onto the structure and avoid the wraith at the start, easier said than done! I might be better off taking out the gunner with the DMR from far away, disable, run behind and melee to death. I can never jump onto that rooftop. Farthest I ever got on Pillar with all skulls on was just prior to the hunters.
