11th January – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

Well the conference was a success, lots of interesting discussion and people to meet. I ended up compère for the mystery entertainment in the evening, mostly because it was Stars in Their Eyes, and I think they wanted people to be able to say ‘Tonight Matthew, I will be…’. I’m slightly tired and hungover today after a 2.30am bedtime for me. That’s not as bad as those I saw at breakfast who went to bed at 5am!!

Today’s challenges are:

  1. Gunslinger – Kill 75 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking – 2250 cR
  2. A Simple Spree -Earn any spree in Firefight Matchmaking – 2000 cR
  3. Cannon Fodder – Kill 50 infantry-class foes in the Campaign today – 1000 cR
  4. Throwing Fireballs – Kill 8 enemies with grenades in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 1600 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Gunslinger – Kill 75 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking – 2250 cR

Grifball as ever for high kill volumes. You can get 30, 40, 50 and more kills in a good game when you have your timing and eye in with the hammer. If you’re going for the last challenge then perhaps work in something like Team SWAT until you have that then finish this off in your favourite game type.

A Simple Spree -Earn any spree in Firefight Matchmaking – 2000 cR

Sprees cover a lot of options, 5 kills with Shotguns, Sniper Rifle, Plasma Grenade sticks, Swords… and so on. Frankly, 10 kills with anything gets you a spree, so just do that and you’ve got a very easy 2000 credits, perhaps a quick visit to Crashsite/Generator Defence just to do it in a minute or two.

Cannon Fodder – Kill 50 infantry-class foes in the Campaign today – 1000 cR

Winter Contingency should give you over 50, assuming you clear out all areas when in the truck, and take out the Grunts when defending marines, and die having taken out all enemies in the courtyard at the start of Rally Point Bravo and do it twice (or just keep restarting that section). I think Tip of the Spear will give you enough infantry enemies through the whole mission, but it is a long mission that has a lot of potential for death and delay. Your other option is either the checkpoint respawn in the end of The Package, and use the Target Designator on ONI Sword Base – run straight to where it is, ignoring all enemies, grab it, turn around and blast the grunts. Then respawn to the checkpoint or restart mission to do it again.

Throwing Fireballs – Kill 8 enemies with grenades in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 1600 cR

As always I think the objective games in Multi-Team battle are good for grenade kills, especially Crazy King as you can chuck grenades in the ‘hill’ to try and get more than one guy. The Elite variant games can be good with sticky grenades, but Armour Lock is so common now it’s not worth it. I’m thinking perhaps Invasion too, since that’s also not based on kill volumes and you can throw grenades into the target areas when the opposition are unlocking something. Squad Slayer on Zealot can be a grenade fest, Action Sack’s DinoBlasters is excellent for grenades since no one looks for them, Slayer Pro type games can be good. Team Doubles King of the Hill’s variants too.

  1. Mister X says:

Kill 8 enemies, with grenades in a single game for only 1600 cR? No, thanks.

    • Gil says:

Yeah, as if taking out 8 others with grenades in a MM game is a piece of cake while taking out 10 in FF is hard.

      • Dan says:

10 grenade kills in firefight is easy. The hardest medal I ever got in firefight was Corrected. Stuck 15 enemies in a row without dying. Got 3/8 in a team slayer game today, I might have been able to do it in a FFA game on zealot. Still I’m up to 11/16 now. 2 more days till I get the weekly!

    • SensoryFour34 says:

I agree. If I can get it naturally, then fine, but there’s no way I’m gonna actually try to get this.d

      • Dogmeat says:

Just remember that the playlists now under the effects of 343’s title update like Squad Slayer, Multi Team, Anniversary FFA, etc. negate the effectiveness of armor lock on plasma grenades. The latter two aforementioned playlists are great if you choose an Elite Slayer match because you are likely to stick the opponent before he activates his AA. Armor lock won’t save you anymore if you’re already stuck! BTB (now under the effects of the TU) is usually a little too spread out to get close enough for grenade kills. However, BTB on Ridgeline in the anniversary map pack has Elite Slayer come up from time to time. Everyone runs around in ghosts. A plasma overcharge to disable their charging vehicle, a plasma stick to the face, and Wha-blam!

      • Locklear66 says:

        What does TU stan

      • Locklear66 says:

        Stand foR

      • Dogmeat says:

        TU – title update

  2. SamCiphus says:

If anyone wants to play some anniversary MM with me in about 12 hours, add me, SamCiphus, and together we can knock down a challenge or two!

    • Andrew Saxon says:

I’ll send you a request, I’m almost always playing Anniversary classic unless I’m on SWAT or trying to get a daily challenge done in FF. I might be playing more objective today though trying to get some grenade kills. does anyone know if crazy king or other king of the hill variants come up in objective playlists or is it just CTF and assault/bomb type games? anyone know?

      • SamCiphus says:

Cool I look forward to it. I played crazy king in Anniv. Classic yesterday.

  3. SgtMaj AJJ says:

Remember folks, Squad DLC comes with a 15K Jackpot/day over the next week. Play it and show your support for a standalone DLC playlist.

    • Potato says:

Nice! Will defiantly play now. Also, anyone that has the dlc please play the playlist, the more people playing, the more likely it is that we can keep it 😀

      • SgtMaj AJJ says:

Intentional or not, “defiantly” was well placed. I definitely appreciate it.

  4. Sir Galahad 63 says:

    How’s things everyone?

  5. chriscray says:

Wow! 8 grenade kills in one game. Mister X is right, no thanks.
Maybe that high number includes the grenade launcher? Most MM games I play the g launcher isn’t common, and or you get limited ammo, like 4 shots.
At any rate the 1600 cr. payout isn’t enticing.

    • SensoryFour34 says:

BoomBall is great for the Grenade Launcher, but I’m not sure it counts for grenade kills. I know the Commendation it gives you is Heavy Weapons, so it probably doesn’t.

    • Steve Bergen says:

It is not grenade launcher kills, that would fall under heavy weapons. It it frag grenade or sticky grenade kills.

  6. mickoboy90 says:

For grenade kills ill just boost it off with my brother in rumble pit. Always take out each other at same time. Done.

  7. Rossco says:

For the grenades I will just turn on the spare controller and head into rumble pit. Then find where my spare is hiding each life and grenade him.

    • robert p says:

Be careful doing that, i got my son credit banned for a week for doing just that! I think he finally forgave me when i didn’t play for a week so i wouldn’t earn any credits either! 😉

  8. Rossco says:

Maybe I will just try the old fashioned way then and whore grenades like crazy. I have got over 20 gren kills before in a match. Hopefully 8 won’t be too difficult a task. It is a horrible payout for the difficulty level but I want that weekly.

  9. onecykoz says:

343 is messing up halo. i want bungie back.

  10. bagoodwin says:

The credits for the daily challenge may not be worth it, but it is another step toward the weekly challenge.

  11. Roan-the-Man says:

What, you guys finding the grenade challenge hard?

Fret not, if you head into rumble pit and try to vote for Elite Slayer/ Slayer DMRs… There’s a good chance you be able to earn these!

Remember, always strip down enemy shields and get them with grenades or go for the sticky kill directly through plasma throws!

And try to avoid farming/boosting for these kills as not only are they downright under-handed but also ban-worthy (if you disrupt the flow of the game…which you will)!

  12. nVision says:

Just for reference, quickest “Simple Spree” (in Firefight Matchmaking):
2x Score Attack on Courtyard.– Out the room, down the ramp (on the left) to “Ordnance”, grab the Target Designator, turn to your left and blast the grunts emerging from the drop pod, and you are DONE (less than 30 seconds).
