24th January – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

I encountered the first design choice in Arkham City that I disagreed with last night. To get 100% you have to not only play through the main story in New Game Plus mode, you have to do all the side missions too. Do I really need to do all the AR flight training a second time? Especially given I didn’t enjoy it the first time?

Well, if I want 100% then yes I do. I can understand it, since 100% means 100%, but it’s the first time I’ve felt I’m being pushed to play an element of the game I didn’t want to do.

Still, wonderful game.

Anyway, today’s challenges are:

  1. Blastin’ and Relaxin’ – Kill 180 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 2343 cR
  2. The House of Blue Leaves – Kill 177 enemies in a single Firefight Matchmaking game on Heroic – 1300 cR
  3. The Little Guys – Kill 135 Grunts in Campaign today on Normal or harder – 1200 cR
  4. The Dream Shake – Earn 4 Double Kills in the same match in multiplayer Matchmaking – 4000 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Blastin’ and Relaxin’ – Kill 180 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 2343 cR

If you’re going for just this challenge you’ve got a few choices for doing this really easily and quickly…

  • Forge – make a game with players spawning in one spot and camp it
  • Firefight – Download my Firefight Invincible game type on my File Share, lots of Elites, lots of medals, lots of kills
  • ONI: Sword Base – Use the Target Designator trick (run past everyone at the beginning, grab it, turn around, fire, wait for the killing to stop and restart the checkpoint)
  • Package – There are points where you can get a checkpoint just before a number of Grunts appear in the final battle, so you can gun them down and restart

The House of Blue Leaves – Kill 177 enemies in a single Firefight Matchmaking game on Heroic – 1300 cR

One game? So… Firefight Doubles is probably your best bet. Firefight Arcade can work if you get fewer than 4 people (or you’ve got a broadband connection like mine and it pushes you out of a game with other people).

The Little Guys – Kill 135 Grunts in Campaign today on Normal or harder – 1200 cR

10 more grunts to kill, 800 fewer credits than last time? The curse of being third challenge strikes again!! Winter Contingency, Exodus or The Package are excellent for Grunts.  The opening of ONI Sword Base has one useful trick – go straight to the Target Designator, turn around and blast some Grunts, then reset to checkpoint. It’s a quick way of doing it, although I prefer playing through levels to up various commendations. Ryan suggested something similar on The Package, throwing a grenade just before the checkpoint so that every time you reset it goes off and takes out a few Grunts. ONI: Sword Base can also be good by just taking out the few who are in front of you at the start then restarting the mission, but if you go for the TD you get lots of big commendations too.

The Dream Shake – Earn 4 Double Kills in the same match in multiplayer Matchmaking – 4000 cR

4 isn’t too bad these days, Team SWAT works well, but Grifball probably works better for this one too. This is of course 4 Double Kills, not multikills, so getting a Triple Kill won’t count as two towards this.

Damn, those AR trainings were frustrating. Thanks for the tips.

  2. Rossco says:

177 kills in a single firefight game is pretty hard to do especially for 1300cR. These challenge payouts are weird. Big yesterday and minimal today.

For high body counts, I tend to play firefight Arcade using either Holdout or the Courtyard maps. I get the rocket launcher, then suicide to get the jet pack. With a rocket launcher and jet pack, it’s not too hard to get over 200 kills in a game, especially if you can get through the levels quickly enough to trigger the bonus round of grunts at the end. I had a game of Holdout last night with 215 kills.

    • Scruff 815 says:

Why not just use the jetpack with FRG? It’s just like a rocket launcher that you need to reload less often.

      • DaRoflBandit says:

The Rocket Launcher is better before the Mythic skull comes on, and on maps like Courtyard jetpack will get you killed easily, sprint is mostly better (Again, until the skulls start turning on.)

      • Micah (SpartanM914) says:

I prefer the RL because it has better, more reliable splash damage. Too many times when I use the FRG, the shots ricochet and don’t kill anyone. It’s slower to reload, but two shots with the RL is worth 5 of the FRG, IMHO. Plus, if you’re emptying the clip on the FRG, it’s gets hard to see what’s going on after a couple of shots. RL keeps it cleaner.

I got 197 kills, no deaths, using the Camo/Sniper/DMR loadout on Outpost yesterday in Arcadefight. I basically hid during the bonus wave so I could have broken 200 no problem had I pulled out the DMR. The two other players that stuck around for the game both used Jetpack/FRG loadouts but I beat them to every Ghost, every Phantom Turret, and any enemy that spawned outside the puddle/track area in front of the square building. Hitscan weapons don’t mess around.

Sniping on Beachhead is also a reliable way to rack up big kill numbers, and if you can scavenge a RL or Plasma Launcher from a dead teammate to juggle with the DMR (because the Sniper is slow against Wraiths and Hunters late in the game), you’re even better off.

  5. André says:

Damn Grifball, everyone go for the bomb/quick game. Swat 4 double’s then…

  6. DaRoflBandit says:

Corvette on firefight doubles is probably the best for that challenge, I’m gonna try it now.

  7. Rossco says:

I tried doubles and had no luck twice. Then first round of firefight arcade on outpost I managed to get 193 kills. Arcade seems to be way better for this challenge in my mind.
