4th February – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

Well I’ve found the first very unique Saints Row The Third moment, rescuing a guy being held hostage in a BDSM club as a pony with a cart attached. You make your escape on his cart being chased by other people on carts pulled by ‘ponies’ and shooting them as you make your escape. Then they explode when you shoot them enough.

Oh, and the guy you rescue speaks through a microphone that autotunes his voice.

Hilarious. Truly comic video gaming.

And it might be -2 degrees here, but I am going to the rugby. Currently I have three layers on. Will that be enough??

Today’s challenges are:

  1. Blastin’ and Relaxin’ – Kill 180 enemies in any game mode in Reach. – 2343 cR
  2. Light Fuse, Run Away – Kill 4 enemies with grenades in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 500 cR
  3. Cook ’em, Clean ’em – Kill 10 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking while you’re jet-packing – 1200 cR
  4. Office of Not Dying – Complete ONI on Legendary without dying – 1600 cR

Hmmm, seems something’s gone wrong with the credit allocations. Hey ho. Commentary follows after the break…

Blastin’ and Relaxin’ – Kill 180 enemies in any game mode in Reach. – 2343 cR

If you’re going for just this challenge you’ve got a few choices for doing this really easily and quickly…

  • Forge – make a game with players spawning in one spot and camp it
  • Firefight – Download my Firefight Invincible game type on my File Share, lots of Elites, lots of medals, lots of kills
  • ONI: Sword Base – Use the Target Designator trick (run past everyone at the beginning, grab it, turn around, fire, wait for the killing to stop and restart the checkpoint)
  • Package – There are points where you can get a checkpoint just before a number of Grunts appear in the final battle, so you can gun them down and restart

Light Fuse, Run Away – Kill 4 enemies with grenades in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 500 cR

Any good MP type helps here. Obviously Elite Slayer is good for Plasma Grenades, and I think Slayer Pro, or maybe Team Slayer, has a loadout with Plasma grenades too. This is with any grenade too, so just jump in your favourite game type that gives you grenades and start throwing grenades into firefights. Squad Slayer on Zealot can be excellent for this, because you get groups running around and some fairly long but tight corridors.

Cook ’em, Clean ’em – Kill 10 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking while you’re jet-packing – 1200 cR

Remember you have to be actively firing the jet-pack when the person dies to register it, otherwise you’re just falling with style. Dino Blasters and Grifball are almost tailor made for this, what with the jet pack load out and all. Normal multiplayer games (Rumble Pit, Team and Multi Team) and just firing short bursts when you’re about to kill someone – particularly with grenades or heavy weapons. Some useful places – grenades in Pinnacle when people are in the main loft area, Boardwalk again in the central sniper point. The Hammer and Sword work well with this, just use the equipment and fire buttons at the same time.

Office of Not Dying – Complete ONI on Legendary without dying – 1600 cR

As ever my advice is to read through the details on the LASO Weekly Challenge for this level, plus the Mythic guide by Tyrant, as the challenge itself is pretty close to LASO. If you die, save and quit immediately, then go back into the game to be back at your last checkpoint.

I’ll pick up SR3 when it drops in price… Played the first two to death, absolutely love them. They’re the games GTA 4 should’ve been, IMO. Incidentally if anyone wants achievements and stuff on SR1 / SR2 gimme a shout.

As for Reach, today’s challenges are stupid. Can’t believe how low the payouts are! I’m also giving up on the Weekly. I hate Grifball and even with several games under my belt I’m not even at 100 multikills. And since I can get 25k in a couple of games of FF, I’ll just do that instead. And maybe play something else too 🙂

SR 1 and 2 are some of the funnest games I have ever played, and I rank SR 2 as very close to my favourite game ever. I am someone who likes these games not for the absurdity, but for the game mechanics, great voice acting and all the customisation!
Which is why SR 3 left me wanting so much more. Seeing as The Saints are now just corporate fatcats, the gangster-ness is taken out of the game. The city takeover mechanic is basically broken too, and the absurdity is scaled up to the extreme. There’s less customisation as well! (No spinners!!!) Plus, the storylines in general are too short. All in all, a massive let down for me.

    500cR? Wow. What’s with the greed 343??

League is always a cold affair, maybe not -2 but I’ve been to several games in Melbourne that were single digit nights. Forget layers Matthew, beer is the answer! Super jealous as league is still a few weeks away from season opener here in Australia.

“Office of Not Dying” is a funny name, but the cR is nowhere near worth it. To make the level worth your time, you’d need to do it on a speedrun close to the record times posted by RC Master and others. So what we’re left with here is a cR payout that (a) fails to recognize the dedication of people that can speedrun ONI in their sleep; (b) fails to recognize the ingenuity of people who speedrun ONI for the first time and survive; and (c) fails to recognize the dedication of people who will gut it out over a 20-25 minute run just to complete the challenge. Even if you’re a Save and Quit type like me (damned Wraiths/Concussion Rifle Ultras/FRG Turrets/suicide Grunts/etc.) that’s too much time expended 🙂

Aeeing the credits so low makes me want to catch up on some other games.

  6. Losing the faith says:

i’ve faithfully played Reach every single day since it came out, always looking forward to working at the daily challenges. but today’s pathetically low credits leaves me with no desire to even pick up the controller.

  7. Jason says:

This is kind of pathetic. I’ve seen them offer low credits for offline challenges (though never as low as 500 cR that I can remember) for what I’ve always assumed was an attempt to encourage people to buy a Gold Membership. Much the same way that they have a weekly challenge to complete X amount of Daily Challenges, and they will have several offline challenges to get people close to the number, then pull offline challenges completely and make all the rest multiplayer to ensure that somebody with a Silver Membership must upgrade to complete it. But I’ve never seen them get all cheap with online Challenges before.

    • Scruff 815 says:

…. Every Friday is multiplayer matchmaking day. Where every challenge is to be completed in online multiplayer matchmaking. They’ve been doing all online ones every Friday for nearly 18 months…

      • Jason says:

If you’re talking about what I was saying about turning off offline challenges while offering the weekly challenge for completing X amount of daily challenges, that doesn’t account for the fact that they then usually don’t have any offline challenges for Sat and Sun, or not enough to complete it. I have a gold membership now, but I used to not have one, and that weekly challenge popped up several times. Never once was it possible to complete, even though in the beginning they had a bunch of offline challenges. It would always let you get within 1-2 of the number needed, then there wouldn’t be anymore. I’m sure the idea was to make people feel like they were SO CLOSE to getting that weekly challenge, that they might pull the trigger on a gold membership to finish it.

The payout really aren’t that bad. Shootin’ and Lootin’ has a pretty good amount for the effort it takes, and Cook ’em, Clean ’em should be worth a bit more, but not much more. Maybe only 500 or so. Light Fuse, Run Away should be worth somewhere from 1000 or 1500 cR, but if you get a good game of Slayer Pro or Multi-team, it’s really easy. Office of Not Dying has a great name, but I don’t care about the payout because I probably wouldn’t have done it anyway. If it comes down to it, just make Custom Challenges to make up for the cR you think you’re losing out on.

    • DaRoflBandit says:

Custom challenges don’t seem to be working…. I mean, I can’t get any credits from them, even if I complete them.
