25th February – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

According to the latest bulletin the new Custom Challenge bonus for the week is that if you include Grunts as your type of kill you’ll get 5 times the usual multiplier. Whilst there are still limits on what challenges will reward you, this in theory means you only have to kill 1/5 of the volume of Grunts to get that same reward.

I don’t know what the jackpot is on this weekend – anyone seen a message about it yet?

Today’s challenges are:

  1. Covenant-cide – Kill 120 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking – 3200 cR
  2. Light Fuse, Run Away – Kill 4 enemies with grenades in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 500 cR
  3. Short, Controlled Bursts – Kill 100 enemies with automatic weapons in the Campaign today – 2500 cR
  4. Participation Counts – Complete 4 games in multiplayer Matchmaking – 2400 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Covenant-cide – Kill 120 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking – 3200 cR

You could do this in one game of Gruntpocalypse, 2X Score Attack or some of the other variants. 2X is good because you’re likely to get slightly more than 120 so it takes account of TKs from the Covvies.

Light Fuse, Run Away – Kill 4 enemies with grenades in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 500 cR

Any good MP type helps here. Obviously Elite Slayer is good for Plasma Grenades, and I think Slayer Pro, or maybe Team Slayer, has a loadout with Plasma grenades too. This is with any grenade too, so just jump in your favourite game type that gives you grenades and start throwing grenades into firefights. Squad Slayer on Zealot can be excellent for this, because you get groups running around and some fairly long but tight corridors.

Short, Controlled Bursts – Kill 100 enemies with automatic weapons in the Campaign today – 2500 cR

Automatic weapons are those that fire repeatedly, namely the Assault Rifle, Plasma Repeater, Plasma Rifle, Needler and Spiker. In Campaign you want a mission with lots and lots of enemies quickly. As usual, Winter Contingency’s a good one as it’s not too hard, and the enemies come quickly. Stick to Normal difficulty so you don’t have to spend too long. There are tricks in some places like Rally Point Bravo on The Package where you can get a checkpoint just before a group of Grunts so you can take out 5 quickly, then restart checkpoint and do it again.

Participation Counts – Complete 4 games in multiplayer Matchmaking – 2400 cR

Complete 4 games. Don’t drop out. Get to the end of each. Just play through them. Doesn’t matter if you win or lose. Sorry, I can’t drag out this explanation any further. Is there a way of doing this quickly? Infection is a very fast game type so you’ll probably get it done in 10 minutes using that, or Grifball if you want to just go after the bomb score.

Interesting news Matt. Where can I sign up for the newsletter or read it?

I have found the fastest way to do this is to start at Rally Point Bravo on Winter Contingency on Normal difficulty. You spawn outside the relay station with the Assault Rifle. Kill the Grunts and Jackals outside with the Assault Rifle. After they are gone trade your secondary weapon for a Needler dropped by an enemy. Run inside the building and pick up more Assault Rifle ammo. Then stay inside the building while the waves of Covenant arrive. Pick off a few with the Assault Rifle and Needler, but you are just waiting for the scripted event of Kat closing the door. Trigger and then skip the cutscene.

After the cutscene, trade your Magnum for a DMR. Run laterally so you have an angle on the three gas tanks then shoot the valves off of the top of each tank with the DMR. That will cause the tanks to explode, wiping out most of the Covenant and saving time. Use the DMR to take out the Zealot Elite.

Run up to the beginning of the L-shaped hallway. Take out the Grunts and Jackals from the stairs leading to the hallway, but DON’T enter the hallway yet. When the hallway is clear top off your Assault Rifle ammo from the rack on your right. THEN enter the hallway.

As you get halfway down the hallway you will get a Checkpoint and then 5 grunts will spawn around the corner ahead. Use the Assault Rifle to take them out. Reload the checkpoint and repeat. It should take around 5 minutes total to reach 100 kills.

Hey, I’ve been using that checkpoint for automatic and grunt kills too! Which do you think is better, this one or the one on The Package at rally point bravo?

      • MJOLNIR Tester says:

I haven’t used The Package one because this one is so easy I haven’t tried the other.

It is worthwhile creating three custom challenges before doing this one with Gruntpocalypse.
I made the following custom challenges, based on the usual mix of enemies in Gruntpocalypse:

Kill 30 Grunt Infantry: 1098 credits
Kill 50 Grunt Specialists: 3659 credits
Kill 25 Grunt Heroes: 2745 credits

You can reduce the targets slightly if you want more margin to try to do it in one game. If you can get 120 kills in one game of Gruntpocalypse you will get an additional 3200 + 1098 + 3659 + 2745 = 10,702 credits from that one game of Gruntpocalypse. Even if you fall short you will easily get the challenge in a second game of Gruntpocalypse.

BTW, my favorite map for Gruntpocalypse is Glacier. I run to the Near Bridge area, behind the barriers. You are close to an ammo locker and the Grunts can’t outflank you. They have to come at you from one direction and there are long sightlines so you can pick them off at a distance.

When I hear the announcer say “reinforcements” I switch to a Plasma Pistol and run to a spot near the ammo locker and look toward the end of the cul-de-sac. Often, a group of 4 or 5 Grunts will spawn and one sticky grenade will take all of them out.

    • DaRoflBandit says:

I’ll maybe try that one later, but is it better than on Corvette?

      • MJOLNIR Tester says:

I can complete Gruntpocalypse fastest on Glacier, usually around 9 minutes.

      • JThomas says:

Not fast enough to be honest…I can finish Gruntpoc on Corvette consistently in 5:30. If you want advice, check out my file share. GT:Fazzy06

    • SamCiphus says:

I’ve managed about 8 mins on Courtyard for Grutpoc before. I reckon that’s the best map for it, you can just go to the end of the walkway and get overkills from the groups of four that come towards yiu, as well as just snipe the enemies down below.

      • André says:

I managed 8 minutes on Outpost I think that is the best map. Good view from the base, and ammo box right below.

      • André says:

And Corvette of course since it’s a very small map.

For noobs like me who don’t use halo waypoint heres a guide

    Custom challenge bonus, Nice!

    • André says:

      150 Grunt Specialists: 10000cR
      150 Grunt Hero: 10000cR
      175 Grunt Infantry: 10000cR
      400 Medals: 5099cR

Total: 35099cR, 5 games of Gruntpocalypse.

      • Paul says:

10,000cR seems to be the cap – playing around with the kill volumes led me to the following mix:

        50 Grunt Hero: 9560cR
        75 Grunt Specialist: 9560
        120 Grunt Infantry: 7648cR
        400 Medals: 5099cR

you should get the Hero and Specialist in the first two games, turn them in and recreate them, do two more games – 50987cR for 4 games!

Just managed Perfectionist on Waterfront but would normally do Unearthed/Corvette/Courtyard for Gruntpoc – Courtyard in particular if you grab the Target Locator which can get you a couple of killionaires in a game.
