6th March – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

And as if by magic the embargo for the early Halo 4 looks has passed, so we’re getting more details on it now. Check out this Vidoc from 343i about it, some interesting tidbits in there. Kotaku, IGN, Joystiq and OXM have all done a piece on it too, so you’ll see other thoughts and views coming out over the next few days too I bet.

Interesting how all this info is coming out on Mass Effect 3 release day. Is the point to distract people from ME3? I can’t see it impacting on the sales, so perhaps it’s just to keep the Halo series in the public consciousness.

Today’s challenges are:

  1. One Spartan Army – Kill 400 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking – 2000 cR
  2. Demon – Kill 40 Elites in Firefight Matchmaking – 2800 cR
  3. …Is A Virtue – Score 40,000 points in any Campaign mission with less than 3 deaths – 2000 cR
  4. Who’s the Big Winner? – Win 10 games in multiplayer Matchmaking – 5343 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

One Spartan Army – Kill 400 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking – 2000 cR

You get 120 Grunts in Gruntpocalypse, about 100 enemies in Score Attack, 120-135 in 2X SA, and something like 330 in a Firefight Matchmaking game (although split between up to 4 people). If you need to ‘top up’ your FF kills, jump into a game of Generator Defense or Crashsite and once you have your kills give up the defense.

Demon – Kill 40 Elites in Firefight Matchmaking – 2800 cR

A lot of the unusual solo Firefight MM variants give around 25 Elites these days – 2X, Fiesta etc. Firefight Doubles might well be a good way to go here if you pick Arcadefight on a map you both like, although I’m not sure if that’ll give you enough Elites to split.

…Is A Virtue – Score 40,000 points in any Campaign mission with less than 3 deaths – 2000 cR

To up the points you receive the two steps are to turn on as many skulls as you’re comfortable with and play in a higher difficulty setting. This is up to you, of course putting on skulls makes death more likely so it’s a fine line depending on your ability. The best places to score points in Campaign missions are Rally Point Alpha in Long Night of Solace, New Alexadnria, or Rally Point Bravo in Pillar Of Autumn. In LNOS you get massive points for taking out Banshees and Seraphs. In New Alexandria the same goes except Wraiths get you lots of points too. In PoA at the very end of the mission you jump in the cannon and start taking potshots at Phantoms that try and shoot you down. These are worth big points, but getting there through the Firefight and the double-hard Elites can be a painful thing. New Alexandria is likely easiest just be careful of your Falcon so you doesn’t explode around you!

Who’s the Big Winner? – Win 10 games in multiplayer Matchmaking – 5343 cR

This is just a little bit of a grind. Go for Team Slayer/SWAT/Snipers/Objective/Grifball/Action Sack game types so you only have two teams playing and a better chance of winning. I’d also recommend finding some guys you play well with and sticking with them. You’ll get lots of credits from the games too.

Terrible challenges today, and poor payouts. Although I really shouldn’t be complaining, seeing as i’ve been confining my halo exclusively to custom challenge-ridden GruntPoc, which can easily net anybody 200,000 cR in about 5 hours.

    • SamCiphus says:

Oh, and a special thanks to Andre who initially told us the ratios for receiving max credits!

    • MissedTheApex says:

I feel the same way, on both counts. I saw the challenges this morning and thought “no way, not worth the effort”. 2000 cR for 400 kills…an hour of Firefight?!

Then I realized I’m just spoiled by getting 30k every time a play a couple games of Gruntpocalypse. The custom challenges have seriously skewed my standards. =]

      • Gil says:

How on earth do you do that? I get about 2k per Gruntpocalypse in Score Attack and bugger all credits setting up a personal Gruntpocalypse game.

      • MissedTheApex says:

Well, right now (it should be ending any time) there’s a custom challenge bonus on grunts. If you set up your custom challenges with a goal of “Kills of Enemy”, and set the type to “Grunt [Infantry / Hero / Specialist]”, those three will each pay out a big multiplier. So, basically, if you can kill about 80 Grunt Specialists in a 3 hour span, that’s 10,000 cR. Kill about 55 Grunt Heroes, another 10k.

Here’s the thread with some discussion from the start of the custom challenge bonus: https://reachdailychallenges.wordpress.com/2012/02/25/25th-february-halo-reach-daily-challenges-commentary/

ButIi think this bonus has been up longer than they planned. It’s bound to get changed soon.

For noobs like me who don’t use halo waypoint heres a guide

Hello. I just recently discovered your site and wanted to say thanks for taking tthe time to post these. It helps when i am not near my x-box and i can pull this up on my phone.

I do have a question: what do you mean by ” and then a tasty tasty 10k bonus on winning your 12th “?

Thanks again and i hope everything works out for you and your current cause.

    • Paul says:

Last time we had Who’s the Big Winner? was 22nd Feb and it was 12 games for 10,000 cR. If the commentary above originally mentioned the 10k bonus it was most likely a copy/paste error from that post that’s now been corrected

  3. xXMaster SoulXx says:

I just watched the look at Halo 4 last night …and i’ll have to say I currently still like the Halo 3 armor look, well mostly the helmet i guess because they crunched his visor down for Halo 4..I don’t hate it, its just it doens’t feel like Master Cheif! I know I’ll end up liking it anyways though

    • SamCiphus says:

I can tell you, i certainly don’t care for the look of any of the “Spartan IVs” in MM!

  4. brxoverdose says:

Hey guys just wwanted to bring up that skulls do not affect vehicles so as while turning on 10 skulls on legendary you can play from rally point alpha on lnos and the vehicles will be just as easy as if no skulls were on. You can get 40k points in about 15 min just killing banshees and seraphs.

on a side note dont forget today is the march playlist update. No more squad or aniversary squad slayer. Tu slayer is now its own play list called super slayer along with no more bleedthrough unfortunately. No gametype in griffball involving a golfball and btb heavies for the vehicle people. Goodluck!

  5. jokersgoon says:

Funny… The points for 10 wins is terrible. Save some time and do a custom challenge for 5 winds which I think is about 1000 points less…. for half the wins. 10 wins are a lot for me… not because I’m terrible… I play mostly by myself so I get partners who either quit, don’t play, or are terrible…. like -13 k/d ratio terrible.

  6. brxoverdose says:

I meant new gametype in griffball not no. That was a typo lol

  7. Josh1138 says:

I don’t know if it’s just me or not, but it seems ever since 343 took over, all the challenges and their respective credit rewards have been steadily going down the crapper. These ones today as rather point in case. Things like 400 Firefight kills for 2k Cr one week then 150 kills for 3500 Cr the next, I mean really, are these things truly just a bad kind of random or is there some disgruntled ex Matchmaking troll who sets these up just for kicks?

    • Paul says:

I would go with bad kind of random. It would be nice to see some new challenges though.

Overall the rewards are an improvement on what was originally on offer – take a look at some of the early posts here: 300cR for 30 matchmaking kills?

Mind you, those were the early days where a couple of thousand cR could jump you a rank in one game. It may be that as you progress through the ranks, the (daily) challenges become less attractive as you need so much more cR to move to the next rank and the frustration kicks in of staring at the moon for weeks on end. Nowadays if you back them up with custom challenges there is more reward and incentive.

Personally I just like the challenge of the challenges – my most favourite weekly challenge was to complete 24 daily challenges that week.

  8. Dan says:

I think 343 is Matchmaking orrientated. The way custom challenges pay out the most for matchmaking, or other super hard weekly challenges like x huge number of wins, 1500 kills in a week. They really force you to play certain playlists to get the weekly instead of doing what you like to get it. Example: 200 multikills; outside of grifball it is hard to get.
