8th March – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

Well my copy of Mass Effect 3 has been dispatched, hopefully I should get it today or tomorrow so I can start playing tomorrow evening. Not that I’m at all excited about it, especially after all the chatter regarding the game from American sites!

Another day where you can get all the challenges in one game. The combo of 9 sprees yet without dying makes it a little harder, but if you’re clever with your weapons you’ll do it pretty easily.

Today’s challenges are:

  1. Light Fare – Kill 100 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 3000 cR
  2. One Game, One Spawn – Complete a Firefight Matchmaking game without dying – 2000 cR
  3. Killagruntjaro! – Earn 7 multikills in a Firefight Matchmaking game – 2000 cR
  4. Survivor – Earn 9 Sprees in a Firefight Matchmaking game – 2000 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Light Fare – Kill 100 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 3000 cR

If you want to do this specifically (as you’ll get it just playing for the other challenges) then jump into something on Score Attack, maybe Gruntpocalypse, 2X Score Attack or Fiesta Attack to get it done quickly and rack up the kills.

One Game, One Spawn – Complete a Firefight Matchmaking game without dying – 2000 cR

As ever this is easiest in Gruntpoc or 2X Score Attack. The best strategies to make sure you stay alive are to use Sprint, letting you get to take out 30-50% of the wave before they get close enough to be a threat. Key things to be aware of are enemies with Plasma Launchers and Fuel Rod Guns, who will fire from further away; Grunts overcharging their Plasma Pistols; and guys throwing grenades as they get close. Take out anyone you see with a heavy or charged weapon first. If you see an enemy with a Plasma Grenade, shoot it and they’ll often drop it. If you hear one thrown or something fired then get out of there quickly. Always better to pull back to a different part of the map than make a brave stand. Don’t be a hero and dive in, you get plenty of time to take them all out.

Killagruntjaro! – Earn 7 multikills in a Firefight Matchmaking game – 2000 cR

In Gruntpocalypse or 2x Score Attack this is so easy. The Grunts come out of the doors/dropships/appear in groups of 4 or 5, and you can easily shoot 3 or 4 of them straight away. Multikills do stack so an Overkill counts as 3 – double, triple and 4 kills. Therefore just play the game and take them out when you see them together.

Survivor – Earn 9 Sprees in a Firefight Matchmaking game – 2000 cR

You get 120 kills in Gruntpoc so it’s an easy way to do it. If you can get kills using weapons (ie 5 grenade sticks, a shotgun, sniper rifle etc) then you get nearer the total – use Score Attack to get a range of weapons. Beachhead is quite good as you can use the vehicles to get more sprees – and now on Firefight Arcade you’ve got a good chance of using a variety of weapons, lots of killing sprees and grenades and the like.

I managed to get all of the challenges in a single game of Gruntpocalypse on Corvette. I stuck to the right hand side balcony, using the pistol to snipe the more dangerous grunt types (with the FRG or Plasma Launcher) and waited for regulars to come up the ramp so i could stick them before they knew what was up! I managed to get Corrected on my second last kill in the game!

My immediate thought was also GruntPoc on Corvette. That’s the map were I can be most sure of not dying. But I think three of the four challenges are easy that way, but I’m wondering about the “sprees” one. You get 6 Sprees for killing 100 enemies without dying, so if you plan on not dying, the only way to get the other 3 sprees is with weapon sprees.

Since GruntPoc starts you off with a pistol and DMR, you can’t get sprees with those. Sticky grenades are the only option I see in that scenario.

Curious, though, SamCiphus…. If you’re playing Gruntpocalypse, why are you sniping with the pistol? What did you do with your DMR? What is the other weapon you’re carrying?

I was just going for my pistol commendation man, got it from bronze to silver today, also ranked up to Legend!

      • SamCiphus says:

“Corrected” is when you get 15 sticky kills, I mentioned that in my initial post.

      • André says:

I tried the sticky spree on 2x but failed. 3/4 of today’s done. Need to work on Riflin’ Through 10.000 for gold. It’s going to take longer than Trigger Happy that I have on Onyx 10.000. At least I can work on commendations while unjustified credit banned.

My suggestion would be to do firefight arcade and use the sniper riffle. Pick a good map like beach head where you can stay far in the back and just pick off enemies as they attack your team mates you will also get unlimited amo unlike gruntpocalypse and you have team mates to be a distraction to the enemy. You should be able to get all 4 in 1 game that way

Firefight Thursday and I’ve been banhammered 😥

Two week ban for console. Pesky Grunts, let that be a warning to us all.

Seems to be a common problem at the moment…

For these challenges, I usually play 2x Score Attack on Holdout and Courtyard as they offer the best protection and all you have to do his camp out inside the storeroom and wait for the enemies to come to you.

    • Paul says:

The far end of Courtyard (turn left from the spawn room) by the ammo crate is also a good spot for 2xSA and Gruntpoc – you can move up/down the ramp and pick enemies off from a distance, and reload regularly. I prefer that to camping in the spawn room as it’s too easy to get bottled up in there. Just be aware of when the reinforcements are due – being out in the middle at that point and finding youself inside a cluster of Brutes is not good.

I like Gruntpoc on Unearthed for the spree – it’s so easy to glide across the top of the stairs in the spawn room, collecting stickys and raining blue death on enemies coming up. Got a few Corrected that way recently.
