20th March – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

I sometimes forget that not everyone picked up Reach from day 1 and has been following events since September 2010. The challenge chase was pretty exciting, including a thermometer (basically a JPEG that Bungie updated every so often) charting how many challenges had been completed. When 117 million were done the higher ranks were unlocked to everyone. It’s basically that event that makes people wonder if there could be more, and if there are more armour options than available.

The Mass Effect 3 Operation Goliath seems to have been a success, a report last night said that the target of 1 million Brutes killed was beaten easily, with over 3 million actually killed. Which makes me nervous that the next challenge is going to be even harder.

Today’s challenges are:

  1. Covenant-cide – Kill 120 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking 3200 cR
  2. A Simple Spree – Earn any spree in Firefight Matchmaking – 2000 cR
  3. Short, Controlled Bursts – Kill 200 enemies with automatic weapons in the Campaign today – 3000 cR
  4. Sweep the Leg – Perform an Assassination in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2000 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Covenant-cide – Kill 120 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking 3200 cR

You could do this in one game of Gruntpocalypse, 2X Score Attack or some of the other variants. 2X is good because you’re likely to get slightly more than 120 so it takes account of TKs from the Covvies.

A Simple Spree – Earn any spree in Firefight Matchmaking – 2000 cR

Sprees cover a lot of options, 5 kills with Shotguns, Sniper Rifle, Plasma Grenade sticks, Swords… and so on. Frankly, 10 kills with anything gets you a spree, so just do that and you’ve got a very easy 2000 credits, perhaps a quick visit to Crashsite/Generator Defence just to do it in a minute or two.

Short, Controlled Bursts – Kill 200 enemies with automatic weapons in the Campaign today – 3000 cR

Automatic weapons are those that fire repeatedly, namely the Assault Rifle, Plasma Repeater, Plasma Rifle, Needler and Spiker. In Campaign you want a mission with lots and lots of enemies quickly. As usual, Winter Contingency’s a good one as it’s not too hard, and the enemies come quickly. Stick to Normal difficulty so you don’t have to spend too long. There are tricks in some places like Rally Point Bravo on The Package where you can get a checkpoint just before a group of Grunts so you can take out 5 quickly, then restart checkpoint and do it again.

Sweep the Leg – Perform an Assassination in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2000 cR

So many options for assassinations – you can stealth it and hide somewhere to take someone out as they run past (Sword Base’s hallways, Pinnacle and Uncaged in the lofts etc). You can play Halo Ball Extreme (my favourite for this) as the massive map often means you’ll end up with someone not knowing you’re behind them at some point. Or just play normally – if you find someone AFK then you’re quids in. I found this week Multi-Team Slayer is excellent for Assassinations when you’re on a smaller map (Asylum) as you’ll invariably end up being able to take someone roughly from behind.

What does the challenge chase actually mean? That everything in the armoury is unlocked?

Basically you could only rank up to the rank of comander or colonel or some rank around that when reach first came out and once the community completed 117 million challenges they opened up all the ranks above those. However if you kept playing once you got to that rank even if the higher ones wernt unlocked yet they prorated it depending on how many credits you earned so say you earned enough credits to go up 5 ranks once they opened them you were automatically assigned to that rank instead of them just making everyone stop playing and waiting if they gave them incentive to keep playing. Also at that time it unlocked the rest of the armory because certain items required certain ranks. I hope that filled in some gaps for you.

Has anyone on this list had hardward issues with their 360 hard drive? If so, what kinds of problems did you have and how did you handle it?

Hey Matthew! How’s life? I quit playing Halo REACH since more than 6 weeks. Every now and then I visit this blog. So, where’s everybody else? I remember there was a bunch of good mates here. Well, I have to go (german classes – Deutsch unterricht!). Take good care. Oh! By the way, do you recommend Skyrim?
