23rd March – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

Two key Halo Reach updates from the weekly bulletin – the super jackpots this weekend can be found in Team Objective and Super Slayer, both giving the chance of a 20,000 credit bonus.

The other is that custom challenge of the week is on the Needler Rifle. If you set up a custom challenge using the NR you get 10 times the multiplier you usually would. It only applies to Campaign and Custom games (inc Custom Firefight).

Neat.

Today’s challenges are:

  1. Gunslinger – Kill 75 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking – 2250 cR
  2. T-Hug It Out – Kill 6 enemies with close quarters combat in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2400 cR
  3. Triple Thrill – Earn any 3 Sprees in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2000 cR
  4. Throwing Fireballs – Kill 2 enemies with grenades in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 1000 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Gunslinger – Kill 75 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking – 2250 cR

You could do this in one game of Gruntpocalypse, 2X Score Attack or some of the other variants. 2X is good because you’re likely to get slightly more than 120 so it takes account of TKs from the Covvies.

T-Hug It Out – Kill 6 enemies with close quarters combat in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2400 cR

Close Quarters is a kill using melee, assassination, Shotgun, Energy Sword, Hammer and Golf Club. Infection can be useful, as that’s all CQC. If only there was a game type where you only used hammers and swords though? I say Grifball, as that’s all CQC as well, and easy to get lots and lots of kills. For other mode options, Action Sack’s Halo Ball Extreme is great, and Infection is almost all CQC bar the Pistol. Maps like Sword Base, Countdown and Reflection give you the Sword, Powerhouse sometimes the Hammer and Asylum the Shotgun. I tend to melee a lot anyway so this should come in one game.

Triple Thrill – Earn any 3 Sprees in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2000 cR

This should apply to any spree, not just kills. So you can get sprees using:

  • Hammer
  • Shotgun
  • Sniper Rifle
  • Plasma Grenade sticks
  • Sword
  • Vehicles (two here – kills in vehicle where you do the killing, and kills as driver with passenger killing)
  • Spartan Laser
  • Assists
  • Some for specific variants of Juggernaut, Invasion and Infection

See the list on Halopedia for everything. What’s easiest to get? Well trying to get 5 kills with a Hammer, Sword or Shotgun nets you two straight away. Through in some Grenade sticks and you’ll be there. Vehicles might be another easy way to do it in Invasion or the new BTB Heavies, team up with someone so you can work on your assist levels too. Grifball of course is a good one if you can get your Hammering eye in and take out a load of guys in a row. And although I’ve not tried it everyone says that Infection is really good if you can Shotgun 5 zombies that’s your three sprees done (shotgun, zombie and killing).

Throwing Fireballs – Kill 2 enemies with grenades in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 1000 cR

As always I think the objective games in Multi-Team battle are good for grenade kills, especially Crazy King as you can chuck grenades in the ‘hill’ to try and get more than one guy. The Elite variant games can be good with sticky grenades, but Armour Lock is so common now it’s not worth it. I’m thinking perhaps Invasion too, since that’s also not based on kill volumes and you can throw grenades into the target areas when the opposition are unlocking something. Action Sack’s DinoBlasters is excellent for grenades since no one looks for them, Slayer Pro type games can be good. Team Doubles King of the Hill’s variants too.

Matthew, thanks for the updates!!! Really good info to know! Where can I sign-up for the Halo Reach weekly bulletin? Is that where you found out about the weekly custom challenge multiplier?

  2. Paul says:

    re the Custom Challenge bonus:
The weapon must be Needler Rifle – T31 Rifle. It won’t work with Needler – T33 GML
Custom (3hr) needs 47 kills with weapon to reach the maximum
Campaign (3hr) needs 118 kills with weapon to reach the maximum without constraints
Campaign (3hr, Legendary) needs 91 kills with weapon to reach the maximum

Matthew, I’ve sent a draft on Customs and cR calculations to the RDC hotmail address. Let me know what you think.

    • Siaberwoci says:

Setting this up on Custom with 47 kills only generates 1997 in credits.
Bumped it up to 147 and it only generates 2000 in credits.

Is custom capped that low or am I missing something?

      • Paul says:

Custom is capped at 2,000, Campaign is capped at 5,000.
Firefight is 10,000 and Matchmaking is 30,000.

interesting that you see slightly less for 47 kills – what rank are you? I’m trying to work out if that has an effect on the cR payout.

      • Paul says:

ah, my error in the first place – should have been 48 kills to reach the cap.

      • André says:

I’ve yet to try customs for 2000cR. Is it worth the time? 4 controllers?

  3. Siaberwoci says:

Paul – thanks for your work on figuring this out…

  4. Paul says:

    Custom challenge:
99 kills on Winter Contingency, Heroic, no Skulls with Needler Rifle – 5000cR.

Start at Rally Point Bravo, kill the first set of enemies to get checkpoint, run up the stairs and wait in the room with the Armour Lock until next dropship leaves. Skirmishers with Needler Rilfes will periodically jump up to the balcony outside, melee them (from the side so they don’t fall back off the balcony) and grab the NR. You can then stay in the Armour Lock room and pick off enemies through the floor but they can’t easily hit you. Watch out for dropships firing through the door. Once it gets quiet below, pop outside and pick off enemies at far side of courtyard.

Revert to last checkpoint and repeat. Maybe 30 minutes to get the challenge.

Not as much fun as grunt farming though.

    • André says:

      30 minutes/5000cR will be a grind towards the daily cap (20hrs) 200k.

I’m testing it now just for the heck of it. 5000cR for collecting alot of needler rifles, lol. Not worth the time.

      • Paul says:

Yes, the low payouts are a pain if you’re after the cR. I just did this for the satsifying noise.

That’s 30 minutes for me – you know what a bad shot I am 😀 – probably take you less than 10, the hard thing is knowing when you’ve reached the Target. It’ll take as much time creating/turning-in the challenges as doing them!

There may be better campaign options but this gives you 5 skirms together with the NR.

You could do it without any constraints (makes it Easy difficulty) and do 118 very quick kills, maybe less than 5 minutes. But where’s the fun in that?

      • André says:

Try this: Custom firefight with max shields, faster movement, bottomless clip, needler rifle loadouts & brutes only. Legendary on corvette.

5 minutes (3.5 waves) /2000cR. Only troublesome is when the brutes start using armor lock.

Custom Challenge: 58 kills (Needler Rifle) / 3 hours. Custom game.
