30th March – Halo Reach Daily Challenges and Commentary

More updates from the latest Halo Bulletin on halo.xbox.com, key items for Reach are:

  • April Matchmaking updates – After 18 months of people complaining on forums Pinnacle is being removed from SWAT! Various other changes mostly cosmetic in map choices, layouts and loadouts. And the score for BTB Heavies is being reduced to 150 to try and stop it always ending up on time out
  • Custom Challenge of the Week – Sabres this week, if you create a Campaign custom challenge where the weapon is the Sabre – YSS-1000 you get 10 times the normal multiplier. Tasty, I do like me some space combat (TIE Fighter FTW)
  • Super Jackpots – Again a double jackpot in Team Objective and Super Slayer giving a chance of 20,000 credit bonus post game
  • Final Transition of Halo Services – Various messages now that 343i are taking over all of the Halo services from Bungie. The main thing is that Bungie will not update game stats anymore, Halo 3 and ODST stats will not be supported on Waypoint, file share capacity will go up to 24 slots, although we won’t have access to it on the web until the summer

Some interesting stuff. And some really neat things about the latest Halo 4 map to be revealed. Go have a read for sneak peeks!

Today’s challenges are:

  1. Gunslinger – Kill 150 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking – 5500 cR
  2. Now I have a Machine Gun – Earn 30 kills with automatic weapons in multiplayer Matchmaking – 1250 cR
  3. A Solid Outing – Earn at least 15 kills in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 1500 cR
  4. Triple Thrill – Earn any 3 Sprees in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2000 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Gunslinger – Kill 150 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking – 5500 cR

Grifball as ever for high kill volumes. You can get 30, 40, 50 and more kills in a good game when you have your timing and eye in with the hammer. If you’re going for the last challenge then perhaps work in something like Team SWAT until you have that then finish this off in your favourite game type.

Now I have a Machine Gun – Earn 30 kills with automatic weapons in multiplayer Matchmaking – 1250 cR

Your multiplayer automatic weapons are the Assault Rifle, Needler, Plasma Repeater and Plasma Rifle. I’d recommend Team Slayer in Elite Slayer, so that you can use the Needler to take guys out. Rumble Pit can be really helpful too running around blazing the AR, but it’s tempting to pick up other weapons.

A Solid Outing – Earn at least 15 kills in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 1500 cR

Best ways to get lots of kills in one game:

  • Multi Team Battle – Particularly the variants of Oddball or Crazy King as you can take out people going for the objective, but normal Slayer works well in this mode as well
  • Invasion – Depends on your skill level, but the games are long so it’s quite possible to get a lot of kills
  • Rumble Pit – Most variants help with this, bar Headhunter. Whilst the target is often only 25 you’ll find several players always getting close to the target in a game.
  • Grifball – If you get your timing right this is so easy in any Grifball game where someone grabs the bomb but doesn’t score. I’m hopeful this counts all 3 rounds as one game, so it’s even easier.
  • Team Slayer/SWAT – Again depends on your skill level, and that of your team, but it’s definitely possible to get 15 in a game without too much stress

Triple Thrill – Earn any 3 Sprees in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2000 cR

This should apply to any spree, not just kills. So you can get sprees using:

  • Hammer
  • Shotgun
  • Sniper Rifle
  • Plasma Grenade sticks
  • Sword
  • Vehicles (two here – kills in vehicle where you do the killing, and kills as driver with passenger killing)
  • Spartan Laser
  • Assists
  • Some for specific variants of Juggernaut, Invasion and Infection

See the list on Halopedia for everything. What’s easiest to get? Well trying to get 5 kills with a Hammer, Sword or Shotgun nets you two straight away. Through in some Grenade sticks and you’ll be there. Vehicles might be another easy way to do it in Invasion or the new BTB Heavies, team up with someone so you can work on your assist levels too. Grifball of course is a good one if you can get your Hammering eye in and take out a load of guys in a row. And although I’ve not tried it everyone says that Infection is really good if you can Shotgun 5 zombies that’s your three sprees done (shotgun, zombie and killing).

The custom challenge multiplier is an interesting one but nonetheless a good one; a little variety! This will def help with the campaign commendation progress (even though I rarely care about completing commendations for the campaign, but hey, it’s something).

Thanks for the update Matthew, great content. Does anyone know how many kills with the sabre to get the max?

      • AmadeusMop says:

If it’s the same as the Needle Rifle from last week, it should be 118. Do some experimentation. But I’m fairly sure 118 kills w/ the Sabre, 3 hour time limit is the maximum cR in a Custom Challenge this week. (In the campaign, that is) Someone should see if the map being set to LNoS reduces the number of kills for max cR.

    • AmadeusMop says:

I just checked; 3 hr, kills with weapon (Sabre), goal 118 will give you precisely 5000 cR (Damn!)

      • radadam says:

100 kills, 3 hours (Heroic, with catch, famine and tough luck skulls, which do nothing in the Sabre) got 5000 credits.

      • EkimM says:

so that is 5000 cR before the custom multiplier? Which means actually @ 50,000 cR?

    • michael3055 says:

Can anyone tell me why my kills in the Sabre aren’t registering?Just have to shoot down Banshees and Seprahs, right?

    • Paul says:

Campaign challenge is maximum of 5000 cR – to get this using 3hr Campaign LNoS:

      no constraints – 118 kills
Legendary – 91 kills (no skulls)
LASO – 47 kills (all skulls except Blind)

Kills only register once you have quit the mission, may take a few seconds to appear.

As best I can tell from various challenge setups:
      1) Target is a linear modifier – double the target, double the cR (up to the max for the challenge type)
      2) Time is a complex modifier, not linear – need more detail on calculating this.
      3) The map does not modify the cR (but you may need to select it for this challenge).
      4) The difficulty adds 10% (normal), 20% (Heroic) or 30% (Legendary) to the cR you get with no constraints.
      5) Skulls also modify the cR you get with no constraints.
      – iron, cloud, famine, tilt, blind add 5%
      – black eye, tough luck, catch add 10%
      – thunderstorm adds 20%
      – mythic adds 25%
      – cowbell, grunt birthday, iwhbyd do not modify the cR

The % need to be added together and multiplied by the cR you get for no constraints.

      So if 50 kills in 3hr gives you 2000 cR, adding Legendary with Catch and Mythic will give an extra 2000 x (0.3 + 0.1 + 0.25) = 1300cR so that’s 3300cR overall

I’d be grateful if anyone could post their challenge setups (all details) and cR return (only if it’s less than 5000) so I can refine this

      • JThomas says:

        Great post Paul!!!

Matthew, this is something you should start/save in a seperate “Useful Link” or create some sort of thread for people like Paul to post this. I’m sure there are plenty of visitors to the site that would appreciate some know-how on custom challenges.

      • Paul says:

slight correction, couldn’t read my own writing – the calculation should be:

        2000 x (1 + 0.3) x (1 + 0.1 + 0.25) = 3770 overall

what can I say, it’s a work in progress 🙂

      • Paul says:

Summary to achieve max cR payout in 3hrs for main Goals (no constraints):

Type cR cap K/M/W# Hshots Wins
        Multiplayer Matchmaking 30000 707 354 71(!!)
        Multiplayer Firefight 10000 785 393 n/a
        Campaign 5000 1177* 589* n/a
        Custom 2000 …. …. ….

        # Kills/Medals/Kills with Weapon (last one is Campaign/Custom only)
        * Campaign has Skull and Difficulty modifiers which can significantly reduce these figures

You can see that the Campaign Kills with Weapon is normally 1177 – with the 10x Sabre bonus this becomes 118

Custom still needs some work, and Kills of Enemy is too long to post here

      • Paul says:

      • Locklear66 says:

Wow Awsome!!!! I congratulate you on what your doin. Guys like you and Matthew are the kinda people that get me excited about the challenges all over again.

      • André says:

Nice calculations! I might try Laso later. Is the custom bonus worth it this time?

  2. Turbo says:

I did the three sprees in Alpha Zombies last Friday.

  3. SamCiphus says:

What you’re gonna want to do is get the checkpoint after your first attack on the Corvette’s engines, then fly straight under and trigger it as you head towards the banshees still attached underneath. This done correctly can yeild a Killionaire every reset, getting you Commendations for vehicle kills, enemy vehicle destruction and multikills! To maximise credit return simply create the custom challenges desired, then quit whenever you fulfill them, reset them, and just rinse and repeat!

    • JThomas says:

Hmmm…interesting. Not exactly sure what you’re talking about but we should party up so I can see. Add me: Fazzy06

    • To clarify above post, when you’re first given back control of the sabre, fly to a point behind the Corvette’s engines. Come at them from slightly above, lock on to one, and launch a volley of missiles. At the exact moment when these missiles hit the engines, you’ll be given a checkpoint. Once you let go with the missiles, boost to the center of the underside of the ship and kill your banshees.

I actually got bored yesterday and tried going kamikaze on them…turns out you can splatter Space Banshees with a Sabre! Even got a splatter spree on one attempt.

      • JThomas says:

Good clarification…One missile shot underneath the Corvette kills all those banshees?

      • Siaberwoci says:

The one missile hitting the engine sets the checkpoint.

Multiple missiles – or the gun (I usually use the gun) and panning back and forth will take out the un-deployed Banshees.

Don’t take too long or you’ll get another automatic checkpoint just AFTER you have finished the kills… meaning a restart of the mission.

      • André says:

Backup save on USB. So you don’t have to restart the mission.

  4. Metal Zangief says:

    Add me too Metal Zangief

  5. Siaberwoci says:

And here is someone’s video of this technique – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_E1JsZ2EncA

I take a slightly different angle underneath, but whatever works for you…
