31st March – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

Apologies for posting quite so late, after the exceptional amount of work I’ve had these last few weeks today was a total day off, chilling out this morning, wandering around London for a bit and then at the rugby this evening (we won 36-0, a pretty impressive score for the club at the bottom of the league!). I’ve just made a major dent in a tasty Domino’s pizza, and now I’m all chilled out it’s time to give you all some challenges.

But first… Bungie have made what could well be their last ever Halo post. It’s a page documenting some epic stats from Halo 2, 3, ODST and Reach. I thoroughly recommend checking it out, I like the fact that there are on average more Reach games per month than 3 has had in it’s lifetime. Given how many people still play it that’s actually not an easy thing to do. Go Reach! Are there any stats that stand out to you as being particularly noteworthy?

Today’s challenges are:

  1. Covenant-cide – Kill 120 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking – 3200 cR
  2. Pass The Rock – Earn 20 assists today in multiplayer Matchmaking – 1500 cR
  3. Came From Behind – Perform 2 Assassinations in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2200 cR
  4. Tough Luck… On – Complete a Campaign mission on Heroic or harder with the Tough Luck Skull on – 2500 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Covenant-cide – Kill 120 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking – 3200 cR

You could do this in one game of Gruntpocalypse, 2X Score Attack or some of the other variants. 2X is good because you’re likely to get slightly more than 120 so it takes account of TKs from the Covvies.

Pass The Rock – Earn 20 assists today in multiplayer Matchmaking – 1500 cR

Note, this is not in 1 game, so I reckon just play as normal and you’ll get there. As ever with an assist challenge, tell your team you’re going for it, and if possible pair up with someone. In Sniper game types this is very powerful as you can try to both shoot the same person in the body and one of you should get an assist.

Came From Behind – Perform 2 Assassinations in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 2200 cR

Not too difficult, easy methods are just to hide around a corner in Sword Base or somewhere and jump guys as they go past. If you’re lucky you’ll find someone who’s AFK and hunt them down during the match.  It’s cheap but knowing spawn points can help you in regular multiplayer games – the rocks in Asylum for instance, or favourite camping positions like the lofts in Cage and Pinnacle or the stairs in Reflection. HaloBall Extreme is great for assassinations since you have a big map you’re running around like crazy people on! Another good tactic is Sniper and DMR game types, since people can’t see their motion trackers when zoomed in you might be able to sneak up on them. Don’t forget that reloading and sprinting make noise so people know you’re there.

Tough Luck… On – Complete a Campaign mission on Heroic or harder with the Tough Luck Skull on – 2500 cR

I’m giving exactly the same advice as every optional Campaign mission challenge – run Nightfall, get this done in 10 minutes, tops. As a guide to Nightfall speed run I’ve picked this video off Youtube randomly, but there are hundreds like it. In fact we have further options and details on the time we did it in LASO on this Weekly Challenge page and comments. There are other levels you may be more familiar with, but honestly, you can do this in 5-6 minutes with minimal stress.

OF course REACH!!!! We still play it everyday! I mean yes only a handful of games can say that I think- speaks to the game itself-they truly made a winner! the other night we played the weekly 250,000 points in campaign on oni sword base and did rocket race a few times on it and then played a few Custom and also several firefights. In all when we were done it ended up being 6hrs later. So I think the success is in so many different game types and the variety that you can play. And also the success of the multiplayer and co-op missions w/ friends! We also still do the daily challenges daily. Matthew- the success also shows in how many people read your daily posts and still the daily popularity of it all:). Have a great day to all! See you on HALO 🙂

  2. “I like the fact that there are on average more Reach games per month than 3 has had in it’s lifetime”

Not quite. There have been only 263 Million games for Halo Reach per month (over 15 months) compare with 221 Million games with Halo 3 per month (over 77 months- i.e 5 years!). If anything, it speaks to the longevity of Halo 3.

Halo 3 still has a large lead on total games played, 11.5 Billion compared with Halo Reach’s 3.9 Billion. I’d almost be surprised if Halo Reach can keep up the pace if they stay on track and release another Halo in a couple of years; it will pull a lot of players off of Halo Reach (like it should have with Halo 3).

Don’t get me wrong, I like Reach. But I think Halo 3 might have been the most fun out of them all even though I don’t play it anymore (I’ve been a fan since the original). I think the numbers show it.
