5th April – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

Last day of work before the long Easter weekend here in the UK. My Maundy Thursday is going too quick given the amount I need to get done before said break, but after that it’s feet up, video games and chocolate eggs! Does anyone have any exciting plans for the Easter period?

Today’s challenges are:

  1. Shootin’ and Lootin’ – Kill 100 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 2000 cR
  2. Scoped – Kill 200 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking with precision weapons – 2500 cR
  3. That Pink Mist – Kill 40 enemies with a Supercombine from the Needler or Needle Rifle in Firefight Matchmaking – 2200 cR
  4. Demon – Kill 30 Elites in Firefight Matchmaking – 2400 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Shootin’ and Lootin’ – Kill 100 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 2000 cR

You’re better off doing the other challenges first then mopping this up if you’ve not done it yet. Best options for this specifically:

  • Forge – make a game with players spawning in one spot and camp it
  • Firefight – Download my Firefight Invincible game type on my File Share, lots of Elites, lots of medals, lots of kills (plus ‘cheevos if you’ve not done the Firefight ones)
  • ONI: Sword Base – Use the Target Designator trick (run past everyone at the beginning, grab it, turn around, fire, wait for the killing to stop and restart the checkpoint)
  • Package – There are points where you can get a checkpoint just before a number of Grunts appear in the final battle, so you can gun them down and restart

Scoped – Kill 200 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking with precision weapons – 2500 cR

Precision weapons are the DMR, Sniper Rifle, Focus Rifle and Needle Rifle – note not the pistol! Gruntpocalypse will get you through this challenge in two games if you stick with the DMR. As always, use Corvette since it’s such a small map and use one of the corridors off the spawn room to bottle neck and scope enemies without being too vulnerable. Your best bet is to go for any Score Attack type game and just make sure you loadout with the precision weapons and keep killing enemies.

That Pink Mist – Kill 40 enemies with a Supercombine from the Needler or Needle Rifle in Firefight Matchmaking – 2200 cR

FRG Attack gives you a Needler with unlimited ammo, but that only really works on the Brutes and Elites (and the Skirmishers if you can catch them in the open). In general I still recommend any game where you can pick up a Needle Rifle from a Jackal and put 3 rounds into an unshielded enemy to get the Supercombine. 2x Score Attack or Fiesta Attack would be good because you can get loads of Elites at the end. FFA works well once you get the Mythic skull on, since enemies die less quickly and the Supercombine is more effective.

Demon – Kill 30 Elites in Firefight Matchmaking – 2400 cR

A lot of the unusual solo Firefight MM variants give around 25 Elites these days – 2X, Fiesta etc. Firefight Doubles might well be a good way to go here if you pick Arcadefight on a map you both like, although I’m not sure if that’ll give you enough Elites to split.

Use a second controller and play Firefight Doubles -> Arcadefight. You will have unlimited lives and the game is 20 minutes long. Choose the Jet Pack armor ability and you get a Needler with unlimited ammo. You can easily get 40 supercombine kills in one game.

Hope you don’t get banned. Better to just split the enemies in Firefight Doubles with a live person instead.

      • MJOLNIR Tester says:

Most of the time my son plays it with me. If he isn’t around I use two controllers. My “Guest” controller usually gets several kills with the fuel rod gun.

You keep saying people risk being banned (see below). Do you have any evidence that anyone has been banned for playing Firefight Doubles by themselves, other than Internet rumor and hearsay, or are you just spreading FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt)?

      • Dogmeat says:

If you are getting several kills with your guest controller, I believe you don’t have anything to worry about. Nice to hear you play with your son! As I am only working on Perfectionist and Grounded now, I prefer to play with one or more people as this increases the chances I won’t die and finishes the rounds faster for more vehicle kills. 🙂

    • Cheborneck says:

Yeah, that doesn’t work when you play a game with unlimited weapon. Gruntpocolypse or 2x attack only. But grunt is better cause there are more that weapons that way.

The easiest way I’ve found to do this is just go to the main lobby, sign in a controller for a guest account, go to firefight matchmaking, arcadefight on almost any level (I like Beachhead.)
Once you can’t find any members in firefight matchmaking (Lame, I know.) It will give you pretty much all the control for what map you play on, and what game-type you play.
You will start off with 5 load-outs in arcadefight, the first two load-outs are the ones that you really want. The first comes with a jet-pack and a fuel-rod gun, and the second comes with sprint and a (human) rocket launcher. Once you blow through about 1 round (5 waves) you should get about 40 elite heretics that spawn across the map. Kill them for this challenge

FYI: Arcadefight gives you unlimited ammo and lives, and also gives you 20 minutes.

    • Dogmeat says:

Pick Firefight Doubles so that you get more than 3 choices for maps. Don’t use a second controller where no one is playing unless you want to risk being banned. Just play with a live person and split the “proceeds”. Heretics are random. Sometimes you get a wave of them in all three rounds. Sometimes you don’t get any. With three waves, you’ll get this challenge for sure in a single match.

I thought u said that Pinnacle was gone starting in April? Was that an April fools joke? If so nice if not I’m still seeing it pop up as a pick when playing Reach. What gives? Thx

    • Dogmeat says:

Pinnacle and Uncaged are being removed from the SWAT playlist only in the April matchmaking update. All other playlists that use these maps are unaffected.

      • DaRoflBandit says:

Pinnicle leaving is bad because I loved it, but it was a OP map for SWAT anyway so it makes sense for it to leave. I guess I’ll just have to make do with Sword Base then.

      • Dogmeat says:

I’m left wondering how maps are removed from a playlist without any new maps taking their place. *sigh* Maybe the SWAT playlist will get some love in the near future.

The Custom Challenge of the Week this week is “Mac Daddy”, where kills with the Onager are worth 10x the usual amount. Anyone know how many kills are required on Normal to max out credits? I imagine this challenge could be paired with “Kill enemies of type: Phantom” to great effect, and that the best way to do it would be the early access to the Onager using a Concussion Rifle and Drop Shield.

Also, if campaign challenges are capped at 5K, does that mean that earning 5K worth of kills for the weekly awards 50K? Or is it merely the case that the number of Onager kills needed to earn 5K is 1/10 of what it would be ordinarily? So confused…

    • Siaberwoci says:

All other things aside – it’s that the number of kills to achieve the payout is 1/10 what it would normally be.

    • Metal Zangief says:

118 kills on normal gets you max credits
