11th April – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

New phone time for me this week, I’m going to be ordering the new HTC One X. I hadn’t planned to get it until later in the year, but my current phone had a meeting with the tiles on my kitchen floor and doesn’t look so good anymore.

Still, good excuse for a new toy!

Today’s challenges are:

  1. Fire When Ready – Kill 50 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking – 3000 cR
  2. That Pink Mist – Kill 100 enemies with a Supercombine from the Needler or Needle Rifle in Firefight Matchmaking – 2500 cR
  3. Legendary Friends – Complete any Campaign mission on Legendary in co-op mode – 10000 cR
  4. Freelancing – Earn at least 20 kills in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 3500 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Fire When Ready – Kill 50 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking – 3000 cR

As ever, Grifball, and you’ll get this in a game or two. Try and get at least one buddy to hold the bomb whilst you play for kills (and vengeance), or hold the bomb yourself and pick off the other team as they come at you with hammers.

That Pink Mist – Kill 100 enemies with a Supercombine from the Needler or Needle Rifle in Firefight Matchmaking – 2500 cR

FRG Attack gives you a Needler with unlimited ammo, but that only really works on the Brutes and Elites (and the Skirmishers if you can catch them in the open). In general I still recommend any game where you can pick up a Needle Rifle from a Jackal and put 3 rounds into an unshielded enemy to get the Supercombine. 2x Score Attack or Fiesta Attack would be good because you can get loads of Elites at the end. FFA works well once you get the Mythic skull on, since enemies die less quickly and the Supercombine is more effective.

Legendary Friends – Complete any Campaign mission on Legendary in co-op mode – 10000 cR

There is no requirement on staying alive for the whole mission, having skulls on or how many people you do it with. So the best easiest way to do this is on Winter Contingency. It’s a fairly easy level that if you’ve been doing challenges for a while you should know like the back of your hand! Reach does scale up the difficulty in Legendary co-op, so it’s not the walk that Halo 3 apparently was. You can also combine this with the weekly LASO if you want, but this will be quicker to do without skulls. Does anyone know if doing it in Nightfall with the quick run through is possible?

Freelancing – Earn at least 20 kills in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 3500 cR

I know a few people will look at this and think it’s not a problem, but for us mere mortals this can be something of a challenge. If you’re good at Rumble Pit, where the total is 25 to win, you can get this. Other good options are Multi-Team Battle generally, and specifically the objective based games where kill volume is not the target, so you can keep taking guys down without the game ending. Particularly Crazy King and Oddball I’m thinking. Grifball’s also a good one at times, as is Invasion if you’re human and have a good group/defensible position.

A Speed Run through Nightfall with a spare controller works, as long as you kill the spare player after running through the first area.

    • Dogmeat says:

Why doesn’t the spare controller/player ever get any love? You speak so casually about it like it doesn’t have any feelings. Maybe the spare player doesn’t want to die every time. As its name suggests, maybe it’s hoping it will be SPARED this cruel fate for a change and the main player will take one for the team instead.

As president of the Coalition for the Fair and Equal Treatment of Spare Controllers or Players in the Gaming World, or CFETSCPGW, I encourage everyone to find a more peaceable solution. No one has to die during the Nightfall run. Just keep your head down and hope for a strong tailwind as you sprint your way to victory and an easy 10,000 credits!

    • actually, i’ve found that the spare player seems to get teleported after a certain checkpoint. i just can’t remember where.

      • Paul says:

IIRC the spare gets teleported to where the Moa are just before you get to the power station. In my experience, if you don’t move the spare nearer the bridge, Jun will let rip with his sniper rifle and spoil the forklift trick.

    • Paul says:

Gah. Couldn’t do it on Nightfall at a run with a spare, the first bottle neck with Plasma Turret got me every time. Damn his inactivity! Focus Beams and Elites everywhere. Respawning to teammate kept setting me back, and if I moved him forward we’d both die. It must have been a different Difficulty for co-op last time I did it. Winter Con did it for me though.

  2. Anyone else notice the increased payout for campaign challenges? 5000 yesterday for a BOB, now 10,000 today for 15 minutes tops of speedrunning.

  3. plstubblefield says:

Matthew, you might want to edit that cut-and-paste text for Legendary Friends; I don’t think the weekly challenge is a LASO this time around. 😉

As far as Freelancing goes, I’ve been earning 20 or more kills fairly consistently in the new(ish) BTB Heavies game type. Lots of vehicles = lots of kills!

  4. DaRoflBandit says:

Why don’t you get a Android? I heard they are pretty good- ALL HAIL THE IPHONE. ALL PHINES WILL BE IPHONE. BUY A IPHONE NOW. GLORY TO APPLE

    • Locklear66 says:

Lol agreed love my iPhone. Does anyone know of people that hold weekly game nites I’m close to getting fast Internet and I think I want to try and play in one
