Just dust and echoes…

I’ve been writing this post in my head for a while, and have decided the time has come to do it.

First up the announcement – I will no longer be posting the daily challenges online.

If you are still eager to find out what’s been set for a particular day go to http://halo.xbox.com/en-us/Career/Challenges (you might have an error returned here, if so it usually means you’re not logged in so go to http://halo.xbox.com and sign in, then drop down your gamertag at the top and select challenges). If you want any previous tips on how to achieve a challenge, you can use the search bar at the top of this site to look up the challenge name and view an old post where it was set.

Why am I stopping after all this time? Simply because I have less time to spare for it than I did during 2011, and since there are no longer any new challenges or difficult things to do the need for discussion on challenges has vastly diminished. We’ve seen it all before, hence why you can use old posts to look up the tips on completing a challenge. Back in October 2010 I created the site to have a central discussion space about the challenges, away from the forums where it was incredibly difficult to conduct those conversations, and I can definitely say it’s done that.

In 18 months there have been 881 posts, 18110 comments and over 1.8 million hits. Pretty good I say. 🙂

(And no I don’t know 1 and 8 occur so often in those stats, crazy random happenstance I guess!)

I’m not the sort of gamer to stick with a game for a particularly long time once I’ve played my fill, as my XBL history shows I always look for a new experience. But I have played Halo: Reach probably more than any other game, ever. That includes Snake (at which I am the family champion). What has always made me proudest in running ReachDailyChallenges has been receiving comments from people who said they also would have stopped playing the game a lot earlier had it not been for the challenges and the discussion here about ways of beating them and doing things in-game. To me that’s a great thing to hear.

Posting everyday has been a wonderful experience for me, and everyone who has come to RDC to talk about whatever we’ve talked about has taught me something about running an independent online environment. This seems as good a time as any to doff my cap to HaloReachDaily and HattedHaloFox, both sites that started around the same time I did and who posted some awesome stuff, helping with the very discussion I created RDC for. There have also been imitators and people using my content as their own, which were compliments more than insult. Being the site used in the Reach Service Record app was a pretty cool moment and has again helped motivate me to keep going with the posts.

For the past 6 months I’ve used the site as something of a personal blog, putting comments about what I am up to and games I’m playing at the start of each post. I know this wasn’t to everyone’s taste, however it has helped motivate me to find topics to write on, to think about how I write, and has helped me continue this past the 1 year mark I thought RDC would last.

For me now I will continue with the occasional posts on my personal blog, Seven Months Later, writing the odd article for Pixel Perfect, and playing games like they’re going out of style! I hope everyone in Reach continues to enjoy the game, and I shall see you all in Halo 4 at the end of 2012.

Good luck to you, Spartan

I guess we all knew this day would come. Props to you, Matthew, for running this blog faithfully and amicably for all this time! I intend to forego playing Reach for the next couple of days as a way to say my hat is off to you for your contributions to the Reach community.

I suspect Halo 4 will present an opportunity for you to create a new blog in the future. Until then, happy gaming, everyone!

  2. JustHawkeye says:

I’ll be sad to see Rdc go. It was the first site I checked every morning for my challenges. You’ve done a wonderful job and service Matthew. Thank you!

  3. Ted says:

Thanks Matthew for providing a great service and commentary See you in Halo 4. Ole!

  4. Peggy Peggy says:

Matthew, I’ve been here constantly since around 2010/2011 and although not a regular poster, have nevertheless checked this site on a daily basis. Sounds ridiculous now but I only found out that Score Attack existed because of this site! Wish you all the best with your other sites and life in general.

    Legendary Medal in the post…..Invincible?

    Peace out

Sorry to see you go. My gf can attest that every morning I wake up give her a kiss and look up your post. Thanks for all the help

  6. Joseph says:

I’ve never posted here before but for the past year I’ve woke up and immediately read your forum. Thanks for all the work you’ve put into this it’s been a great help and also interesting getting to know you a little each day.

    Cheers, friend.

    • Louis says:

Me too. Thanks for your effort. It is greatly appreciated probably by more people than you know! Many cheers and thanks from the middle of the USA.

  7. Braythor says:

I’m surprised you kept it going this long, Matthew, for the same ‘no new discussion needed’ reasons that you mention.

The only reason Reach is still in my xbox and not on a CEX shop shelf is because of the people I play online with. One way or another, directly or indirectly, the meeting of every single one of those people can be traced back here to RDC. Without this site I would not have the online experience I now enjoy on an almost daily basis, and the impact this has had on me as a gamer has been tremendous.

So farewell, good luck, and from the very core of my being, I thank you.

Thankyou for helping a spartan in need

I join the chorus here Matthew by saying THANK YOU!!! I learned many cool tips & tricks from folks here on this site (especially yourself). Thanks again.

  10. Metal Zangief says:

Thanks again Matthew for all you advice tips and blog posts! You better do one for Halo 4! For those that still play Reach like me feel free to Add gamer tag Metal Zangief.

I’ll be playing Reach up until Halo 4 release

  11. Outlaw_BAU says:

Thank you Matthew for being there while I drank my first cup of coffee – you did a fantastic job of commentating and hosting. I look forward to getting together again for Halo 4. Maybe I’ll have a cup of tea every now and again to remember to check on you and how you are doing. HALO 4 – holding my breath for a good game and back with old friends.

    Be safe everyone!!!

Nice run! Good luck in future endevours! See you in H4?

  13. Krandyt says:

Hey Matthew, although I’m not a regular poster or even someone that plays reach very often nowadays I still check the site everyday, something which I will miss doing and no doubt automatically click in my bookmarks.
You’ve done a grand job here Matthew you should be very proud!!!
I’ll check your personal blog to keep up with what you’re playing, we seem to have a similar taste in games so it’s been interesting to hear your opinions on them.
Good luck to you in what ever you do, take care spartan!

  14. higglestein says:

Thank you Matthew for the wonderful posts each day on here. I am sad to see it ending. I hope everyone is well.

  15. gruebeard says:

Thanks for the blog. I checked here and Bungie each day…once Bungie bailed on it, I only checked here. (The halo.xbox.com page bogs my computer down.) Looks like I’m going to finish this weekly and hang Reach up, myself. (At least until someone else I know is playing it.)

Thanks for your work. Your blog doesn’t die, it just goes MIA. Heh. -gb

  16. SamCiphus says:

Thanks Matthew! What with the recent influx of argumentative types on here, i can understand where you’re coming from. And doing this for as long as you have is quite the achievement!

It’s great to see all the longtime posters and readers saying thanks too!

  17. Sgt Fullback says:

[So THIS is the way the world ends…]

    Hello, everyone!

I’m a long-time lurker but first-time poster. I’d like to take this one last opportunity to thank Matthew for starting this blog and keeping it running all this time: I wouldn’t have played Reach for anything like as long and would probably never have got past Captain if it weren’t for the information, motivation and suggestions I found here. Thank you also to everyone else who’s contributed help and advice – there are some real stalwarts out there (you know who you are).

    Goodbye, everyone!

    – Sgt Fullback

  18. Josh says:

Kudos to you Matthew for keeping this going as long as you did and for all the excellent help! Although I never got to play a game with you on Reach, I wish you all the best in your future endeavours and perhaps I’ll get that game with you in H4!

    Cheerio! : )

  19. plstubblefield says:

Ditto to what everyone else has said: You’ve done a fantastic job, Matthew!

I’m one of those folks who has been playing the Halo campaigns since Halo CE, but I didn’t own my own XBox or have it hooked up to the internet until more recently. And as anyone who has played with me on game nights knows, I’m pretty horrendous at game types that require accurate aiming. Despite these challenges, I’ve made it all the way to Forerunner, a feat that would have been nearly impossible without the guidance on RDC. And, even more importantly, I still get hours of enjoyment each week from playing Reach.

Matthew, thanks so much for helping to bring a little daily joy into your readers’ lives! Good luck from Seattle!

I haven’t posted anything for a long time, but thank you Matthew for the work you have put into this blog. It helped me a lot in the early going of challenges for me.

  21. Thanks Matthew for all your hard work! This community is in my opinion, the greatest Halo community out there. It’s all friendly, co-operative attitude, there’s a good mix between casual and competetive players, and it’s all about having fun, which is what games are about. I’m glad to have been a part of it, and I look forward to seeing everyone for Halo 4

    See you starside.

  22. Shapka333 says:

Glad I did the weekly yesterday. Thanks for all your time Matthew, I always checked this site before any other. Really good stuff.

  23. clutch1965 says:

A sincere and heartfelt thank you Matthew. I wish you the best in all of your endeavors.

  24. Defender77 says:

Thanks Matt for all the work and I always open your emails 1st in the morning even now to see if I want to plan Halo time in the evenings…guess I’ll have to check a actual site now…bummer. It’s been fun and enjoy your extra free time! Hope you bring this back for Halo 4!

  25. UMD BULLDOG 98 says:

Thanks for your dedication in keeping the up the blog, but I sure will miss it

  26. callupchuck says:

It’s a sad day to see the reliable and resourceful RDC come to an end. But things must move on and we must look forward to Halo 4! I’ve been a reader for somewhere around 11 months and through that time, I’ve met some amazing people to game with. Cheers for the future.

  27. dachael says:

Count me among the first time posters that have been coming here for help and community for over a year. I honestly check this blog more often than I play Reach itself, which is a testament to what you’ve done here. Thanks for everything Matthew.
    See you starside.

  28. Paul says:

Matthew, thank you for all the time you’ve spent on this and on us. I really will miss this community. It really is appreciated by everyone. Enjoy your other games, but I hope that we’ll see RDC (HFDC?) back for Halo 4.

  29. Locklear66 says:

I am truly heart broken. This sit has been what Iv always wanted. A place where I could have a real conversation with someone and it was. I checked this site at least ten times a day and alote more than Eather Facebook or twitter. Thanks for all the time you put into this blog. It has been a new exsperiance for me and I can say I meet new friends here. Thanks Mattew for it all.
See ya as a spartan 4

  30. Hammer says:

Thanks! Hey, let’s do it again for Halo 4!

    You the Man!.

  31. tehmusicman says:

Yes Matt, thank you for all of the aid you have provided all of us on the challenges. I wish you well in whatever you do now and hope you will pick a blog up again when Halo 4 rolls around (provided it would be appropriate to do so based on the game). To anyone who says they may need to hang up Reach because this blog will no longer be updated, Matt posted two good alternative sites in his post and so you can use those to see what credits are available for a day’s picking and then reference this site (if needed) for techniques on how to get them credits. To anyone who would like to play Reach with me, my xbl GT is included below as I am on a quest to achieve Inheritor Rank. (Lol yes I know, not a small feat). Thank you again, Matt.

    • tehmusicman says:

However, I haven’t checked those other websites in what feels like years ever since I found this one. So I don’t know if they are still up to date or what…

  32. RedinHP says:

Wow, first Bungie.net now this. I was late to jump on the X-Box 360 train and only started playing Reach on 1/1/12. I skipped from Halo 2 to Reach and love the game. Now it seems like it’s being kicked to the side in anticipation of Halo 4. I guess that is just how these things go.

Thanks for all your help and hard work Matthew. You helped make my paper chase for Cr more enjoyable.

    • Outlaw_BAU says:

RedinHP, You’ve got some time before Halo 4 – Search this site and find out how to “play” each campaign and learn and enjoy. Then join the rest of the Spartans in the fall for Halo 4. O yeah, take time to go back and play some Halo 3, ODST, etc.

  33. lolgtfoplz says:

It’s been a long time since i’ve posted, but i’m always lurking. Thank you Matthew for providing us with this service, it was a great time. And thanks to everyone who i have met in this time, through the good and the bad we all made new friends. I wish you all the best of luck, and hopefully we all come back together for halo 4. Cheers everyone, and thanks again Matthew.

  35. Steve says:

Yours is the site I checked first thing in the morning every day. Thanks for everything. Gook luck in your future endeavors.

  36. t-rOY (tROYnHI) says:

Thank you Matthew for dedicating your time and efforts in posting the challenges everyday, and giving such great tips. I rarely get stumped on challenges now thanks to your blog, and all the people who contributed in the comments.

    See ya around

  37. Quillian86 says:

Hi there, sorry I didn’t post all that often, but please know how I always appreciated you running this blog for us gamers who play Halo: Reach. This would be one of the first websites I’d look at in the morning, my fallback and then eventual replacement to turning on my Xbox360 and going to Halo Waypoint to find the Daily (and Weekly) Challenges.
I don’t blame you for bringing this to a close; I know what it’s like to lose interest in something and to stop doing it when it’s time to stop.
Still, if you ever want to play a game with me, be it Reach or Mass Effect 3 or whatever, please let me know; I’ll always have a spot in the party reserved for you. (Hey, speaking of which, might you run a similar blog now for the things they do every weekend in ME3?)
    See you around!
    Sincerely, Craig

I’ve never posted before, but I’ve been reading your site for months. I want to say thanks for all of your hard work, and I’ll miss reading through the comments section.

  39. socialnorms says:

Thanks Matt. I only got started using your site a few months ago, but it’s been a lot of fun. May your next favorite game be just as awesome!

  40. JThomas says:

It’s sad to see this blog go since like most of all who posted in this thread, I check this religiously every day and enjoy the comments. Most importantly, I loved Matthew’s advice and updates to Custom Challenges and other random Halo information.

I can be a critical poster at times, but like I stated before, I give my thoughts in a logical and educated manner. Those who come on this site to bash people and start drama, very much unwanted and hopefully that wasn’t a direct impact on why Matthew has decided to end the blog.

As for you Matthew, hopefully all these comments are proof that people love coming to your site and are very sad to see it go. I know I hope to see you start another site for Halo4 because not only will you get your loyal visitors from this site, but also others that don’t want to rely on a slow, klunky 343 site.

I game almost every day on Halo Reach and am always down for intense, quality Arena matches, customs, or to just mess around and have fun…so if anyone wants to get a party going feel free to add me! I look forward to seeing your invites and possibly having some game nights very soon!

gulp … life without RDC? is that possible. it’s hard to fathom. what will i do now every morning when i log into my computer at work?
thank you for all your time and effort Matthew. your blog will be truly missed.

  43. Matthew,

Really appreciate all the time and hard work you’ve put into this; like many, I’ve followed the blog for a long time and what I’ve appreciated most about it is the efficiency it’s brought to my gaming.

While at work I could plan what challenges would be fun, which ones would be worth it, and which challenges were better left undone.

We’re all running short on time, and any chance to get some back while still having fun is a HUGE help – thank you!

  44. Gil says:

I miss the update info already esp. as that link to check out what the latest challenges are doesn’t work for me.

  45. TheOneInYellow says:

Thank you Matthew for creating this blog, and continuing to run it for so long.

Being one of the early, ex-regular members of the blog, I fondly remember the many bonds I created with different people I met on here. I gained a massive amount of help with challenges, but gained far greater friendships, which are still going strong.

This blog also got me to almost complete a goal I set out when I got Reach on release day; to complete every single weekly challenge.
Unfortunately, one weekly challenge in particular (get 200 Assists in a week… >_<) was uncompleted, and broke my then running streak (I got to, from memory, 186 or 189). However, I kept a new streak up until recently.
I changed my mind about my initial goal to complete every weekly challenge; so many new games were vying for my attention that I decided to continue (my then new streak after the lost challenge above) up until I got to Inheritor, which occurred a few weeks back.
I will now not complete any more weekly challenges, nor intentionally complete daily ones, but will continue to play Reach, at a more reduced pace, so that my many other games can get a little love. Any challenges completed now will be accidental.
To date, I have completed 80 weekly challenges, and 2102 daily challenges!

This blog has ample's of resources that helped me for many months, and helped me create a great foundation to push me to Inheritor/continue completing weekly challenges (amongst many daily ones). Yet, for me, it was the friends that were born from this blog that which I treasure the most.

I also enjoyed meeting you in person, though at the time at GameFest 2011 we had no idea who each other were (still makes me laugh), and I thank you for making me famous for a day by posting those two pics (one in particular) of the day we went, we both enjoyed playing Halo: CEA before release, and that was awesome!

As many older members, and many newer ones, have already written, we thank you deeply, and wish you the best success in whatever you do henceforth.

    Thank you. ❤

Matthew, I am very thankful for the time that you put into the posting each and every day. I really enjoyed receiving this in my inbox each day and reading it. Today I searched and nothing so I had to come and read- I figured you went on vacation or something? I am bummed to see that you have ended the Reach run but I suppose it was bound to happen some time? Halo 4 will be next in November so hopefully we will see you blog some then? Your daiy posts and commentary will definetly be missed greatly….. Look forwards to more from you in the future 🙂
Hope to see u online sometime XBL. 😉

Thank you so much for your dedication and helpfullness Matt. I only found your blog a couple of months ago, but loved reading your posts, ‘specially what else you were playing. Take care, and have fun till Halo 4 comes out! 😉

  54. Sir Galahad 63 says:

    Oh Matthew!
Today was the day I was thinking, “Hmm, I havn’t checked RDC for a while, seeing as I don;t play Reach much, I’ll just post my happy comment and bid you good day”, and I come to this!

Well I guess I should leave my deepest feelings for RDC, the community, and You (not in a wierd way though).

Matthew, you made playing Reach worthwhile, you made me want to check this site as soon as I woke, just before I went to sleep, and everything in between. I made so many friends that I would woke up at 4 in the morning to play with on Friday, something very rare in my life. As Reach started getting repetitive you made me still want to play it, and those little excerpts form your daily life and everything new kept me coming back.
I really hope you do enjoy doing what you do now, and wish for you to have happy days 🙂

    Have fun,

    Sir Galahad 63

    • JThomas says:

Ha, I don’t check nearly as much as you do but I’ve had this site in the back of mind as well to see if there are any new comments. I guess I’m just hoping that it would magically start back up again…

On the bright side, H4 is fast approaching and with that, hopefully a new Matthew sponsored site! I haven’t played HR in a long, long time and embarrasingly I’ve picked up Plants vs. Zombies. Highly addicitive for a kid’s game!

My only regret is I didn’t make a greater effort to party up with all the fine folks who frequented this site.
