10th January – Reach Daily Challenges Commentary

Some really easy challenges today for a huge amount of credits. To quote Kevin Keegan ‘I love it’

Blastin’ and Relaxin’ – Kill 180 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 2000 cR

Given the other challenges today, and the weekly challenge, you’ll get very close to this challenge, if not completed. If you want to top up, either Gruntpocalypse in Corvette for 120 easy kills, or keep replaying Winter Contingency Rally Point Bravo to get a random amount.

A Friend in Need – Earn 10 assists in Firefight Matchmaking – 2000 cR

Courtyard all the way, especially on the Elites and Brutes. If you do 40% or more damage and someone else kills the enemy in 4 seconds you get an assist. So when you start seeing Elites and Brutes start hammering them (particularly using an overcharged Plasma Pistol on Elites) when there are other people clustered around you.

Return of the Mack – Kill 50 Elites in Campaign today on Normal or harder – 3000 cR

ONI: Sword Base has been the best for this in the past. Just playing through there are 30-40 I think, and it’s definitely worth using the target designator at the beginning. Basically run from the start up the ramp to your right and take out the Elite at the top. Then hug the wall all the was to where the TD is, grab it, turn around and fire it back up to the top of the slope. Then take out the few guys around you and go back up the slope to mop up anyone who survived. You’ll get 4-5 Elites a time, but it takes about a minute and gives you loads of medals and kills, so well worth it. If you’re playing through, still stick to ONI Sword Base, especially from Rally Point Bravo inside the base itself.

Headshot Honcho – Kill 9 enemies with headshots in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 1700 cR

Team SWAT everytime for this. It’s in one game, but in SWAT you should easily get this number of headshots, if not double!

And there you go. I’ll be on at some point to pick up this large credit haul and the weekly.

So most people should be able to achieve the 11,200cR (daily+weekly) without too much effort. 180 kills – 15 or so in one SWAT game (headshot challenge), – 20 or so in one (hopefully) game of multi-team (assist challenge), – 50 elites in campaign (elite challenge) = 95 remaining enemies (kills challenge). Do a run through of ONI on normal and Nightfall on Legendary. You should have MOST of the required kills from doing ONI, in Nightfall do the first section with all the elites/grunts/jackals, skip helping the marines by keeping left and heading down the creek bed, and assasinate the lone elite and two grunts on the bridge before doing the forklift trick to get through the gate to bypass the hunters and all remaining enemies. Say an hour and a half at most? DONE!

The assist challenge is in Firefight, hence my recommendation of using Courtyard for it.

My bad Matt, sorry. Most of what I said should still be a good idea although you won’t have to worry about killing x number of enemies after playing a game of firefight. I think I’ll still do ONI on Normal and then Nightfall on Legendary as I played the heck out of ONI yesterday trying to get that challenge. The last three times we had that challenge I got it in one try (always play with the same buddy), but yesterday was one of those days the AI seemed to be doing unorthodox crazy things (coupled with some stupidity on my part). We also had one session where we both stole wraiths instead of using the target locator. We were almost to the base after taking out the ghosts/remnants and there was still the one elite left alive. We were having a hell of a time hitting him with the mortar so I went to splatter him and just before that my friend had shot a mortar and I ended up intercepting it. I think that was on our third playthrough and I almost put my controller through my tv, but it was actually pretty funny.

I used to do the Return of the Mack challenge by just killing the first Elite encountered in Nightfall repeatedly (takes like 2 minutes to complete). Looks like Bungie made it so this particular Elite no longer counts towards challenges (I killed him 30 times before realizing the counter wasn’t advancing). Going a little further into the level you can find another Elite on a tower that is standing still. He still works for the challenge. He’s a bit farther from the closest check point, so it took more like 10 minutes to complete the challenge using just him.

i wasn’t able to get any kills to register – it always showed as not being possible to complete the challenge at this time.

so i gave up, cant be bothered to do it 😛
