21st February – Reach Daily Challenges Commentary

Low credits again – I think we might want to get used to this as a feature, perhaps a sign the challenges are becoming more regulated and standardised after the experimentation we’ve seen since the start of the year…

Covenant-cide – Kill 120 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking – 1100 cR

Approximate kill volumes:

  • Score Attack – 100
  • Gruntpocalypse – 120
  • Fiesta Attack/2X Score Attack ~ 125
  • Firefight – Anything up to 350/400

So one game of any of these will almost get you there, I’d recommend factoring in the next challenge first then topping up if you don’t hit your 120.

A Friend in Need – Earn 10 assists in Firefight Matchmaking – 1000 cR

Courtyard all the way, especially on the Elites and Brutes. If you do 40% or more damage and someone else kills the enemy in 4 seconds you get an assist. So when you start seeing Elites and Brutes start hammering them (particularly using an overcharged Plasma Pistol on Elites) when there are other people clustered around you.

Short, Controlled Bursts – Kill 100 enemies with automatic weapons in the Campaign today – 1000 cR

Automatic weapons are those that fire repeatedly, namely the Assault Rifle, Plasma Repeater, Plasma Rifle, Needler and Spiker. In Campaign you want a mission with lots and lots of enemies quickly. As usual, Winter Contingency’s a good one as it’s not too hard, and the enemies come quickly. Stick to Normal difficulty so you don’t have to spend too long.

A Solid Outing – Earn at least 12 kills in a multiplayer Matchmaking game – 1300 cR

Best ways to get lots of kills in one game:

  • Multi Team Battle – Particularly the variants of Oddball or Crazy King as you can take out people going for the objective, but normal Slayer works well in this mode as well
  • Invasion – Depends on your skill level, but the games are long so it’s quite possible to get a lot of kills
  • Rumble Pit – Most variants help with this, bar Headhunter. Whilst the target is often only 25 you’ll find several players always getting close to the target in a game.
  • Grifball – If you get your timing right this is so easy in any Grifball game where someone grabs the bomb but doesn’t score. I’m hopeful this counts all 3 rounds as one game, so it’s even easier.
  • Team Slayer/SWAT – Again depends on your skill level, and that of your team, but it’s definitely possible to get 15 in a game without too much stress

So pretty easy, a nice mix which a lot of people have said they want lately – I quite like having specific days (Thurs-Firefight, Fri-Multiplayer) for challenges on a particular mode, but a mix is really good to mix it up and get me playing.

As always, if you want to get notifications when I post updates on the challenges you can use the useful links on the right to join the Facebook group, or follow me on Twitter, or subscribe via email.

This week’s poll is on your favourite armour ability, please vote and comment if you want to explain your choice and how you use it. Also add any comments on the challenges if you’ve got your own tricks for getting them.

    Hey!
    You’re definetly right about the low credits!!!!! For me they’re just things to do, if I’m bored of my usual gametypes! The Solid Outing challenge is quite easy (depending on skill level and map knowledge) on Big Team Battle – find yourself a nice spot with your DMR and a power weapon (if you’re lucky) and farm some kills – Spire and Haemorrage are my favourites!!
    Keep up the good work Matt!~
    Cheers

    I like the challenges because they force me to try different game types. That said, I wish they’d give love to some of the objective based games. How about some challenges for how long you stay in the hill on crazy king, skulls captured in headhunter, how many times you capure the flag in CTF, score with the ball in Griffball, etc.? There are more opportunities than just kills in multiplayer of firefight.

    For 100 automatic weapons kills, you can use the same checkpoint trick that most people should be using for farming the “Nice Arm” commendation. Load up The Package on rally point Alpha. Check out the video here. If it takes you more than 10 minutes, I’d be surprised.

      Another good way to get that challenge fast is to do Oni Sword Base on normal, kill everything in sight with automatic weapons until you get to the part with the target locator, then restart mission. It only took me i guess around 15 min. or so.

  4. Mike says:

    Hehe on the vote we have 129 scrubs!!!! Armor lock is stupid it shouldn’t be in the game! It gets abused and makes it stupid!!!! I have had so many people lock just before I kill them. It’s funny I just run behind them and wait. Then assassinate there ass when they come out!

    Anybody else had trouble getting challenge A Solid Outing?
    I’ve got more than 12 three times and it still hasn’t given it to me.
    Does it count multikills? I’ve been getting doubles downing choppers and tanks.
    Games have also been on CTF and similar.

    Hey, has anyone had any luck with the ONI LASO Weekly Challenge? I haven’t completed it yet but I’m getting results with:

    – Saving and quitting when dying. Do this as soon as your player dies. This has the same effect as reverting to the last save. You can even continue your game the next day;

    – Plasma pistols and precision weapons. A deadly combination in the right hands. You can use normal plasma shots rather than overcharged shots to save ammo and gain accuracy;

    – Ghosts. Use them to destroy other Ghosts. Weave in and out of their plasma projectiles whilst keeping your targeting reticle trained on them and firing constantly. If skilled enough, you can destroy Revenants this way. If you’re out of sheild and low on health, let your health replenish a little when you lose a small unit of the stuff;

    – The Warthog Gauss Cannon. Bring this weapon of destruction wherever you can go with it. Make sure no-one else tries to drive it into oblivion like Kat and the marines. Mount the cannon and shoot from as long range as possible, still maintaining sight of the enemy. Just before the section involving a unit of Hunters, try moving a piece of broken Revenant over to the barriers and drive your Warthog Gauss over it. Use the cannon to blast those Hunters easy.

    – Not having the Blind Skull on. It is not necessary to keep this skull on for some, unknown reason. Life will be much, much easier.

    – Saving Grunts for last. Smash their little “Grunty skulls” in to regenerate your shields at thr end of a battle.

    – Using the Target Locator on the Wraiths. Otherwise if you feel it fit to use for something else, neutralise the turret operator on the Wraith, hope that that it doesn’t blast you to pieces with its Plasma Mortar whilst running up to the Wraith, and use Armour Lock when it attempts to splatter you. Which brings me to finally;

    – The Wraith. By using Armour Lock, the Wraith will have been stunned temporarily by an EMP blast, allowing you to board. Your next decision is – destroy or commandeer. Smash it to pieces non-stop to completely destroy the Wraith and prevent future use by enemy AI, or if you’re lucky you might have smashed the Elite out of the seat before the near-invunerable tank was scrap. Take out all other enemies before attempting. Due to tilt, the tank will be impervious to damage from most infantry weapons. The only thing you should worry about are

      Hi Etienne, welcome to the site – I assume you’re new around here. If you look at the post before this you’ll see a full post discussing the weekly challenge. I do a commentary for every challenge Bungie posts. We’ve had lots of comments added today so far with lots of good hints, so I’ll be updating it tomorrow to add them into the post itself.

    Revenants, Dropships, Plasma Grenades, Plasma Launchers and Concussion Rifles. Don’t linger out in the open otherwise it’s finished.

    There! Hope this helps!

  8. stevelands says:

    Decided to do Pillar Of Autumn for the campaign, low and behold as fate would have it, I managed to get the “If they came to hear me beg” achievement! I’ve been trying for it for AGES!!!!

  9. Mr. Pottymouth says:

    Short Controlled Bursts Winter Contingency Rally Point Bravo is the way to go with this one, plenty of low resistance enemies. This courtyard battle works great because you can always reload last checkpoint. It’ll probably take 5 runs to get the full 120.

    If you want more of a challenge I’d recommend going with Mikes suggestion of loading The Package Rally Point Alpha. You’ll face tougher shielded Elites there & really feel like you’ve earned it.

  10. Mr. Pottymouth says:

    Getting Assists is probably one of the toughest things, partially damaging an enemy with no way to really gauge how much is done and THEN hoping someone nearby will finish the job within the allotted 4 seconds. 1000 cR???

    If you could change the Assist system or Assist challenges for the better what would you do?
