14th April – Reach Daily Challenges Commentary

Firefight Thursday is here again, and you can get through all these within 3 games…

Shootin’ and Lootin’ – Kill 400 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 2000 cR

You’ve got a few choices for doing this really easily and quickly…

  • Forge – make a game with players spawning in one spot and camp it
  • Firefight – Download my Firefight Invincible game type on my File Share, lots of Elites, lots of medals, lots of kills
  • ONI: Sword Base – Use the Target Designator trick (run past everyone at the beginning, grab it, turn around, fire, wait for the killing to stop and restart the checkpoint)
  • Package – There are points where you can get a checkpoint just before a number of Grunts appear in the final battle, so you can gun them down and restart

Hyper Lethal Vector – Kill 150 enemies with headshots in Firefight Matchmaking 1125 cR

Gruntpocalypse and 2x Score Attack are great ways of doing this, you should be looking to get a lot of headshots in a game, especially if it’s on a simple map where you can line up the Grunts, like Corvette or Courtyard. Again though do it in Glacier to get the below challenge first. If you get to a high number rather than doing a whole game again jump in Crashsite or Generator Defense and only defend until you have your total then give up the goal.

A Simple Spree – Earn any spree in Firefight Matchmaking – 1000 cR

Sprees cover a lot of options, 5 kills with Shotguns, Sniper Rifle, Plasma Grenade sticks, Swords… and so on. Frankly, 10 kills with anything gets you a spree, so just do that and you’ve got a very easy 1000 credits.

On the Sixth Respawn… – Complete a Firefight Matchmaking game with fewer than 5 deaths – 2000 cR

I reckon it’s easiest to go for this in Gruntpoc and just be careful. Complete might mean kill all dudes, or just survive to the end, not sure. If Gruntpocalypse isn’t your thing then choose your favourite game type, just play it slowly and carefully. Drop Shield’s a good idea too if you can, as long as you’re prepared to run away and heal if needed. 5 deaths isn’t difficult, most of you should be aiming to do it in one or less!

So jump through your best modes to clear the 2nd, 3rd and 4th challenges then mop up any more kills you need in a quick mode as listed for the 1st. Like the meerkat says, Simples!

Any other tips, add them into the comments.

Cool. A Gruntpoc and a 2x Score Attack (just for the variety) should do me – not sure I’ll have the time to get to 400 kills today. Still, I can but try 😉 Decent credit return today, should be enough to push me over into General! Woo 🙂

Do headshot kills with the pistol count as headshots towards the challenge / headshot commendation, btw?

Also Matthew, now that this blog is getting a lot of regular hits and comments, how about bringing back the weekly polls? Or doing a ‘talking point’ topic that gets repeatedly linked to over the course of a week? There’s a lot of various Halo-related things to talk about… Favourite game in the series; what you consider acceptable and unacceptable in terms of cheating / glitching; favourite and least favourite MM / FF maps, etc…

    • Sean says:

Pistol headshots do count – at least they always have.

    • wnwoody says:

Yes, headshots with a pistol counts as well.

    • SwiftEagleEye says:

When time is limited and you have to get x amount of kills in any game mode, set up a custom firefight with invinceable and every wave be regular grunts an make the bonus round 2 minutes long (max). Crank up you movement speed and damage. With the primary weapon as a fuel rod cannon or rocket launcher and blast away, for 400 you can get it in about 10 minutes on corvette.

      • SwiftEagleEye says:

I recommend grunts bc you’ll get more to come out on each wave and bonus round than elites.

I’ve been browsing this site for the last couple days, just thought I’d comment and say that I think you’re doin a pretty good job with it. Keep it up!

My tag is Amduscias, if anyone cares.

  3. wnwoody says:

Wow! Can these challenges get any easier? Guess I will be Grunt hunting today.

  4. Edward (Marshy 40) says:

Matthew, just completed all the daily, and for the 6th spawn I can confirm that you just have to finish the game, not kill all the dudes. I started in a game of regular score attack and the game ended during the Skirmi-wave. As soon as the voice-over said “game over”, the challenge complete message popped.

As other have mentioned, nice job on the blog, for your sidekicks too!

Yeah been following this for about a week now reading it every morning from my iPod Touch, and I got to say very god tips. Yesterday with that nightfall challenge I had no idea you could beat that level in five mins–thnx for telling me to look it up. Also I didn’t know that save and quitting the campaign restarted the death count came in handy when the covenant decided to attack a pacifist–big jerks. Finally made it past the second sprint past the grunt and jackal then it was smoothe sailing till they all focused on me in my forklift while Jun watched…

Anyways big help, today not so much though I play FF a lot and did the same things you suggested already–so I can confirm it’s good advice. Imma play 2 Gruntpocs then finish banshee spawn killing the corvette in LNoS to build up war machine and flat tire–I think–to get the other 160 kills then spend another 5 mins or so to hopefully go gold.

Anyways really like the advice, thanks for taking time to write it up. Very good and even challange vets like me who completed that 24 challenges in a week without any help can still learn a thing or two. Imma start recommending to people.

I just wanted to say this is a great site you have going here. I found it sometime last year and used it mainly for weekly challenge hints since those tend to be grinds.

Now I use the site almost daily to get a pool of new ideas on how to do daily challenges. Better to mix it up then just do the same thing over and over to meet a challenge. The hints for the LASO challenges that started coming out every 2-3 weeks are very helpful as well.

  7. KDA Talkie says:

I have to agree with all of the comments today…I found this site about 5 months ago and I check it daily…Great tips to mix things up a little and keep things interesting…KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!! and Thanks.

Whats ur gamertag guy who posts all the stuff

  9. YoSoY says:

Matthew, just wanted to thank you for your enthusiasm and passion for Halo. It’s been a while since the first time I visited your website. Since then, I’ve came back almost daily and I always find interesting tips. Great job, man! Cheers from Mexico and kudos to whererever you are. (Sorry for my english, it’s not my native language)

  10. michael says:

These are some very easy challenges today. I hate to say it but i never did get the 40,000 points challenge yesterday. The highest i made it was close to 35,000 in a game. Does anyone have an idea what the next weekly will be? I know it should be a LASO and i think someone said a while back it might be Exodus. Whatever it is im ready for it!

    • Edward (Marshy 40) says:

Yeah, I never get it either. I did not try that hard, to be honest — only a three or four games. The people I played with did not get it either, expect in one case, where the guy got just over 40,000 points.

Next week’s weekly should be Exodus LASO, although I’m hoping for a Firefight weekly. It’s been a while since we had one and if they did got for a LASO that would mean three Campaign weeklies in a row.

      • michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

A Firefight weekly challenge would be great. I do alot of Score Attack because it gives me a good amount of credits per game, plus its fun. The only thing i dont play alot of anymore is the Multiplayer Matchmaking. It seems like every time i get into a game someone on my team wants to betray. My son loves playing infection but they took out the kick betrayer system on it. Like every other game someone runs around killing their own teammates because they know they wont get booted.

    • Shane says:

I was lucky enough to get into a 3 person FRG match on Corvette where one person quit/disconnected after the first round. Once I got 40,000 I stopped killing the covenant and just flew around so that the other guy just broke 40,000 during the bonus round. For some reason this seemed to make him angry [shrugs].

    • Niisama Broham says:

Same here. First attempt I scored 38,xxx points. Rocketfight on Outpost with 2 other players after 1 dropped (lol probably did so on purpose).

Needless to say, didn’t really care much after that. Made two more attempts then found something else to do. The credits earned for the 40k point FF slug-fest didn’t seem worth the headache and I didn’t want to cheat or anything.

I’m thinking next “week”ly is going to be Exodus LASO. Those brutes and wraiths at the end are going to be a pain… not to mention the flight in the falcon there. I always hate being “stuck on rails” with the black eye skull active… having to memorize enemy locations and praying you can kill them before you enter their firing range!

  11. EyeOhYou (Andrew) says:

As always, the firefight Thursday challenges are a walk in the park. I personally knocked them out in just a few games of score attack.

No complaints though, that means when I get home from work later I’ll be able to join up with some of my friends for a few good games of MM. Add my tag if you’re looking for someone to play with( listed above). I’m always down to party 🙂

    • i’m still having issues bridging everything so no XBL for me. 😦

      • EyeOhYou (Andrew) says:

        BOOOOOOOO!

      • i know, right?! i finally get all hooked up….but the NAT is not open and i cannot hear anyone. :S

so i said screw it and i ordered a 100′ ethernet cable to run across my parents’ house. i bet they’ll be thrilled….

        it’ll be here saturday! 😀

      • EyeOhYou (Andrew)(mobile) says:

Sick! Get ready to hit it hard Saturday! (And yes, that’s what she said)

  12. Austin Kurtz says:

Here’s what I do for quick completions of the kill challenges in “any game mode” when I’m short on time. I made some modifications to Matthew’s excellent “Firefight Invincible” variant…

    * 100% grunts
    * Removed the Mythic and Tilt skulls -- no need to make enemies harder to kill since we're not going for points anyway
    * Removed the Cloud skull and set radar to 75m -- so you can see where all grunts are at all times (on Corvette, at least)
    * Reduced enemy health to 10%
    * Turned off enemy grenades -- so the grunts can't kill each other as easily
    * One loadout with jetpack, needler, and rocket launcher -- needler is best here because...
        * It's fully automatic and has an insanely fast firing rate (with the bottomless clip) -- so your trigger finger won't get tired (you could tape the button down if you wanted)
        * The needles track the grunts -- closest thing to an aimbot that you're allowed to use without being banned
        * With these settings, it only takes one needle to kill anywhere on an unshielded enemy, so you can pick up easy multikills by spraying fire indiscriminately

Settings are on my fileshare as FF Grunt Grind if you’re interested. As always, play on Corvette, and you might as well do Legendary since it doesn’t affect how fast you can kill the grunts. I found that hovering just above the center and spraying needles at each door and group of grunts was very fast. I was able to get 488 kills in 12 minutes.

    • Shane says:

Cheers! I made one similar change this morning, (setting Elite Generals to grunts from Matthew’s variant) but this looks way better. Another tip if you’re short on time and don’t need the full 400 kills is to reduce the time limit (but don’t save the variant). I had already done two score attacks for the other challenges so 5 minutes was more than enough time to bag the remaining +100 grunts.

All four challenges done in 30 minutes before work today thanks to this blog! Maybe I’ll start gardening in the evenings…

  13. Cpn Beef says:

Just a heads up, a really easy way to get ” on the sixth respawn ” is gruntpoc on beachhead, sit on the roof landing headshots, they funnel up the main aisle and stairs. A couple might get up to you but dropshield makes it almost impossible to die

  14. Erik Shititicoch says:

I got you grunts right where I wantchu.

  15. crazygamer329 says:

Love the blog. I have been coming for months now and its very helpful. Read it every morning at 630 on my droid.

    • michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

Lol… Thats exactally what time i get up and read this! I have to get up at 6:00am to get the kids ready for school and i always open up the laptop and go straight to this page. Honestly i look at this about 50 times a day. And as everyone has said, thanks Matthew for the blog and thanks Snickerdoodle and V4Volcanicity for taking this over when Matthew is tied up. 🙂

  16. Oh and these are some easy challenges.

  17. austin says:

This is a fist time post and i wanted to say i have read you every day for 6 months on my phone! I love you guys this site rocks

  18. wbs Skatanic says:

What time do the challenges change for you guys over in the US? They change at 11am for me, so there’s a long wait in the morning before I can get going on them! lol
