14th December – Halo Reach Daily Challenges & Commentary

Christmas song of the day is Suggs’ version of ‘Sleigh Ride’. I’ve still never heard a definitive version of this song, it’s a fabulous song but no one has ever done one that surpasses all others (in case you’re not sure who Suggs is, he was the lead singer of Madness). This is the first version I owned, in fact I actually own the EP featured in the video. The latest She & Him cover of it is pretty good, but again, just not quite great.

The challenges today are:

  1. Gunslinger – Kill 150 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking – 5500 cR
  2. Heroic Holdout – Kill 125 enemies on Holdout on Heroic in Firefight Matchmaking – 3300 cR
  3. Deathless Package – Complete The Package on Legendary without dying – 4400 cR
  4. Home Field Advantage – Win 7 games in multiplayer Matchmaking – 2050 cR

Commentary follows after the break…

Gunslinger – Kill 150 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking – 5500 cR

Grifball as ever for high kill volumes. You can get 30, 40, 50 and more kills in a good game when you have your timing and eye in with the hammer. If you’re going for the last challenge then perhaps work in something like Team SWAT until you have that then finish this off in your favourite game type.

Heroic Holdout – Kill 125 enemies on Holdout on Heroic in Firefight Matchmaking – 3300 cR

Hopefully you’ll see a 2x Score Attack game come up on Holdout, if you can make it through that you’ll have this done. However you can never be certain of getting the level you want when it’s map specific, so I say take whatever if first offered to you and accept you’ll have to run through Holdout twice with it. If you can get into FF Doubles or Arcade you’ve got a good chance of getting it in one, again hoping the map actually comes up for you.

Deathless Package – Complete The Package on Legendary without dying – 4400 cR

This shouldn’t be too bad for us, especially if you’ve done the LASO on The Package previously. I’m not going to post it all here, but your best thing to do is to follow Tyrant’s guide to playing it in Mythic. If you die you can quickly hit pause then save and quit, then from the menu go back into the game at the last checkpoint. Previously we have been able to play through as you would with dying included, then at the very last checkpoint quit the game, go back in and finish it and you’re good.

Home Field Advantage – Win 7 games in multiplayer Matchmaking – 2050 cR

Stick to Team Slayer/SWAT/Snipers/Objective/Grifball/Action Sack for this. In those there are only two teams so your chances of winning are greatly improved. If you find a group of guys you play well with then stick with them.

I almost had a legit LD Package today. On the next-to-last wave at Halsey’s lab, a lucky Jackal got my Banshee with a plasma bolt and left me open to fire from all the ground forces. Notably, I hijacked 5 Banshees with the Grenade Launcher and Jet Pack and didn’t use the Wraiths or any other heavy weapons (save the GL) against ground forces. I also picked up the tank intact achievement, even though this wasn’t my first time playing through on Legendary and getting to Sword Base without blowing up. All in all, I don’t feel too bad about using the restart from checkpoint trick to grab the credits.

Notes: The Focus Rifle that you pick up in the ramp section with the Jackals and Skirmishers works well against the cloaked Spec Ops Elites and the General in the following section; doesn’t do much against the Engineer though.

Without the Tilt Skull on, the Grunts you fight when you land are a joke. The FRG works well for the immediate next section to knock down the first floating platform, third Shade, and the lone Ghost.

The Scorpion is a Banshee-swatting MACHINE. The delay you need to use at range on The Package is identical (or so it felt) to the long-distance Banshee kills on The Covenant in Halo 3. See if you can get more than 8 Banshee kills without slowing down.

Carter spawns with an Assault Rifle despite the fact that he usually carries a far more useful DMR. WTF? If this game had the ability to assign Noble Team members found weapons – even if they were limited by “class” so that Emile could only use Concussion Rifle/Sword/Hammer and Kat only PP/PRep/PRif/Spiker, etc. – would make parts of it a lot less frustrating.

  2. Roan-the-Man says:

You’re pretty much screwed with the ‘Win X amount’ type challenge if you havent got a good team in consecutive matches. Top that of with the amount of people quitting games today and it’s nearly mind-numbing.

This is of course assuming you haven’t got a good group of friends who’re solid players in battle.

  3. Roan-the-Man says:

Oh, BTW that means I’m actually saying ‘Screw you’ Home Field Advantage!

    • Dragao1010 AKA: Brian says:

If there ends up being a weekly for 50 wins again, it will take much longer than before considering grifball now doesnt stop even when your team scores 3 -_-

  4. Roan-the-Man says:

^ True, but that’s why there’s SWAT concerning # of wins.

Grifball is a rare case when involved win game wins due to it’s unpredictable nature + frustration for some.

    • Eskobar says:

I prefer SWAT to Grifball though both is unpredictable with random players, I barely managed 12 wins / 3 hours playing non-stop, also completed 450 medals & 300 kills / 3 hours. A shame that 343 limited down on custom challenges.

  5. Steve Bergen says:

I got 4 wins straight in Grifball with something like 75 kills. That was excellent. One one out of three in Grifball, then switched to Swat. All challenges done except The Package, not sure if I will do that one yet.
