20th April – Reach Daily Challenges Commentary

Another mix before we hit Firefight Thursday and Multiplayer Friday, so last chance to mix it up on the challenges…

Light Fare – Kill 100 enemies in any game mode in Reach – 1000 cR

If you want to do this specifically (as you’ll probably getting it just playing for the next challenges) then jump into something on Score Attack, maybe Gruntpocalypse, 2X Score Attack or Fiesta Attack to get it done quickly and rack up the kills.

Flat Tire – Kill 5 enemy vehicle in Firefight Matchmaking – 1000 cR

Holdout is a good option for this because you’re guaranteed a Banshee each game, and if you take it out quick (Sniper Rifle in the crow’s nest) then you can get several. Another trick is to keep the last Grunt or two in a wave alive to extend the game as much as possible. Beachhead and Outpost do have some vehicles dropped, 2X Score Attack has been reported to do well here, although sometimes there are none sometimes there are 4 or 5.

Leadership Element – Kill 45 enemy leaders in the Campaign today – 1100 cR

We’ve had this challenge a few times since I started the blog. Have a read of these three posts for my previous thoughts on this, I still say playing through The Package and The Pillar of Autumn, particularly from later Rally Points for each will see you well. The ONI: Sword Base credit farming trick with the Target Designator can work well if you can trap one or two Leaders in the beam each time. Also might be worth doing the Weekly Challenge first then mopping up any more Leaders you need for this having completed that challenge.

The Love of the Game – Complete 17 games in multiplayer Matchmaking – 1850 cR

It might take a bit of time but there’s no limitation on winning or weapons etc. Fastest games are often Infection as they go really quickly I find. Equally, it’s a good chance to try out different variants you might not have played, so jump in BTB, Rumble Pit and Arena to see what they’re like. And of course you can win 3 rounds of Grifball in 30 seconds if you’re just going for the bomb and the score, but as ever it’s much more fun to hit people over the head with a hammer surely? :D

I’m looking forward to hearing a report back from last night’s BTB matches in the comments. Rest assured I am thinking (in amongst the million other things going on at the moment) about the best way to implement a gamertag list for all you fabulous people.

And as ever add your own thoughts into the comments.

  1. Sergeant Jinto says:

Halo Ball in the Action Sack playlist is great for quick games. My last one was over in two minutes.

  2. Clone 066 says:

It wAmas cool enjoyed playing with everybody last night. The banshees got to be annoying so we didn’t stick to BTB for to long. We ended up going to noble map pack.

    • Matthew Vose says:

Sorry I missed it now – I bought the Noble map pack last week but not had a chance to play it.

I’m thinking next Monday will be the best chance for me, I’ve got a big rugby match and a wedding over the Easter weekend so Monday might end up being a quiet/restful/hungover day XD

    • DCSimian81 says:

Was fun…I realize I’m terrible with a tank now :p And my god, some of you have some crazy ranks 🙂 Is Noble Map Pack worth it? I hear it’s on sale.

      • Clone 066 says:

Noble? Yes, some great maps. Tempest is the best becuz you can go fishing.

      • EyeOhYou (Andrew) says:

Noble was pretty good. I loved all game types on Anchor 9 and really enjoyed Invasion on Breakpoint. However, I think the defiant MP maps are even more enjoyable.

  3. Scruff UK says:

Well I’ll probably go for the 100 kills, but the other 3 challenges can go to hell. There’s no way I’m disrupting my Campaign save just to kill leaders, and the Flat Tire challenge just gives me a headache since most of the time your vehicle kills don’t count. And 17 games? SEVENTEEN? Argh.

So how did the BTB go last night? Gutted I couldn’t make it… people should add me anyway if you haven’t already (GT is the same as my name on here) but keep in mind for time zone purposes that I’m in the UK! The times / amount I play can be a little random, and I’ll barely be online at all for the next couple of evenings, but my Easter break starts on Friday so I’ll definitely be down for a bunch of games over the next week or so 🙂

    • Matt says:

What/where is this magical campaign save you keep mentioning? 🙂

On another note, Flat Tire and the associated commendation were much easier to do before Firefight was split into Limited and Arcade modes; now I see the occasional Banshee on Holdout but that’s it. I miss fighting Wraiths on Beachhead in game modes that didn’t require either a hijack or grabbing a weapon from a drop pod.

      • Scruff UK says:

Regarding my magical Campaign save; I’ve just taken out one of the Corvette’s engines and fired – but not landed – a salvo of rockets at the Corvette’s hangar-full of Banshees. Cue 5 kills every time I restart the checkpoint, which is giving me around 150 kills per minute, towards both of the vehicle-based Campaign commendations 😉

      • Matt says:

Hmm…so you fired the second set of rockets before the first wave hit the engine?

      • Scruff UK says:

Yes, yes I did. It’s all about careful placement. That, and repeatedly killing myself to get back to an earlier checkpoint after messing up the “careful placement” I just mentioned. Worth doing though, if you’re into boosting Campaign commendations 🙂

  4. Eric (GunsOfSummer33) says:

Didn’t Flat Tire used to be 10 vehicles? If so, it seems as though they finally came to their senses about how pointlessly difficult this challenge is now that they’ve changed Firefight around (used to be able to get several Wraiths on Beachhead, etc.). 5 certainly seems more doable than 10!

  5. Tom says:

Very happy they dropped Flat Tire to 5. Still, not sure I’ll be able to do all these, I’m not going to have much time today/tommorow to play and these are all a bit of a grind.

    • Edward (GT: Marshy 40) says:

So true! It still a bit of a grind, mainly waiting for the right map and gsme type to come up, but three games got me this. Now if Bungie pays nice with the pink mist challenge and keeps that to ungrindly amounts I think we’ll all be happy campers.

  6. michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

For the Leadership Element challenge if you wanted to get it done fast i would recomend loading up Nightfall at mission start on Normal with the Thunderstorm Skull on. Get a checkpoint right before you have to take out the first elite. Take him out and restart checkpoint. It shouldnt take more than 5-7 min. to get the 45 kills. Unearthed has had a Wraith and sometimes a Ghost dropped at the end, but like Matthew stated Holdout is probably your best option. Good luck everyone!

    • Mister Shhhhhhh says:

Thanx doc! 5 min 12 sec! Git er done!

    • t-rOY says:

I was able to do L.E. without loading up the skull, but I’ll keep that tip in mind if it doesn’t work in the future. For Flat Tire I’m gonna load up Unearthed in Firefight Limited with a couple of friends. I noticed 4 or 5 vehicle drops every time we played it before. The game usually drops a Wraith or Ghost in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th wave in a round, and they’re easy kills in Rocket Fight (favorite choice in Unearthed). Goodluck to everybody.

  7. Clone 066 says:

The credits for the leaders Judy army worth it. I may try and go for the banshees once or twice but most of my resources will have to go to MM. As it doesn’t matter what’s picked I’m working tirades it. The banshees can only be done on holdout though since I don’t have defiant, and 3 people can ruin my plans.

    • Clone 066 says:

Judy army? Really? How does that make. Sense Mr. Jobs? I type in just ain’t and you go with Judy army? Why?

  8. ZaganZee says:

I’m always up to do some challenges. Especially on the weekends. My gamertag is my name. Firefight Limited, especially on Beachhead is good for vehicles, I get at least one a round but sometimes many more. Lone Wolves is a good campaign mission, it’s half elites and it doesn’t take too long.

  9. Michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

I was just playing Oni Sword Base on Normal for the Leadership Element challenge and noticed that you dont even have to have the Thunderstorm Skull on. Just kill regular elites and they count.

    • Matt says:

Yes, that’s an odd disconnect between canon Covenant hierarchy and the way Reach counts things. Apparently all Grunts are infantry, all Jackals/Skirmishers are specialists, all Elites are leaders, etc.; not too sure about Brutes, Hunters, Engineers, or Drones.

      • EyeOhYou (Andrew) says:

I’m fairly certain that Engineers and Drones fall under the specialist category, but I could be wrong.

As for hunters and Brutes, I’m not exactly sure. I know the Brute Ultras count as leadership class enemies, which leads me to believe that all the other classes of brutes follow suit.

    • Braythor says:

I like ONI for the leadership one. Another thing I’m sure I noticed the last time this was on is that the banshees at the end count too, though I’ll double check this in a bit. If it’s right then a quick run from point bravo and a couple quit and resumes should make it easy enough.

  10. EyeOhYou (Andrew) says:

The BTB get together last night was actually quite fun.

We didn’t have a whole lot of people show up at first, but then as we played a couple games more and more people started to flow in. We played a lot of Noble map pack and a couple games of BTB. It was great to play with a lot of people from this blog 🙂

As for the challenges, nothing too bad today. As Michael said in the post before this one – Any elite counts as a leadership class enemy, whether they’re minors or field marshals. That being said, I think ONI: Sword Base might be an ideal mission to get that challenge complete.

    As always, goodluck everyone!

  11. Tim Everitt says:

Flat Tire – 2X Score Attack on Holdout doesn’t yield a vehicle kill. You end up taking out the Enemy first and the vehicle is no longer occupied. You’ll get credit for killing a “Covenant Pilot”, but not the banshee, as seen in the carnage report.

2X Score Attack on Beachhead usually yields a Wraith. From my experience, the Wraith will not drop if you’ve hopped in the Ghost and driven it around. It usually comes from the far right drop ship, as you’re looking out at the beach.

I’d like to know if there’s more vehicle detail based on the Score Attack map and playlist variants that are getting results, it just doesn’t seem like there are many opportunities. Unless you have a team, it’s almost pointless to try for them in the Arcade, with everyone of those kiddies going apeshit about it.

    • Michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

In 2X Score Attack on Holdout, if you get say a Spartan Laser from the Weapon Drop you can take out the Banshee and it will count for a Vehicle kill. You can also use the Sniper Rifle from the Weapon Drop.

      • Tim Everitt says:

I will try that out. 10 DMR bullets and it blows up. I don’t usually go for the Ordinance, but assumed that the DMR over Rocket Launcher would yield the kill.

      • Michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

Sorry. Disregard what i said about the Sniper Rifle for the Banshee kill. I just did it and it didnt give me a vehicle kill. If for some reason you cant find a Spartan Laser, pick up a Plasma Grenade Launcher and use it. It works for sure. I thought this was cool. I use the Grenade Launcher loadout a lot in 2X Score Attack and i shot one up in the sky and was able to hit a Banshee with it somehow.LOL. Another option is using a Plasma Pistol overcharge to bring a Banshee down in front of you and shooting the Grenade Launcher at it, that also counts. 😉

    • Michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

I was able to get 4 Banshee kills in 1 game of 2X Score Attack on Holdout by picking up the Spartan Laser from the Weapon Drop. I would suggest doing the same if you are pressed for time.

    • Shane says:

A trick for Beachhead is to goad the elites at the end into hijacking your ghost and then blowing them up in it. That counts as a vehicle kill but they don’t always go for it. Gold elites seem to do it more often.

Sniper Attack on Holdout all the way for me. A sniper shot in this game type is a guaranteed vehicle kill and you can take out a grunt on the turret in front of the base for an additional kill.

You’re right about the lack of opportunities. I used to love the old Firefight where you could get 10-15 vehicles on Glacier or Beachhead. Sniper Attack gets you a higher rate of vehicles but it’s not nearly as much fun.

      • Tim Everitt says:

I’ll try the Beachhead trick out.

For Holdout, 2X Score Attack didn’t drop the laser this last time. Next one I chose was Rocket Attack. I killed about 19 Grunts, then went running around the map avoiding them. A total of 4 Banshee came out, the first one I took down, the next 2 did a flip and crashed without a hit, and took out the 4th.

  12. bdm0610 says:

Completed the Leadership Element challenge in 8 minutes this morning using the Nightfall tip. 8 minutes is surely worth 1100 CR.

  13. Michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

Im going to have to play alot of Reach today so i can buy Inclement Weather. Geeezzz… Me and my son have been saving up for this for almost a month now and we’re at 1,943,360. Not too much left to go!

    • kurt says:

You are almost there! I only have 600,000 cR. I still have a long way to go if I want to see my spartan weathered inclemently. 😛

I’d like to play with you guys on the BTB or help on getting a challenge. My GT is ssaladfingerss .

    • okininja08 says:

Only a month??? You must be really good and playing a lot to get that many credits in a month. That’s about 65,000 cR a day for a month.

  14. Oreo says:

Don’t forget that you can also advance some commendations doing these. I probably made 10k cR last night finishing yesterday’s challenges when you add in the commendations I got in just a couple hours time. One game of Grifball got me the 21 kills and a close quarters commendation, so I earned over 3k on that match alone. I also got 3k in the slot machine a couple nights ago, so even the low cR challenges could end up paying out.

  15. Beachhead also offers many vehicles for easy completion of the Flat tire challenge. Thats the one I usually play.

    • Tim Everitt says:

Which variant gets you the most vehicles?

      • Michael (DR HIGGLESTEIN) says:

Holdout is the best bet for vehicle kills but like i said earlier Unearthed sometimes has a Wraith and Ghost. Outpost sometimes at the end has a Ghost or 2 if your lucky also.

  16. Agoldsniper says:

I ❤ hitting people with giant hammers in Grifball. I have some ideas to make Halo Reach a bit better. 1st I have some medal Ideas. Ok so in Team Slayer, Rumble Pit, and Rocket Race there should be a Rocket medal. 5 kills w/rocket without dying would be called A Rocket Spree. 10 would be Rocketier and 15 would be yes Rocket Scientist (lol pun) and then in territories & king of the hill if you kill somebody in the territory that you occupie you should get a medal called Make My Day. For those who don't know the "Make My Day Law" is when you kill somebody who breaks into your house. (Correct me if I am wrong but I am 99% sure I am right). And I think that in any game type when u go Active Camo every other time you use it you should have the Blind Skull activated. You would get more points when you get a kill when in blind AC(Active Camo) those are just some ideas. Tell me what you guys think. Thanks lol HALO REACH FTW!!!!!

  17. mac round fartz says:

for the leadership element challenge, in winter contingency, right after emiel says to jorge “cheer up big man, this field just became a free fire zone” and when the 3-4 grunts near the hay sacks when u pass the river there are around 6 eletes (ultra) and one elete infantry (normal) or one elete officer (heroic and up), when you take out those guys with noble assisting with you. reset and you should be back to the river area.

this might take a while but it is a one of the only places where there are a group of leaders in one place.

    • mac round fartz says:

Note: the first rally point is right after you kill all the eletes so you have to start at the beggining of the mission to get the elets, just an FYI

  18. Mr Postman 117 says:

Where do I find tyrants walkthrough’s? I tried this the other night by myself and couldnt even get past the suicide grunts at the beginning of the stage. Embarrassed and mad is all I got from this challenge

  19. Erik Shititicoch says:

    Yee-haw!

  20. Elite Eliwood says:

on ipod so i leave it short
    leadership element:
    – go on the package rally bravo on normal
    – get a jetpack stand on the roof to hijack a banchee
-kill all enemies and banchees, leave wraiths alive.
    – when halsy is done you get checkpoint and should have 3 wraiths alive.
    – kill the 3 wraiths and when the last one is dead you suicide.
    – keep killing the wraiths (3 wraiths = 6 leaders)
    have fun 🙂

  21. JCOD AshCeltic (GT) says:

It’s having a joke saying 17 games how much time does it think we all have?

    • Edward (GT: Marshy 40) says:

Yeah, it’s a bit of a hike. I guess you good play LIving Dead all the way, but that get’s boring. I opted for a mix of Action Sack and Team Swat. Took me 2.5 hours in all.

    • Shane says:

Couldn’t agree more. Not a challenge, just a timesink.

  22. Subject 6x says:

I did the leadership element one on nightfall at the first checkpoint with thunderstorm on, just reset 45 times took about 4 minutes, I did flat tire and light fare in one game of sniper attack on hold out, going up in about an hour to do the 17 games, I play whatever so if y’all want hit me up gamertag is Subject 6x

  23. fearlessNOODLE says:

Seems fitting that the multiplayer challenge today would take a lot of time sitting on your butt playing Halo no matter how good you do, seeing as how its 420 day. LOL

  24. Matthew Edwards says:

Here’s something I’ve wanted opinions on for a long time. Why on God’s green earth can’t I crouch when I’m getting shot at? That’s the most annoying problem with Reach, when you get hit, you automatically unchrouch, and can’t crouch for a split second. Surely I’m not alone here, this doesn’t make sense. How can we tell Bungie to fix this? Haha.

Also I noticed someone saying they were saving for Inclement Weather. I’ve been playing a long time and doing challenges, but I’ve only got like 600k or so. Do people just spend way too much time playi g Reach? Or is there some way to get credits that I don’t know about? Hahaha.

  25. ehhh. the 17 games didn’t end up being too bad, actually. my friends and i all jumped into infection and instead of holding out as long as possible, we all just got infected and got them over with quickly.
